Hi everyone, not sure if this is the correct forum for this thread but thought it was close enough to topic In prep for my Pulsar Obsy build a couple of months from now I’m looking to get ahead of software requirements for the dome. Can anybody provide advice on a decent ‘Skinny’ software stack for mount and dome control. Observing has been simple for me thus far, only need to worry about mount control. However, I got to thinking about how clumsy and inefficient things would be if goto commands were two separate unrelated actions one for mount control from my chosen planetarium so

Hi all, As i am soon to be the proud owner of a Vixen Polarie star tracker i am looking for some advice from the experts here on SGL with regards to widefield imaging with the Vixen Polarie. I will initially be using it with a modified Canon 600D so am looking for advice on which lens would be best suited to use with it, I have already been pointed in the direction of the Samyang 135mm which by all accounts is a pretty good contender, so aside from that particular lens what other/s would you recommend that are Canon fitting, Thanks in advance

Guys just wondering what options are available for me to upgrade the standard SXW Vixen clamp to enable it to accept Losmandy style dovetails. I recently acquired a CGE dovetail that I would like to use with my 8” Edge. Kind Regards Paul

Hi there everybody, hope you are all keeping sane during COVID. As already revealed in an earlier thread I will be building an observatory this year. Whilst it’s a bit early for the exterior elements of the build, I’m keeping busy putting together all the accessories I will need from an interior perspective. In doing so I’ve discovered a couple of thorny issues. 1/. I will need a 2.1mm power lead from Vixen to connect up to my new Pegasus UPB2; oh and just saying, what a fantastic piece of kit it is too. If needs be I can always buy in the whoppingly over-priced AC/DC adapter from Vi

Wondering what a realistic load capy. is for a Vixen APZ. My biggest scope is an ST120 refractor that weighs about 5.5 kg with 8x50 finder and eyepiece. I'm thinking of upgrading to a Crayford focuser which I believe will add another half kilo or so. I currently have a Twilight 1 which seems maxed out with the 120 and a SkyWatcher AZ5 which handles it a bit better, but it's also close to max load, I think. I have a Manfrotto 475B and a stock TW1 tripod. I'd prefer not to use a counterweight, but if it's a necessity, so be it. Thanks!

Hi, Just got an asiair pro and am setting things up. Have updated to the latest firmware. The aap and my ss2k seem to connect OK. However when I issue a goto command to the ss2k, nothing actually happens at the mount. However the 4 directional arrows on the aap ui work fine and do indeed make the mount move. Any clues please? regards Andrew

Hi, I have Skytee 2 mount, on which I use the side mount for my 200p and use the top mount for my 127 Mak, sometimes at the same time. (Yes, I got carried away with secondhand bargain madness during the first lockdown ) What I would like to do is use the top mount to mount my 15x70 binoculars so I can let the family see what I'm looking at without having change the height of eyepieces on the scope or them using steps. For this I would need a sturdy adaptor which has a dovetail (vixen?) base with the normal screw fit for the tripod mounting bracket between the lenses. Does

My first post here – hello! – and I would welcome some advice. I have a Vixen 4” refractor (not the fluorite lense) on a Super Polaris mount, which I bought new about 25 years ago. I do enjoy looking at the major planets and some of the brighter Messier objects – I still remember my children seeing Jupiter and Saturn for the first time! However, I’d like to move from this being an occasional hobby for a few hours on a clear night, to something more serious, with a focus on astrophotography. The Super Polaris mount seems to have been discontinued a few years ago, and there’s no ‘off t

After a long break, I'm getting back into Astrophotography and finding that I'm missing my old Vixen GPDX mount. I'm quite interested to hear if anyone has anything similar for sale. I'd prefer a mount with GOTO but I'd definitely consider something with drives and a guide port. Thanks for looking.

Anyone here familiar with this Vixen binoculars, Vixen Binoculars Ascot ZR 8 x 42WP I can't seem to find any reviews on the net. It costs around £140, about the same as many other low-mid range porro models from top tier brands such as Nikon Action EX. While Vixen refractors (Made in Japan models e.g. ED81S) are known for quality, their binos seem to be very inconsistent according to many reviews (other models). I'd be glad to hear some personal experiences with Vixen binos even if it isn't the model I listed. Many thanks.

Well, I was finally able to put the newly repaired Sphinx through its paces over the weekend, Saturday night turned out a bit of a bust weather wise, however it gave me the advantage of already being set up for the following evening which was a completely different story. Sunday...? Transparency not all that great, (perhaps NELM variable 3 to 5) and with a half moon shining, not ideal conditions for deep sky observing, however was still able to bag a few old favourites, including M53, M13, M92 and M51, M81 & 82. Then spent the next two hours exploring some galaxies in Canes Venati

Hi there Everyone, I experienced an issue with my Sphinx SXW Mount this past weekend at a dark skies event I was attending. When I came to set up the mount I noted that the declination axis rotation was obstructed, basically you could rotate about 90 degrees and then it would suddenly come to hard stop, knowing this was just not right, I immediately halted my setup and packed the mount away, with a plan to carry out some diagnostics today once I got home. Once home, I set the mount up, and discovered the following 1/. The declination axis was now freed up..., mo

I like the width & sturdiness of Losmandy saddles & dovetail bars. They seem, especially for wide &/or heavier OTAs, better suited with a wider platform and more metal locking on more metal. So was considering one for my Skytee 2 & other mounts to replace the Vixen/SW, which look wimpier by comparison. https://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/language/en/info/p4432_Starway-Losmandy-3--dovetail-rail--254mm-length.html https://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p10191_TS-Optics-Optics-Losmandy-Level-dovetail-clamp---Length-250-mm.html h

I was wondering if any of you have used Vixen PL eyepieces before? When I buy my new scope ( either a 130p/150p dob) I was looking to purchase some of these eyepieces to use instead of the stock ones as people tend to say they aren’t great at best. The eyepieces looking to get are the 25mm ones and 10mm. Is there a big difference using these then using the stock ones. Or if not the vixen eyepieces any alternatives that are in that price range. Or is it worth just keeping the stock EPs for a while. Just want to get the best possible views from the get go. Many Thanks

Hi there, Is there such a thing as a Vixen dovetail bar specifically designed for the EdgeHD? I note that there are CGE specific bars in the classic Celestron orange livery, but I have been unable to find a vixen style equivalent. I need the bar for my 8” Edge to allow the mounting of my new Guidescope mount. If no exact equivalent, can someone recommend an appropriate replacement. I am wary of plumbing for just any old generic bar. I would prefer direct attachment to the OTA as opposed to the use of radius blocks, need to keep overall weight down. Kind Regards Paul J.

Hi there I currently control my Sphinx SXW from SkySafari, and in general the user interface from SS is much more intuitive than the Starbook controller, however one aspect that I haven't quite mastered is slew control when zeroing in on an object either close to, or in the field of view. With the Starbook controller the slew speed is contolled by the zoom level in effect at the time. On SS the same principle applies, however I've found that it doesn't seem to provide the same granularity of fine control as that of the Starbook, even after adjusting the speed using the slider in SS. Would b

Hi there everyone, I’m interested in getting peoples take on where they think mount control technology will go in the years to come. I currently control my Sphinx SXW remotely and almost entirely from SS on my iOS devices. Although this works a treat, it still employs a technique that is a mish-mash of separate components rather than an integrated wireless solution, along the lines for example of TV wireless integration. As far as I am aware none of the major players in the amateur astro mount market have yet addressed this in the form of a complete integrated solution, I may however be w

I'm selling this very nice condition Vixen GP mount which comes complete with twin MT1 motor drives and handset, polar scope and original aluminium tripod with accessory tray. It also has an original green counterweight (not the small white one shown) can check the weight at the weekend. The mount functions very well and smoothly, copes with my C9.25 for visual albeit on an EQ6 tripod. Some may say that an EQ is not needed for visual but I find it excellent for planetary, lunar and solar observing where the simple tracking keeps the target centred and allows you to draw out more detail.
