Skywatcher Quattro f4 Imaging Newtonian telescopes

The new 8-inch and 10-inch Skywatcher Quattro f4 Imaging Newtonians will be arriving around the first week in July :)

Both steel and carbon-fibre options will be available and will feature a new heavy-duty Linear Power dual-speed focuser.

Forget what you have seen and heard about f4 Imaging Newtonians, this is the real thing ;)

They have been added to our website, if you click on the 'notify me when available' button you will receive an automated email the day they arrive. We will also update this thread.

There are a lot of people waiting for these, if you know you want one it is best that you place your order soon.

No, they don't have motors. There is still some confusion as to precisely what focuser is included, we are not sure whether it is a Crayford or a high quality rack-and-pinion. It does promise to have a greater load-bearing capacity and be less prone to focus shift than Skywatcher's existing focusers.

2” LINEAR POWER FOCUSER

The 2” Linear Power Focuser includes two 360 degree freely rotating mechanism. It allows users to generously adjust the focusing wheel, eyepiece or camera at any given angle. It is also engraved with scale that provides better details when in the focusing position. The gap roller bearing of the focuser is also adjustable. It minimizes image shift while focusing and supporting heavy accessories. The smooth design of the roller bearing and vibration damping creates superb stability, while needing less grease; this will significantly reduce the issues that are caused by grease due to the fluctuation of temperatures.

Do we know the weight difference between the steel and carbon versions yet? thats some price difference asuming everything else is the same? They do look very nice though, I am very tempted!

Not yet but we'll be taking measurements and weights when they arrive.

Carbon-fibre is not only lighter than steel, it is also more dimensionally stable (doesn't expand or contract as much with temperature changes) and is warm to the touch so should produce less tube currents (resulting from the difference in temperature between a steel tube and air). The price difference is not insignificant though so we expect steel tubes to be as popular as Carbon Fibre.

My MN190 had two piggyback screws on it, for attaching guidescope rings to the top of the OTA. I used the one off my 80ED as the second.

As for the Quattros, they look very good, and pretty cheap for CF. If it wasn't for my Mak Newt, I'd be in the waiting list!

They are used to adjust the secondary support 'spider' vanes and to hold them tight. Your Maksutov-Newtonian doesn't use them (the secondary is fixed to the front corrector lens) but they are common-place on traditional Newtonians.

If they are f/4 then I suspect the focal lengths are going to be 800mm for the 200 and 1000mm for the 250?

Do they come with a case is what I would like to know. :)

No info up on tube weights yet. I wonder just how much lighter those carbon fibre tubes are compared to the steel ones?

It looks like the 12" could be a steel tube. Different part number prefix and no mention of CF.

Yes, the 12" model will only be available with a steel tube. Unfortunately we are not expecting one anytime soon so it isn't listed on our website. It would need a serious mount and ideally an observatory as a Newtonian that size can act like a sail in the wind!
