Friends, this is Ha data from the last few clear nights collected with my Canon 300 mm f/4 (ca 20 x 10 min ISO 1600) and 5" refractor (ca 16 x 20 min) sitting side by side, to which I added RGB data from the Canon lens collected in December (76 x 3 min). I also post the 5" refractor image as it is quite detailed. All with my trusted Canon 60D cameras (60Da on the refractor) on my EQ8. Further details can be found on my Astrobin. This is a two panel mosaic (with central overlap) that has been waiting to get processed - for some reason my first attempt to process it reached a dead end where I was rather disappointed with the results and gave up. But with clouds and moon conspiring I have made a new attempt from scratch. Taken with my Canon 300 mm f/4 (@f/4) on my triple rig on the same night as the previously posted Samyang 135 and ES 127ED images, so 21 Dec 2017. Like my Samyang mosaic, this is an accidental mosaic created by a shift in framing after the meridian flip, resulting in a somewhat unusual framing. Stacked in PI and processed in PS. 76x3min @ ISO1600. Here is my previous post with the little Samyang and 5" refractor: Comments & suggestions most welcome Cheers Göran
  3. During the few clear nights we've had lately, I've managed to get some time on the California Nebula. I thought I couldn't catch this target with my unmodded DSLR, but last fall, when I was doing some wide field, I found out that my camera picked it up. So, here's somewhat of a close up. NGC 1499 down to Atik. Imaged over 2 nights in January, a mixture of 3 & 4 minutes subs. Mount: SW EQ3-2 Goto Camera: Pentax K20D unmodded, with 135 mm f/3.5 lens @ ISO 1600, f/4 30 * 3 and 4 minutes exposures (unguided and dithered) Processed in PI. This is still a WIP, as I want to do star reduction and try to enhance the faint nebulosity that may just be visible in this image.

    My first Ha nebula image with my new 3nm Astrodon filter. Although the California Nebula disappeared below my horizon before I had captured all the data I wanted, I was quite impressed with the amount of detail revealed by stacking just four subs. The details where enhanced in PS with a High Pass Filter and HDR toning. LIGHTS: 4 x 1800s Ha. DARKS: 30; FLATS: 40; BIAS: 100 at -20C.
  6. Just got a nice surprise! In the plate solving that is automatically done when images are uploaded to Astrobin, I just noticed that in one of my California Nebula images (from 21 Dec 2017), there was also something identified as IC2005. Looking it up it turns out to be a galaxy that is apparently bright enough to shine through the red nebulosity. So, here it is, lurking in the right end of the image (arrow). I also post a crop of the galaxy area (with IC2005 in the centre). I do not know anything about it - wonder if anyone does? The image was taken with my ES 127ED refractor (@ FL 752mm) and a Canon 60Da. 18 x 8 min (so 2.4 hours) at ISO1600. Processed in PS.

  9. Not done any deep sky imaging for over 3 years. A few changes in personal circumstances have meant a new lease of life back into the hobby. So here's 80 minutes worth of 10 minute unguided Ha subs using an SX H36 camera through a Tak FSQ106 mounted on a Paramount MX+. Taken on Friday evening when I had to be up early on Saturday to get the train down to London to attend Astrofest. Calibrated the image with some flats, bias and darks taken on Sunday Morning. Minimal processing (trying to remember how to use Pixinsight) so stacked in DSS, some basic stretching in PS. I'm happy I'm back in the saddle again. I think I'll try and add some more data to this one before the winters out. Thanks for looking Steve

Due to a combination of poor UK weather and my slightly overenthusiastic approach of imaging multiple targets per night, I discovered that the California nebula (NGC1499) had disappeared below my horizon before I had acquired sufficient data to produce my intended LRGB + Ha image. Not to be deterred by this minor setback, I decided to use the 2 hours of Ha data I had acquired back in February to produce my first tone mapped image. Tone mapped Ha image Alan LIGHTS: 4 x 1800s Ha, DARKS: 30, FLATS: 40; BIAS: 100 at -20C.
  11. Reprocessed my target from last month, the California nebula. I posted the stacked but otherwise unprocessed image on the PI forum. Several people worked on it, showing what the possibilities were. I posted this as WIP before (https://stargazerslounge.com/topic/263484-ngc-1499/#comment-2887646 ) It took a while until I was pleased with star reduction and contrast, but I feel that for a better result I first have to gather more data.   12. Hi all, Back from one of the best Kielder weeks I can remember, and I've been to them all. Of the 6 nights I was there I managed to image on 5 of them for a least a few hours. Bliss. I decided to have a go at the Californian Nebula with 30 minutes subs all round. A bit if a response to Sara ( Swag72 ) attempting to steal all the photons from Spain The first night I got 13 x 30 minutes of Ha. That felt like a long time as I started with NGC1499 just on the tree line and continued well past meridian. Nights 2, 3 and 4 had a touch of milkyness at times and a few very small blobs of cloud passing so stopped imaging to let them through. These were all the OIII subs. I got 11 but had to throw one out. The framing, as you can see, should have been with the camera at 90*. Unfortunately it's bolted hard down and can't be easily moved. Ah well. A little is cropped off the bottom just for visual balance. Moravian G2 8300, Astrodon 5nm Ha and OIII, 250mm f4 camera lens at f4, DMK guider, EM200 mount. MaximDL, PS, Registar. 21 flats, 50 bias and no darks. I've looked around at a few Californian images and think I've got more Ha then normal but less OIII ! Maybe I didn't stretch it as much as some. I've looked at it enough now so will post before I mess it up by over doing things, Dave.
  13. Hi there, Well its been somtime ..infact just over 2years since i last posted a picture . I sadly sold my Morvian 2 years passed and have been without a camera untill now . I bought a ZWO 1600pro with filter wheel and 1.25 filters last week ( aplogise for the rain ) and this is the first outing with it on my Borg To make matters more intresting i also used a new PC for imaging which i thought had all the correct an up to-date software . But it wasnt untill I got SGP up and going and ready to take a shot it imforms me im using an outdated PHD2 !!!! SO not dithering for this image section . I started taking 2mins subs and then moved up to 5min subs in HA .I was unsure how much time i would get but some how dodged most of the clouds for 2.5 hours. This Picture is 50 mins of 2mins and 1hour 40mins of 5 mins . I took lots of different flats 18000 ,24000 and found 30000adu seems to work the best with Darks for this picture. (intrested to know others take on ADU for flats with the 1600) My stars arnt quite round towards the edges and i put this down to my back focus being 58mm which i hope to sort over the next week . I have stretched the image maybe a little too much for the data ,but over all im very happy with the first light of this camera and am very excited at the potential of this camera. On Thursday night I had my third session with the triple rig: a Samyang 135mm f/2, a Canon 300mm f/4 and an ES 5" apo (@ 750 mm FL f/5.9), each equipped with a Canon 60D set at ISO1600 (60Da on the 5" refractor). Temperature was around -4°C, so almost no noise in the DSLRs, but about half of the subs had to be thrown out due to clouds and after I went to bed after the meridian flip (00.30), I lost guiding at some point and for some reason my laptop had shut down when I woke up at 7. In any case, I got a fair amount of data with the Samyang (192 x 1 min = 3.2 hours at f/2). I only got 18 x 8 min of usable frames with the 5" refractor, but the subs were rather good. The canon 300 mm was possibly poorly focused. In any case it did not produce results that I like to post. So here are results of the 135 mm wide field and 752 mm close up. I used the refractor for framing after the flip but the 135 mm had for some reason moved a bit allowing me to make a mosaic (with the central part of the image with data from both before and after the flip). That accidental move brought in quite a bit of dark nebulosity and a little nebula called The Northern Trifid Nebula (NGC1579). I am quite unsure about what shade of red to use on the California. I see everything from bright orange to magenta on the web. I have gone for something in between. Yes, I know, I should add some Ha to this object.... Comments and suggestions most welcome!   15. First attempt at imaging in a while. Probably not a good idea to try this with an unmodified DSLR, but I figured I would give it a go. Only 10x300s subs before the moisture levels really started to rise and everything just became soggy. Lots of problems with guiding as well, 8 out of the 10 had some kind of guidance error show up in the frame (fortunately they were straight lines out and bak in one of the cardinal directions so they mostly got cleared up in stacking). Final image is horribly noisy due to the poor quality of the starting frames, but I am at least back in the saddle again. Someone remind me where PixInsight put the "Silk Purse from Sows Ear" function, I seem to have lost it NGC1499_CaliforniaNebula To give you an example of the frames I had to work with: ngc1499-Light-ISO800-300sec-frame3_16C Lights: 10x300s @ ISO800; Darks: 112; Bias: 489; Flats: 35 Scope: Skywatcher ED80-DS Pro Camera: Canon D60 (unmodified) Mount: SkyWatcher AZ-EQ6 GT Guiding: Skywatcher ST-80 and Lodestar X2 using PHD Processing: PixInsight I tried to move from ISO400 to ISO800 as I read that it helps with the horrible banding from the Canon camera, however now I end up with bright stars blowing out ;(

  17. I read and enjoy this form a lot. I wish I was able to post more (some) content, but I haven't been out for ages. Anyway got out last hight determined to get 1499. Started out taking 200 sec subs with my un-modded 7D. Then mister Moon came out to play, so decided to reduce the exposures to 100 secs (not really sure if that was a good strategy? Anyway here's the result of stacking in DSS (i'm not a fan of DSS but it seemed to have been good to me this time) and a histogram stretch in PI. This is an accidental mosaic since the framing of the Samyang moved after the meridian flip at midnight (it was sitting on my triple rig and I only adjusted the framing for the large refractor after the flip). I think it was a fortunate move since it allowed me to catch a lot of dark nebulosity above and to the left of NGC 1499 and a cute little nebula called NGC1579. Taken from my garden obsy on the Swedish countryside in Värmland on 21 Dec 2017. Temperature was ca -4°C and SQM 20.9. Camera: Canon EOS 60D (unmodded) at ISO1600. Lens: Samyang 135mm f/2 (@f/2) Mount: SW EQ8 Guiding: SW ST80 + QHY5LIIM + PHD2 Exposures: 192 x 1min = 3.2 hours (No flats, bias or darks but this is taken with an APS-C sensor on a lens intended for full frame DSLRs so no vignetting that Gradient Exterminator could not easily handle and the outside temperature of -4°C kept the noise very low) Filters: None Stacked: PI Processed: PS CS5 Cheers, Göran
  19. So I was looking at having a go at NGC1499 with an unmodded D5300. After having a quick look, is it even worth it? I've had a try anyway and I'm currently running an 8 minute stack under light polluted skies. Preparing myself for some disappointment here. Can I get away with just adding more data under better conditions? Because I was shooting at 70mm on a standard tripod my exposure times are somewhat restricted. If there's anything at all from this stack I'll post it up but I'm not holding my breath
  20. We've had a couple of clear nights down here in Devon so I've been out with the cameras... this is a 10 sub stack, each of 200 seconds covering NGC1499, the California Nebula. Captured with a modded Canon 650D through a Borg 55 f/3.6 scope. A nice object to do at this time of year whilst waiting for other stuff to rise James
