Which Photoshop

Hello,

I have tried to find various Photoshop like programs for editing things like star trails and sketches I do.

There seem to be quite a lot of them, designed by different companies and some costing money! I am looking for a free one.

Does a free one exist? And if so which one is the best?

GIMP is my preference, although Paint.NET is good also. I found Paint.NET harder to transition to from Photoshop, might just be me though

Paint.NET will handle 16bit images which is an advantage

Thanks for your replies, I have actually already got GIMP, (I probably should have mentioned that:o). I just wanted the general consensus on what was the best and to know if any of the other programs could do any other useful things.
