First nebula imaged with my newly acquired Canon 600D (modded). Lots of struggles with tracking so only managed 20 subs x 30s of lights. Really pleased with the amount of red nebulosity that was captured in this short session though so looking forward to more to come in the future. Processed using siril and startools.© Kevin Hurley, 2022

Hi. After finally getting a clear night after what feels like months off cloud cover I finally managed to take my skywatcher heritage 150p (virtuoso) scope outside again for a spot of observing. I'm a beginner and my current goal is to target some nebulae. It was a very chilly night so i focused on m42 as my first target using my svbony 7-21mm and it was beautiful to see. I was able to make out some of the nebula structure and zoom in on the Orion Trapezium Cluster. I've since been looking into getting a filter to get a clearer view of the nebula and future nebula tagets. From my googling so far it points me at purchasing a uhc filter. As there are a few options on the market I was hoping to get some opinions from anyone with a similar scope on the benefit of a uhc filter and whether the more expensive Astronomik UHC Filter (£89) would be worth getting over a Explore Scientific UHC Nebula Filter (£47) or Castell UHC Ultra High Contrast Filter (£38). These seem to be the ones which come up time and again on forums but any opinions on other filters for nebula observation for this type of scope would also be welcome and greatly appreciated. Thank you

Reprocessed the pervious image - using Startools again but this time stretched to the point where the noise is visible in the image. The nebulosity comes out now but it's accompanied by grainy bands unfortunately. 120 lights - 30s @ ISO 100, 20 darks, 23 flats, 20 biases. I think I needed more darks.© Kevin Hurley, 2021

Clear skies were forecast for most of the night so I decided to give the 150P a go at the telescope targets (which I failed to get anywhere with using the ST80, that was mostly due to a bad night though). Found the first target, the Crab Nebula (M1), something I had not seen before. Not brilliant seeing conditions, on a better night may even be able to make out some structure, but tonight it just looked like a grey blob. Other highlights of the night include my first sighting of the Great Red Spot - evident as a pale gap in the upper cloud belt (as seen in the telescope). It was at the correct time for the spot to be visible so I assumed this was it, as it is not red at the moment. Also managed to get decent views of the Orion Nebular, the Fish's Mouth and Trapezium stars, although could not focus fully using the 5mm due to seeing conditions. Tried for the Owl cluster but the clouds were already rolling in and seeing conditions had taken a dive. Jupiter had a big halo around it and my optics were dewing up (even my glasses).

What a great night last night. Found my first Virgo cluster galaxies! Located without seeing anything in my finderscope - figured I must be in the right place as there were almost no stars. Had to take a quick shot at high ISO to confirm there were galaxies there. Really pleased to see 3 Messier galaxies and a whole bunch more pop out after 20 min. If I hadn't spent a hour messing about with polar alignment and collimation I would have grabbed more integration time. Oh well - lesson learned. While this was imaging I got out my binoculars and found M104 too. Will try to image if there's another good night like last night.© Kevin Hurley, 2021

Skywatcher 150P with Nikon D3200 at prime focus. 30 x 20s subs. ISO 200. Unguided, tracking only. Stacked with flats and darks in Deep Sky Stacker and then processed in Startools. Full moon was just rising while Orion was due south. I'm pretty surprised at the quality of the image given the moon.-
