I just finished to work on the data of 2 weeks ago. The animation represent a close up portion of the Sun of 4 May. Images taken with a 100 ed refractor using a Daystar h-alpha filter at a focal of 2200mm, I reduced the focal do to a terrible seeing. I decided to follow for a couple of hours the NOAA 1734 zone, the bigger one of the week with the hope to catch a big X flares like the yeasterday one. Even if the seeing and the video compression had blured alot of details, the filaments and spicules movements are evident, also a couple of mini flares are visible during the time-lapse. Hope in bigger one next time. The mosaic instead was captured the last weekend at the same focal of 2200, 6 images at different exposure for disc and proms (click on it for the zoom). I also captured a serie of movies to assemble a time-lapse of the prominence, but still on working.
Dear SGL. Your opinion is required please. We are very lucky and live in Southern Central France with stunning dark skies. When we get time we look up at the wonders of the night sky. Last night we set up our sunbeds and after a bit of bat watching we settled back to a couple of bottles of red and some cheese. We saw a few shooting stars the milky way as bright as ever, 2 iridium flares as predicted by ISS tracker and lots of air traffic. But we saw those strange flashes again! On several occasions in the past my GF has spotted very brief flashing lights, sometimes 2 in the same place. I poo pooed her until I saw them to. Then I was the one who was poo pooed! Sometimes these flashes are in different parts of the sky but we have confirmed today they all lie at around the same angle and mainly in the eastern to southeastern sky. We do not currently have a great view south so have not noticed them there. So a more detailed description of these flashes: They are brief - less than half a sec. Bright - brighter than any star in the vicinity. They do not seem to be associated with and moving object - satellite/plane. They are sporadic - sometimes you will see 2 or 3 in an evening, sometimes 1. Sometimes you will see 2 flashes in exactly the same spot seconds or a few mins apart. From reading the forums here I get the impression we are witnessing Geostationary satellite Flares but I can't be sure? How often do those distant objects use their thrusters? How bright is hydrazine? Should we be able to see them? As all the sightings tend to be in the same area it sort of points to that but I really don't know. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
An other week is past and the Sun has been more quiet then in the first video but I found few beautifull events I hope you will like. Three linked flares, a persistent tornado, few explosion and huge prominence and filaments liftoff.
Also this weekend has been cloudy/stormy so I cannot use my telescope (again); I decided to make a short clip of the best solar events of the week as seen by the solar international space mission, in the rush I forget a couple but I hope you like it. I only managed to capture the first two events with my elescope.
After months of delay due to a very bad weather and work issues, I was able to use my new open telescope to image the Sun. In reality the conditions were not good , I think seeing about 2 , but the combination of clear skies , holidays and a solar show was an opportunity too good . I then prepared the refractor and pointed our beloved star to capture a giant prominence that I spotted online. Mindful of the first test I mounted the extensions to get the minimum focal lenght (2.5m) , the turbulence was evident. I captured and followed that titan for quite time in different positions waiting for the moment that seeig seemed more quiet, then I found realize that on the right a little active zone appeared erupting plasma; there were the classical loops after particularly energetic flares. I decided so , at the expense of poor seeing , to devote myself to a short timelapse with the Sun even lower in the sky; you can see the result from adverse conditions but it remains a memory of this event particularly rare for me. Before close the session I also tried the loop at full focal (5m) just for fun. Although not perfect , I'm glad to see the first results with the new refractor , I hope to have more sunny weekend in the near future , unfortunately the remaining holidays was cloudy and I am given to processing.
