I’m going to do a 1 or 2 month tour of Europe in my camper van this spring and I would like to visit a planetarium either in Europe or the UK, preferably avoiding London and Paris or other major cities with low emission zones. I visited the planetarium in London when I was a child and thoroughly enjoyed it but I see it is now closed. I am planning to visit the space centre in Leicester on my way home which seems to get mixed reviews regarding having a lot aimed at children. I was surprised at how many planetariums there actually are with a google search. Can anyone recommend one, or a good public observatory? TIA
  3. Today Stellarium's development team published version with support of outlines for deep-sky objects. We use the compatible with SkyChart (Cartes du Ciel) format of file for storing an outlines data for deep-sky objects. The command 'start' has name of DSO also. Our outlines.dat file was partially got from CdC/SkyChart. Now we want to get a volunteers, who can help us create a good outlines for big deep-sky objects for two projects - Stellarium and Cartes du Ciel/SkyChart.
  4. Stellarium 0.16.0

    Stellarium 0.16.0 is a stable version (based on Qt5.6 but it can still be built from sources with Qt5.4) that introduces some new features and closes 38 bug and wishlist reports. New features include - RemoteSync plugin, which allows running several connected instances of Stellarium. - Non-spherical models for solar system objects like asteroids and small moons. - Solar system config file is now split into two parts. - AstroCalc feature extension: What's Up Tonight, graphs, ... - DSO: Addition of catalogs of peculiar galaxies and planetary nebulae (standard edition of catalog contains over 83,000 objecs; extended edition of catalog contains over million objects) - New Skycultures: Belarusian, Hawaiian Star Lines - Telescope plugin: support for the RTS2 telescope system. - Location can now be read from a GPS device.   5. It looks like my 2,5 years daughter shows an interest in learning astronomy. Already knows names of all planets and most important moons of solar system. I would like her to learn constellations (she can already identify Orion) and I thought apart from showing her patterns on the sky as well as on the piece of paper it would be nice to get home planetarium. Does anyone have any recommendations for good quality one?
  6. As you know we use version 0.90.0.xxxx for "unstable binary packages" of Stellarium and those packages may have a new interesting features for testing. In any way version 0.90.0.xxxx has a lot fixes of bugs and it may be interested for users, who are preferred used "bleeding edge" of software. I've created this topic for informing community about new interesting features for testing for one side, and get a feedback (with reports about problems, of course) from testers-voluteers in other side. Let's try make Stellarium better by together.   8. As in the Title, there was a planetarium on the antiques and collectables television programme, "Four Rooms" tonight - just finished. Sold for £1000 but could have done better at up to £3000. The seller was happy though as he wanted the money for a school to buy an astro camera for their observatory and that was the amount he wanted.
  9. For years I've been a loyal user of Stellarium, it's very simple to use and provides me with most of what I need. I would unreservedly recommend it as an essential tool to anyone starting out in astronomy. The great folks behind it are very active and continually working on improvements and new features. But there are several other free planetarium programs including Cartes du Ciel and C2A and a few more. I discovered C2A a few days ago, and it has some interesting features, especially for observation planning. There a pop-ups to show when an object will be visible, a graphic of Moon phases etc. and a built-in log book facility. You can also add a very wide range of object catalogues. So, what are people using? And what are the pros and cons of different programs?

    Today Stellarium has been published for public testing. We are refactored the GUI for deep-sky objects and catalog of the their objects. Plus we introduced few new options for DSO.
