Many thanks for the warm welcome.

I had a quick look at EQ mounts for AP, and an alternative to the Nexstar 8se namely the Celestron Advanced C8 SGT XLT Telescope. A very noisy mount to be sure!

The mount I would like is the HEQ5 pro synscan, but costing around £750 + plus a 8in SCT for around £850, would be difficult to justify purchasing rather then a long weekend all expenses paid trip to Rome for my better half.

Yes, she is reading this as I type...

I have a sneaking suspicion that "amateur" astronomy is an expensive business and the sneaky must buy optical purchase is rife!

I think I'll buy the nexstar scope in the next few weeks, just to make absolutely sure its the scope for me :).

PS If anyone knows if the next version of the Nexstar is being developed....

Hi, hope you enjoy SGL.

I have a hunch that the Alt-Az mounts of the those NEXSTAR scopes can be instantly changed to Equatorial mounts by some kind of lever which acts like a wedge? Somebody correct me if I am thinking about another scope, however I remember thinking it looked a little flimsy when I saw it, so it is probably not the best for astrophotography. Still a very nice scope though.

It is the smaller scopes in the Nexstar range that have this feature, the 8 does not have the built in Eq wedge adapter...
