  1. Hello everyone, I just found a second hand NEQ6-Pro, in good conditions (with transport bags etc), paired with a Meade SCT 200 EMC (the old version). The price is interesting but I don't know if the Meade will be good for AP, I will sell it if not. My main concern is about the tracker. Is it any good for AP? I own at the moment a SW 72ED, and will probably upgrade one day for something a little better in terms of IQ, but I know I will not go for really heavy stuff, the payload probably wont be an issue for the NEQ6-Pro. So what are your thoughts about the mount in terms of AP? Thank you PS: heavy duty mounts such as the HEQ-5, EQ6 etc. are really difficult to find in second hand at the moment (and I'm on a budget).

  10. Hi guys, I bought NEQ6 (second hand) almost a year ago... Unfortunately, the seller has not told me that Mount has a damaged Altitude adjustment thread, so my T - bolt fell off after a month or two... I tried used THREAD TAP REPAIR CUTTER KIT M10 x 1.25 and it worked till today While placing new Thread, I noticed that SW Mount metal is not very tough, however, the new thread was quite good. Today, I tried to adjust my scope in the new place and the Altitude Adjustment bold simply fell off... Fortunately, I managed to catch my rig, otherwise, I presume, my whole set up could end up on the ground... "LUCKY!!!!". Is there any fast way to fix it up? I planned to attend astrocamp on the 5th of October for the first time... I guess I need to buy a larger Bolt and re-thread the mount, but metal is sooo soft... I afraid to do it again ;( Any advice will help... .... ....

Hi Guys/Girls I had a chance to get out in the garden last evening, had a go at capturing NGC 7023 - Iris Nebula, only managed to get 12 good shots, 240sec x 12, combined in Photoshop with Mean Stacking. The dew was super heavy and currently I do not have any dew heaters (next purchase) so lost the battle after around 2 hours. One interesting point is I captured these shots with the long exposure noise reduction switched on with the Sony A7Rii, so each shot took 8 mins to take and save, but as a result the noise levels were next to zero at 800 ISO, and at the end of the day the noise is always our enemy. I need to try a real pro level 'cooled' astro camera just to see how much better it could be, as the Sony A7Rii is just stellar ! I am very happy with the final shot, taken with my Skywatcher 100 ED Pro Esprit Scope on my NEQ6 mount, Skywatcher ED50 Guide Scope and Altair Astro ASI130mm camera, PHD2 of course. The sky was nice and clear with low light pollution, as around 5 miles from major town. I do not take darks or flats or use Deep Sky Stacker, and I do not use filters, plus the camera has not been modified, so I am always delighted with the results I get from my set-up, as I have a deep level of respect for the hard work that most Astrophotographers go through to get the incredible images that we see here in Stargazers. I have read that some people believe that the Sony Alpha cameras have a tendency to 'eat the stars' and not show everything captured, to be honest, I always used a Canon 60Da for many years for my astrophotography, until one day I though, what if my Sony A7Rii could be used, the first time I did this I released that it was time to sell the Canon 60Da, the 'Remote' (free) Sony software is almost as good as BackYardEOS, but the cameras are a decade apart in performance, the noise levels on the Sony are at least 4 maybe even 5 stops better than the Canon, that is the Sony A7Rii at 3200 iso equal to the Canon 60Da at 200 iso, so at 800 iso it is just so impressive. As you can see from the picture only 12 frames, stacked in Photoshop (Mean). Open to comments and welcome a discussion/debate, thanks Jamie
  12. Hi, I've just returned from a partially successful holiday trip with my telescope. Had all sorts of tech trouble but one of them was something new to me. I had my tripod and NEQ6 Pro outside for 6 days to avoid having to level it up and do polar alignment over and over again. I had to take the telescope off a couple of times as there were some wet days and my cover is not big enough to cover everything. Anyway, on the last night clear enough to do any imaging I encountered an issue that I haven't had before. The moisture in the air probably had condensed inside my NEQ6 and eventually froze when the temperature reached 0-1C and rendered the DEC axis unusable. It sounded "crunchy", skipped steps and was generally pretty nasty so I called it quits and took the whole thing back inside. Next day when it had warmed and dried up I tried it again and it worked just fine. I don't think there's any permanent damage to the drive mechanism but what I would like to know if you have encountered anything similar and how are you preventing it from happening again? Is it just generally not a good idea to leave the mount outside like this?
  13. Hi Guys, Long story short, - which one to buy for my NEQ6 mount? Now the long story: I am quite a beginner in this field and I saw quite a few similar posts... the main question is which one to take? 130PDS or 150PDS for AP. As I found out, 90% comments suggest going for 130PDS, as the main disadvantages of 150PDS are: it is a larger sail to catch the wind and it has a smaller field of view... But, I have managed to get a second-hand NEQ6, (not EQ5 or even EQ3 like most of the posts are about), and planning to plant a pillar for it in my garden, and usually, it's not windy in my place. As per field of view, My garden faces South, from South London, so of course, I will re-start with Orion and Andromeda in Autumn. And it looks like only Andromeda will not fit in on my Canon 1300D sensor in full and I am sure the rest objects are smaller than M31 So I am willing to go for 150PDS, However, most of the posts are advising for 130PDS... and it's confusing me at the moment... P.S. I do have 10" DOB for around 18 months, Light pollution hasn't allowed me to see Andromeda through it properly, so I have attached my Canon to it and WOW! This is how this 10" toy hooked me up on AP... and after 10", - I afraid 130PDS will be a bit too small in aperture for my back garden.
  14. Hi, A few years back, I acquired an NEQ6 Pro mount. Recently, during moving from one place to another, I managed to lose the power adapter that comes with NEQ6. If some of you guys own an NEQ6, can you please post close-up pictures of the adapter and its specifications so I can order it online? Also, if someone can post a link of the power adapter itself available from any online site, I would be very grateful. Asim
  15. Can't see that this has been posted before, but apologies if it has. Spent yesterday morning watching a series of 15 videos (about 2¼ hours in total) on the Rowan Belt mod for the NEQ6. Every detail demonstrated and explained. Made me feel that even a DIY-clutz like me could give it a go ... almost!
  16. Hi, I recently fitted the rowan belt mod to my NEQ6 but the guiding (with PHD2) is worse than pre-modification. The PHD2 graph is all over the place. I've checked my polar alignment and balanced everything. I'm pretty happy with the mod as the mount now moves silently on both axis and there is virtually no backlash in either axis. I think the guiding is down my poor tuning of the RA & DEC axis grub screws but am not sure. Do I need to alter the PHD2 settings? Could the worm gear be too tight on the main cogs? Do I need to tighten/loosen the belt motors? Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys, following on from my last thread regarding drift alignment issues, I finally (after a year and a half of trying) managed to get what seemed to be precise polar alignment using the drift method. The goal of this is to get long(ish) unguided subs. My setup is a Skywatcher NEQ6, SW 80ED Refractor, Canon 100D DSLR and i'm using BackyardEOS to control the camera. I don't yet have a focal reducer or any form of autoguiding. Here is an image of my altitude alignment (using the D.A.R.V method), using a star at around ±10° dec from the celestial equator, as near to the east horizon as possible. (Apologies for the poor image quality - I had to use my phone camera since print screen didn't seem to want to work on the laptop). And here is my alignment for the azimuth (taken near the meridian at ~0° dec). I spent hours trying to get both as precise as possible - I think more precise alignment would have been next to impossible for me to do. Regardless, after finally feeling like i'd got good alignment, I went to take an image and I was pretty disheartened. A 30 second exposure left me with significant star trails. The longest subs I could get without trails were ~15 seconds. After nearly a year and a half of just trying to get good polar alignment, it feels like a bit of an insult, especially given that people often talk about getting 30-60 second unguided subs. But, i'm determined to eventually get there. So my question is, why is this happening? Could it be that my mount is flawed or damaged from the time I dropped it on my head? Do I just not have enough practice making the small adjustments to the mount required for unguided subs? Could balancing play into this? I've tried to balance my mount as best I can, but the dec axis is still heavily skewed towards the back/camera end of the scope and i'm unable to move the scope any further forward on the dovetail to counter this. Or could this be that i've simply hit the limit of my setup? I was always intending on buying an autoguider once I was familiar with my equipment and able to get good polar alignment, but would it be worth it? I'm a bit worried that if I can't get better alignment, an autoguider really isn't going to make much difference (and at best give me bad field rotation). Alternatively, are there any other methods of polar alignment I could use? I don't really want to use the polar scope method, and would prefer drift alignment if possible. I'm aware that pHd has a drift alignment procedure, and i'm tempted to try it if I do end up getting an auto guider. Any help or discussion is much appreciated! Cheers, Crowmium.
  18. I've searched a few forums looking for help on this subject and wasn't able to find anything - so I'm posting here in the hope that it helps others. With the help of the Simulation Ciriculum Corp I've been able to connect Starry Night Pro 7 to my NEQ6 SynScan mount. I believe the process will be the same for earlier versions of SN7 that support telescope control. Here's how I did it First - you'll need to ensure you have all the required ASCOM drivers and ASCOM itself installed before attempting to connect to your the mount (not discussed in detail here). 1. Download the SkyWatcher driver here: http://ascom-standards.org/Downloads/ScopeDrivers.htm#synta or here http://download.ascom-standards.org/drivers/SkyWatcher(6.0.6262)Setup.exe 2. Connect your mount to your laptop via the SynScan hand controller (detailed process not discussed here) and go to Control Panel to see which port it's connected to - make a note of the number. NOTE: Do NOT put your hand controller into "PC Direct Mode" (as you would with EQMod etc.) - this will prevent connection to SN7 3. Search for "Telescope Control" in Starry Night Pro 7 > under Setup click Congifure > select the SkyWatcher driver from the drop down list (ddl) > click Properties > select the port number noted above > complete the remaining fields in the properties window and click OK. 4. Finally, click Connect The big thing to remember here is to NOT put the hand controller into "PC Direct Mode" I'm still testing this configuration, for instance, I need to update my hand controller to ensure I get full functionality out of SN7 as the SkyWatcher driver is built for the latest version of SynScan.   19. Hello, Bought and received my Skywatcher NEQ6 Pro mount yesterday along with a Skywatcher 12v 17ah power supply. This is my first goto mount (had a non computerised EQ5 previously). We've updated the firmware, balanced the scope and tried playing around with the slewing on the hand controller. The mount will only slew in certain directions and not in others dependant on the starting orientation of the telescope. Declination seems to be the biggest culprit. Also is it supposed to sound so loud when it slews/doesn't slew? Any advice would be appreciated, we are out of ideas about how to get it to work or what we could try. Thank you! Simona
  20. Hi all, Just wondering if anyone could help me out with a bit of weirdness that was happening last night as i was trying to polar align my NEQ6 mount. I'm using the drift alignment method found here with an exposure time of 125 seconds - 5 seconds where the mount is still in order to 'burn in' a starting point, 60 seconds slewing 'left' and then 60 seconds slewing 'right'. Often, the resulting image wouldn't be in straight lines, but rather lines with kinks in them - the image attached should help give a clearer image of what I mean. This happened when i was aligning both the azimuth and altitude axes. Does anyone have any idea what might cause this? Could it be mount damage or am I just not holding down the directional keys on my keypad properly? Many thanks!
  21. Have you noticed that SkyWatcher has recently downgraded the payload capacity of the HEQ5 and EQ6/NEQ6? They've been around for over a decade and the HEQ5 has always been listed as a "15kg visual payload" mount (which from my experience seems accurate if I compare it with payloads of Celestrons, iOptrons etc - everybody exaggerates a little, especially for "visual"), while the EQ6 was usually listed as "18kg imaging / 25kg visual". When the AZ-EQ5 and AZ-EQ6 were introduced, they were listed at the same capacities as the HEQ5 and EQ6 respectively. A while ago I had compiled a neat little comparison table and charts for the various goto mounts on the market and I was surprised that someone commented recently that I was favoring Skywatcher mounts by listing them higher than their rated capacity. I opened the skywatcher website to discover that their HEQ5 is now listed at 13.7kg, the EQ6 at 18.2kg, while the AZ-EQ5 is still at 15kg and the AZ-EQ6 at 20kg. As far as I know, the old mounts were not changed, so the only possible explanation I can give is that the SkyWatcher marketing dept. had a hand in this, wanting to give some extra reason for people to shell out more for the newer mounts - justify the increased cost in any case, and as the new AZ's can't actually take heavier loads than the old mounts, they simply had to downgrade the latter. Which is a bit ridiculous, the HEQ5 is now rated less than the Celestron Advanced VX and the iOptron iEQ30, which would be pretty disappointing for the 10kg mount head if it was true. Thoughts? I didn't see it discussed in another thread, but sorry if I missed it.
  22. Hi, So I brought a SW 8" reflector and an NEQ6 Pro mount a while ago and just started playing with it. I am pretty much a novice with the equipment right now but trying to learn, so please be patient with me. =) Unfortunately, I have lost the original adapter that came with the mount. =(. I brought a 12V adapter from the local store to replace it and get my mount to work again. It powers up the mount just fine. I can use the SynScan handset to slew around the sky at up to 9x speeds just fine. But when I try doing the star alignment procedure, I run into hardware problems. =(. What happens is as follows: 1. I power on the mount, enter the location coordinates, date and time. 2. The handset prompts me to perform a 1/2/3 star alignment, I select either one of them. 3. The handset offers me to select a star from the list. I select either star. 4. The mount begins to slew... And hardly 2 seconds later, I hear an audible click coming from probably the gears within the mount. At this point, the power LED goes out, starts blinking again, and the handset shows the prompt "Use dir. keys to center object". I can see that the star is nowhere close to the FOV. After this point, the mount completely stops slewing. Whether I select the next star or quit alignment and try slewing manually at any rate, the mount doesnt move at all. I cant hear any slewing sounds from within the mount. 5. I power off the mount. 6. I power it back on. After a few seconds, I hear two quick clicks and then the slow continuous slewing sound starts. Slewing works as before until I try doing an alignment, at which point the same problem as above re-appears and the mount stops working till I power it off and back on. I have tried setting the mount to the HOME position (pointing roughly towards Polaris). I have tried starting from an arbitrary position. But no luck with alignment. I think that either my mount is faulty (I had kept it in storage for about a year). Or the adapter I am using is not giving enough power to the mount during the alignment slewing. I don't have a clear idea though, as slewing works just fine at any speed as long as I havent run the alignment procedure from the handset. Please help me figure out the problem and resolve it. I spent a fortune saving up for the mount and I dread it going to waste. I wasnt able to take excellent care of it earlier (we shifted home and you might imagine how easy it is to neglect "less important" stuff) =(. But I would love to make it work now and re-start what has been my life's passion for more than a decade. =( Asim
  23. They say it never rains, but it pours. Certainly seems to be the case with my NEQ6 recently. When I set up the mount last night, I found the "Dec Lock Lever" (#16 on the attached diagram) has completely seized. Cannot shift it in either direction, despite attacking it with as much force/pressure as I felt comfortable doing, considering it is just a piece of plastic and breaking it would not improve the situation any. Had it out again today in the cold light of day, but to no avail. So my first question would be: has anyone else had this problem and (possibly more importantly) found a solution to it? In the absence of that, I have been giving some thoughts to what it will mean. Firstly the good news: (1) It has seized in the position in which it is stored (with the bolts "below") so at least I can keep it in its box without major alterations. (2) It was fine last night, as I was using the camera, which fits lengthwise on a dovetail bar, so when it was fitted in that position, the camera was pointing north - the usual "home" position. BUT: When I put one of the scopes on it, the scope will be facing west in the "home" position. OK, so when I first "unpark" it, the mount will think it is pointing north and so the initial GOTO alignment of the scope will have the mount pointing it roughtly 90° away from where it needs to be. I can then move the mount using the EQMOD controls so that it is pointing where I want it to and then do my first sync. Once that has happened, presumably it will continue based on that position and every other GOTO of the evening will work out fine. But what will happen at the end of the evening when I "Park to home". Will it go back to pointing west (which will mean the mount will fit in its box), or will it adjust where it thinks home is based on the syncs I have performed during the evening and so point north (which will mean the mount will not fit in its box)? Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Been a very long while since I got the Big One out - NEQ6 with 8SE OTA (it never agrees with my back even though I am in good health), been using my CG4 with the reflector or refractor due to laziness. I have been wondering for a long time about a large reflector to put on the NEQ6, perhaps that would be better than the 8SE? So many scopes to buy and try, never enough money! So tonight was mostly about brushing up on how to use this setup again, have to say in that regard it went well, appears that I left everything in good working order. I did manage to see a few night sky objects - a pretty double star, a few clusters, and random areas of starfields. The dreaded dew began to form on some of my glass surfaces including the eyepiece, no trouble for my dew heater tapes! I have a small one just for the eyepiece, on it went and about five minutes later the dew was gone, magic! It was a real pleasure to see this part of the setup actually working as it should, just unlucky that both finders didn't have the luxury of a heater tape for their eyepiece sides (8x40 finder has one on the objective, that remained dew-free). I was also very happy that I managed to use the red dot finder and 8x40 straight-through uncorrected finder to locate a few targets, even if one of them eluded me (a galaxy, well it was quite bright out there with the 2/3 moon), I always had trouble with them in the past, perhaps my skill level has risen since then. A large wispy blanket of cloud began stretching across the sky signalling that it was time to call it a night. What has become obvious is that the 8SE is a different beast entirely to my refractor or reflector, both of which are closer to one another in terms of eyepiece range and capability, I was only able to use my 25mm and 10mm (though this was rather fuzzy) in the 8SE; I may need to be much more selective of which targets I choose for the 8SE and have them all planned out ready for the next opportunity to use it. The refractor and reflector seem happy to observe almost anything under most sky conditions which is probably why I have been using them a lot more. Shame I missed the best of Saturn, just didn't seem to get that clear sky window when I was able to observe.
