Thanks, what I had in mind was an instrument like a light meter or a way I could use my own scope with the software available.

Here's a light instrument. Don't think I'd want to spend almost $120 for it though. Is there a rough indication as to certain stars that you can see in your area suggests x amount of light pollution?

TBH, the easiest way is to find your limiting magnitude. Wait until it gets dark then find a star of known magnitude somewhere around the zenith, if you can see that then go for a fainter one. Keep going until you aren't able to see one and that's your limiting magnitude.

As an example I can just make out Megrez in UMa on good nights here so my limiting magnitude is around mag. 3.3 .
