Kielder next week

Recommended Posts

There seems to have been a lot of chat regarding the SGL Party but it's only a week until Kielder :) :) :D

Just wondering what everybody has got planned for the weekend?

Myself? Well I am coming down with a mate late Friday afternoon and possibly his 11 year old boy (Not definate yet) and plan to see as many objects from 'Turn left at Orion' as I can. I have also made a little piggy back mount that can hold my ToUCam and a 80-200mm lens, so hoping to get a couple of good shots with my recently modded webcam :)

Also hoping to get a few hints/tips from the rest of you guys, would be good if somebody could show me how to work the dam setting circles! Oh and maybe check my collimination to see if I am doing it correctly :)

Oh and I hear there is a good local nearby? Would be good to have a few beers with some of you guys as well.

Lastly as I only turned up last time when it was getting dark I dont know any of your faces! Somebody said in another post that the Gazebo will be up again this time, is this the meeting place for SGL members or just everybody?

I will be the guy looking a little out of my depth :) with none of that fancy goto kit etc, just an 8" OO Newt and an EQ5 with a bit of white shelving and an old camera lens attached 8), hanging about with another guy who will be looking about as confused as me as we both try to set up our tents for the first time :D

The rabble that are the organisers are hoping to be up there on Tuesday evening  just so we can do a risk assessment and work on our strategic withdrawl plan, 8) which of course will be undertaken with the utmost regard to the safety of fellow stargazers and done with due diligence :)

So we will be in the PUB then :) :)

PS. As you come down from the main road onto the camp site you will turn right and down a bank and before you reach the bridge there will be a big caravan, a big blue tent and a big green tent, pop in and say HELLO :D

There will be a few of the "rabble" stumbling about trying to look

like they have the slightest clue what they are there for. <a href="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fwww.smileycentral.com%252F%253Fpartner%253DZSzeb008%255FZNfox000%2526i%253D23%252F23%255F11%255F52%2526feat%253Dprof/page.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_11_52.gif" alt="SmileyCentral.com" border="0">

Ask one of them they will probably just grunt and point you in the right direction...

They should be wearing yellow fluorescent vests to make them selves known from a distance...

If You need to approach any of the rabble it is far safer to distract them with something shiny, say for instance "a can of lager" :) They are easily distracted and you will find that they can be controlled up to the point that the said can is empty. :sad11: They then revert to type and wander round aimlessly trying to find new shiny geegaw's to entertain themselves with. :violent1: Failing that just appeal to their better nature and you might be supprised :)

:)

:D

:D

:)

On second thoughts just stick with the LAGER :occasion5: it works everytime :)

Is there anything planned for the Saturday during the day? Also will the Kielder Observatory be open at all? Or is it not built yet?

Lo Blinky

There are a few talks planned for the Saturday plus I think there might be a few Vendors present. We are trying to keep this a small and sort of unique event if you know what I mean, more like a meet and greet where you get to meet the people and talk Astro :) but we are open to suggestions :) The Kielder Obs is at the moment in the tendering stage so unfortunately nothing to look at yet.

Is anybody here getting an electric hookup? I only ask as I might need to borrow one (in exchange for some cans :)) to charge my camera batteries. Thats assuming I actually get the change to use it :)

I booked a hard standing site for sat/sun nights (not sure if that has electric hookup though)

Unfortunately my wife is ill just now and so I'm unsure if I'll make it next weekend :) am really looking forward to it too!

Does anybody have the GPS Coordinates i.e. Lat/Long for the campsite? When I came down the last time I out in Kielder Campsite to my GPS but it was a diffrent one. Luckily enough I was driving past the correct campsite and saw a 'site full' sign and thought this must be the place!

Also means I can set the alt or az? Whatever on my scope before I leave.

Is that any kind of lager or is there a preferred option?? :)

Similarly, I too may need to charge up a battery or two... if this requires lager than let me know... :)

If not i will paying you a charging visit.

I assume we will have access to the warm room, but if it is full of chargers just pop along to the Bat Cave and I'm sure we can sort you out. 8)
