People might be interested to know that STFC (UK astronomy funding agency) has publicly announced funding for UK involvement in instrumentation for the future 39-meter European "extremely large telescope" (E-ELT). This funding means that one of the two first instruments on the telescope will be UK led;

The E-ELT project itself will hopefully be formally approved in December this year, and start construction straight after that.
