  1. 7 sightings over the last week... some better than others, but each observation offering something slightly different. Caught the crescent moon as well, so thrown these in here. Have loads of data to enjoy processing over the next few weeks, but here are a few that I've sorted so far (in edition to my two recent posts). Will add to this thread as I sort... Damian Crescent Moon D7000 + BORG90FL + 1.08x multi flattener 9.55pm 24th June 2020 Shot through tree branches to add a frame and some atmosphere over a straight shot. NLCs 24th June 2020 11.52pm D3 + 24-70 6sec f/2.8 24mm ISO200 Had hoped to get a shot of the moon embedded in the NLCs, but not to be... Plough, Pole Star and NLCs 25th June 2020 11.11pm D3 + 24-70 5sec f/2.8 24mm ISO200 A lovely subtle display, camera virtually pointing straight up. Not quite in focus. Reminded me of a Coronal Northern Lights display... NLCs 25th June 2020 11.14pm D3 + 24-70 4sec f/2.8 24mm ISO200 NLCs 25th June 2020 11.39pm D3 + 24-70 5sec f/2.8 24mm ISO200 The shot I had wanted to capture in my head the night before... 2. This mornings display was far more subtle than the previous day, but actually made for a nice shot. Very high up and in a lovely fan shape which I’ve not seen before and my NLC sightings are now into double figures. Composed at a jaunty angle to anchor the image with the tree and provide some scale, dodge the street lights and capture the brightest segment. They must have extended right up towards the zenith... Nikon D3 FX (full frame), Nikkor AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, tripod mounted, cable release and mirror lock function. Processed in Adobe Lightroom. Taken from north Lichfield (Staffordshire). Single shot. D3 - ISO 200, 0.6 sec, f/2.8, 24mm, 3.33am Got a few more (all basically the same to check through) and need to work out the stars/constellation (Cassiopeia), above right at some stage.... off now to do some more NLC hunting! Damian
  3. Wasn't prepared gear wise, so made do photographing from home and trying to shield the lens from the street lights... ended up concentrating on close up shots. ‘Trusty’ or should that be crusty, old Nikon D3 FX (full frame), Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED and Nikon D7000 DX with Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VRII, tripod mounted, cable release and mirror lock function. Processed in Adobe Lightroom, just trying out some different colour palettes. Taken from north Lichfield (Staffordshire). Single shot. D3 - ISO 200, 1.3 sec, f/3.2, 62mm, 2.46am Single shot. D3 - ISO 200, 1.3 sec, f/3.2, 70mm, 2.50am Single shot. D7000 - ISO 100, 2 sec, f/2.8, 70mm, 2.53am Single shot. D7000 - ISO 100, 2 sec, f/2.8, 70mm, 2.55am Single shot. D7000 - ISO 100, 2 sec, f/2.8, 70mm, 2.57am Single shot. D7000 - ISO 100, 1.3sec, f/2.8, 70mm, 2.58am Single shot. D7000 - ISO 100, 1sec, f/2.8, 90mm, 3.12am Single shot. D7000 - ISO 100, 1sec, f/2.8, 90mm, 3.12am Single shot. D7000 - ISO 100, 1sec, f/2.8, 90mm, 3.13am Single shot. D3 - ISO 200, 0.8 sec, f/3.2, 70mm, 3.17am Single shot. D3 - ISO 200, 0.6 sec, f/3.2, 70mm, 3.18am A link back to same sort of time last year. might even be clear again tonight... Damian
  4. Sunday 30th June. NLCs started appearing as the skies cleared around 1.45am. Grabbed gear and headed off around 2.15am to the same location as last two sessions. Another 90 shots taken! Nikon D3 and Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, tripod mounted, cable release and mirror lock function. Lightly processed in Adobe Lightroom and (where required), stitched shots together in Photoshop CC2017 Taken from north Lichfield (Staffordshire). Clicking the pictures should open the hi-res images. Panoramic 1 - 7 shots. ISO 200, 2.5 sec, f/2.8, 70mm, 2.56am. Note over in the far right the Pleiades. Panoramic 2 (Detail) - 4 shots. ISO 200, 2.5 sec, f/2.8, 200mm, 3.01am 'The Saucepan and NLCs' - Single shot - (Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED). ISO 200, 2 sec, f/2.8, 24mm, 3.22am Started to pack away just as 'Mr Blackbird' started to sing - the dawn chorus broke.... then noticed a beautiful sight over in the East, switched back to the Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II and added the TC-14EII 1.4x A 7% Crescent Moon. Single shot - ISO 200, 0.8 sec, f/4, 280mm, 3.28am Damian
  5. Great view of noctilucent clouds this morning from the beach at Selsey, West Sussex. A very extensive display which elevated in altitude quite considerably over time. Last structures disappeared from view around 04:16 BST. Pete
  6. My first sighting of NLC's season 2013... this display in bright full moonlight looking north towards Kelso racecourse around midnight. Pentax K5 Pentax 35mm f2.8 macro DA lens Exp 6 secs each pane iso 200 Noctilucent Clouds - Kelso by mikeyscope, on Flickr
  7. Very quick process before heading to work. Saw the start of the clouds last night and headed off with the gear to get a shot. Much smaller and dimmer than the last show the previous week. Nikon D3 and Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, tripod mounted, cable release and mirror lock function. Lightly processed in Adobe Lightroom. Taken from north Lichfield (Staffordshire). Single shot. ISO 200, 2.5 sec, f/2.8, 75mm, 11.33pm Damian
  8. If anyone is interested there is a bright and extensive NLC display in progress NOW reaching up to Capella in altitude, best display for some time! Mike
  9. Better luck this morning with NLC very low on NNE horizon over London recorded from bedroom window ;-) How do you estimate the NLC range from its altitude above the horizon knowing the angular width of the photo? Nytecam
  10. Worked from home Friday afternoon and decided at the last minute to bring my Manfrotto tripod back home with me and then recharge the camera battery - just had a feeling.... good job as well, as my first noctilucent cloud observation of the 2019 season happened later on(!) - plus on the Solstice, can’t get better than that. Got 250 shots to play with today (whilst the wife was away on a girls Spa day), of which these are the best... Trusty old Nikon D3 (full frame), Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, tripod mounted, cable release and mirror lock function. Saw from my north facing home-office window an interesting feature or two, so swapped to the NIKKOR AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, to try and get some extra details and get around the streetlights! Single shot - Detail 1. ISO 200, 2 sec, f/4.5, 200mm, 11.48pm Animation 1 - 40 shots stitched in iMovie.
