A bit of a mod to the starGAZer 12 mount

Not been completely happy with the movement of the mount in Azimuth using

teflon pads.

Too sticky when pointing straight up.

Saw these fixed castors in B&Q the other day and decided to give them a try.

Anyway, the AZ motion is now very smooth with just enough grab to stop

the scope rolling round on it's own. 8)

Now I know it works, I will be getting a few more to fill in the gaps :D

Gaz

It works well (only had chance to try it maybe 3 times due to weather)

Better than the teflon setup.

Only drawback is that it separates the top/bottom board by quite a bit.

When I get chance, I'm going to experiment with sticking some more

rollers in but I can't see it making much difference.

Don't get casters that swivel though, they might swing the wrong

way and stop the thing going round

:D

Hey Phil

Maybe you could sink the castors into the baseboard to reduce the gap

When I got my Dob OTA, Phil, I followed the design you posted some time ago for the base, unfortunately, being in a hurry, I used damp resistant chip board, happened to have some left over from a job. I also fitted the castor mod to the base, and I find it works fairly well, if not a little lumpy when moving from one area to another, otherwise fairly good. Maybe one day I will remake it in melamine / MDF, but so far can recommend the castor idea.

Good idea Mike.. 8)

I think if I make any more DOB bases I will try another method...

Route a half round groove in top and bottom board and fill the groove

with marbles to make a ginormouse "lazy susan" bearing.

In fact, two grooves, a smaler one near the centre as well.

They made a dinining table with a large diameter turntable top

using this method in Changing Rooms on telly once..

It worked very well as long as you dont totaly fill the grooves with

marbles (leave a few gaps for them to roll about)
