Walking on the Moon

A Solar Prominence from SOHO

And this from a relatively "quiet" Sun.  Amazing.

Take a look at the lower right portion of the Sun, too.  There's a string of prominence that looks rather like high, cirrus clouds here on Earth.  Except they stretch for probably 80,000 to 90,000 Km!

BTW Steve: You need to go to the archives portion of APOD to link to the individual image of the day-otherwise you get the current day's image. FYI.

Ooops! I wonder how many times I have done that!!

Thanks for pointing it out Astroman,

Steve :clouds1:

Yet another pic of a 'common' solar prominence:

From the caption: "Although somehow related to the Sun's changing magnetic field, the energy mechanism that creates and sustains a Solar prominence is still a topic of research."

I would suggest that one area of research that might prove fruitful would be "electricity". :clouds1:

FYI, the "Granddaddy" of all recorded eruptions took place on June 28th 1945

The amount of power it would take to create such an erruption is simply mind boggling IMO.
