Collimation effects

I have a question about collimation....

I know that good collimation is important for giving sharp views of stars, but does it have a significant effect on views of more diffuse objects such as galaxies?

I recollimated my scope after fitting a new focuser and this definitely led to better collimation. I've only had one night to test this, but it seemed to me that structural detail in galaxies was more apparent in the recollimated scope (on a night when conditions were not exceptionally good). Is this likely or was it just my imagination?
