A Visual observing "vs" Imaging Poll. Which one are you ?

Hi All

Looking through the recent post list it's becoming more obvious that imaging is becoming a huge drive behind astronomy with new member looking only to do this or plan to only do so at some point.

Since joining the forum I have been blown away by some of the truly amazing deep sky & planetary images on the forum. I was also surprise to see how many members only look through the ep to get initial alignment for imaging and that's it (and some techys don't even need to do that :))

Although I have dabbled in some simple webcam imaging and agree the challenge makes it a buzz when it dose pay off, I could never stray away from the feeling of seeing the object with my own eyes no matter how "is that it" it might look to some people. For this reason I would consider myself a visual observer and never likely to get the imaging bug.

I'm not sure if this has been done before but I thought I would have a poll on whether you are a:

VISUAL OBSERVER: 1

STRICTLY IMAGER: 0

They are not mutually exclusive.

I enjoy visual and also am quite enjoying video astronomy.

When light pollution or the moon washes out what would be a grey smudge visually, video tends to see through all that and provide clear, vivid, real time colour images.

I was trying to observe the Carina nebula visually with a 14" SCT and 36mm Hyperion Aspheric eyepiece and, because of an almost full moon and some haze, couldn't make it out - switched on the Samsung video camera that was connected to the piggybacked 80mm refractor and BANG!! large, detailed, vivid full colour image............there is no comparison.

But again, each has its own uses and are not mutually exclusive - just another tool at our disposal to be used when conditions require it.

I did think this one was going to be a difficult one to define .

I originally considered a "BOTH VISUAL & IMAGING" but couldn't see how images that take hours to achieve would leave the observer with any time to visually observe

OK I put this down to a lame attempt to pass time until the clouds clear and admit there will be only one clear winner. :)

*****BOTH VISUAL & IMAGING**** :):hello2:B)

I enjoy doing both. The time I spend at the eyepiece means more to me, but it is nice to be able to look at the images too.

I have tried sketching, but I find it really difficult to get a decent result in the dark. It is a good way to improve your powers of observation though.
