Question about Mono CCDs

Apologies if this seems obvious to you but I can't seem to find an answer on these forums or on the internet.

How do you get colour images from a mono camera when used with a hydrogen alpha telescope? Since the telescope contains a Ha filter am I right in thinking that using RGB filters is pointless?

Also is there an advantage in using a DMK41 over a DMK21?

You are right in assuming that RGB filters won't help you here. The colour is added using PhotoShop and in particular the 'Hue/Saturation' option with 'Colorize' (sic) option ticked. You do the colouring in two stages, first the sphere (tending to orange) and then any prominences (tending to red) but you can use any colours you want of course.

It would be fair to say that these solar images are 'false colour' images but nothing wrong with that!

False color is applied in postprocessing to the mono image - yellow, orange or red, whatever you want. CaK images usually are turned violet.

DMK41 has bigger sensor and will catch bigger part of the Sun at once.

You can almost identify the person who took the picture by their choice of colour and processing style..... DMK41 seems to be the Solar choice... grabs big chunks of real estate pretty quickly. The DMK21 is better for planes that need lots more frames and the DMK31 is the halfway house. There is a DMK51 with a yet bigger sensor, but it'll cost more.... how many pixlesdo you want in one go? You can always use Microsoft ICE (free) to sticth subimages easily?!
