I have spent the last year building my own observatroy and photographing and documenting every step along the way.

I have built a dedicated website to help anyone else who wishes to attemp the same or similar project at home.

Here it is, check it out and please enjoy.

God bless,

Barry

You have put a lot of wotk into that project Barry, and you have made real good job of it.

Congratulations. Have you had an opening ceremony?

By the way, how many cans of Fosters went into it?.

MartinB is going to build his own Ob. too. No set time yet. Maybe you could arrange a holiday to coincide with the start of building. He might appreciate some help.

Good Luck. Ron. :D

Hi Barry

I think i know where the unknown quote is from (from your website)

"The devil's greatest feat, was to convince the world that he doesn't exist." Unknown.

It was in the film "The Usual Suspects" quoted by "Verbal" Kint (Kevin Spacey) towards the end of the film.

Thanks, Kai,

Its funny, that quote has been on my site for months, and my brother just mentioned the usual suspects reference last night.

Thanks for that mate, I will look into it.

Baz.

Broke the third crank mechanism! The dome is just too heavy! I wore out two round holes for a crank handle into oblong holes in just a few complete rotations. Two 1/2 inch holes through mild steel rhs turned into 1/2 inch by 1 inch oblongs.

So now i have built a SUPER CRANK MECHANISM out of two 25mm roller bearings side by side. I'll be getting Ron to put it on the site for me, on the support ring page.

Until then, heres a pic.

You had better get some lubrication into them Bearings too Barry, or you will be getting some more grief in future. They look awfully dry to me mate. Sorry to nit pick, I am sure you had it in mind to do a maintenance check. :D :D Ron.

Noted mate, thank you. At the time of the photo, I had only just welded the thing together. I bolted it on for a test run and took a pic once i proved it was going to work. A bit of a tidy up is in order, some sanding and painting, re-fit then oil it all up!

Hi again Baz

I've now been in your country (WA) for over a month, with three weeks still yet to go.

Its been fantastic looking at a night sky, so different to ours in the Northern Hemisphere.

Went up to meet all the guys at the Astronomy Group of WA in Perth last night, and very enjoyable it was too.

It is fantastic isn't it? I have heard that northern hemisphere observers often covet our skies. Enjoy it lots while you can mate. I used to live in Perth, its a beautiful city. Check out Hillary's boat harbor and the Perth museum while you are there.

Baz.
