Hello fellow gazers... I started shooting this one back on Feb 20, when i grabbed 11 x 1200s of Ha subs. 4 of the 11 were not of great quality, due to some light intermittent clouds, but i included them anyway in the stack (such is the trust i place in APP's 'Quality' algorithm). Then on March 3 i finally got another clear night, so while i waited for the sports facilities floodlights to switch off, i grabbed a short set of 20 x 90s RGB subs (just the D5300 with no filter) so i could use them for RGB stars. Then afterwards managed to grab 12 x 1200s of OIII subs. It's been a busy month (house move coming up) so i've only just got around to looking at it now. Processing this one has been a challenge. I wanted to push it hard, to show up some of the nebulosity that sits between the two nebulae, which meant the sky background became an utter pain to deal with. It was noisier than i would like, and still is, hence the need to use more noise reduction than i would normally. Having the stars in a separate layer is great, makes processing so much simpler. It has also improved my workflow i think, as i now tend to end up with an image that has 3 layers, Luminance, Colour, and Stars, rather than a single layer (which i sometimes would, due to laziness!). So now it's easier to go back and fix something later if i decide i don't like it. Full details: 11 x 1200s Ha (2" Baader mounted) 12 x 1200s OIII (2" Baader mounted) 20 x 90s RGB (for stars only) Nikon D5300 (modded) SW 80ED w FF/FR HEQ5-Pro Captured with SGP, pre-processed in APP, post-processed in PS. Ha assigned to Red, OIII to Blue, and Green was synthesized using one of Noel Carboni's actions in PS. I probably spent a good 10 hrs processing this one. Mostly due to trying to create a starless Ha image that was as clean as possible (which was a major PITA i must say!). Also, while the OIII signal was stronger than i was expecting for the tadpole nebula, it was unbelievably weak in the Flaming Star nebula. All i could get, after extreme stretching, was a small blob around the central section, so i gave up on the idea of using Annie's 'Hubble Palette Creation' Action and just went with a Bi-Colour approach. I might try the Hubble Palette just on the tadpoles at a later date, it should take to it much better. This one felt like a struggle, so i'd be grateful for any C&C, no matter how harsh. I think i have a tendency to go 'too far' in my processing, and i might well have done so here. Let me know what you think! Cheers!
The last clear night we had I did my first test with the unmodded Canon 7D MK2. 16x2minutes Canon 7DMK2 EF 70-200mm IS II @ 200mm ISO1600. This was imaging West into fierce LP and final image was quite noisey, must do more or longer subs. What I was hoping to do was pick out the orange/brown dust in this region, quite pleased it seems to got quite a bit. Thanks for looking
Hi folks, Another reprocess of old data (from last December) to see if my skills have improved. Here's one which includes the Flaming Star nebula, rather deeper than my previous effort: Flaming Star - includes M36, M37, M38, IC 405, IC 410 and IC 417 The full sized 4096 pixel square version is available here (6 MB download) - beware, horrors may await the avid pixel peeper! The challenges for this one were to separate out the faint Ha from some residual sensor noise and to decide how many stars were enough - there were a lot more in the RGB subs. At the image scale offered by the 165mm focal length lens the reflection nebulosity was difficult to extract. I decided where it was by doing a blink comparison of the 1000 second blue stack with the full RGB image (the version with all the stars plus some nebulosity) and then it was a matter of isolating it from the bright stars that were illuminating it. It was added to the Photoshop stack of Ha (no stars) plus RGB (just stars) and the final challenge was deciding how strongly to show it - the reflection nebulosity should certainly be weaker but then it risks geting lost in the artificially strong Ha signal. Something that I didn't find in the original processing of the data last year is the "sugar cage" just creeping in at the bottom of the image at about six-thirty. Has anyone got a shot of the full object? Bob. I got back yesterday from AstroFest and,what do you know, it was clear outside! Just had to go with what was set up at the time: Quattro 8" with Coma Corrector Avalon M-Uno Atik 460EX ZWO OAG (first real time I've used an OAG) with SX Ultrastar Baader 7nm Ha The OAG proved easy enough to use with decent star images, and I wanted to try it quickly on a number of targets. So here we have: M1, 12x5 minutes (oops, forgot to dither) Horsehead and Flame , 4x5 minutes (ditto) Flaming Star, 6x5 minutes, to continue the flame theme (did remember to set up dithering in Nebulosity) ...all with no cropping, so same FOV. Certainly not the greatest of pictures, and only very quick processing, but I hope not too bad for such short exposures in Ha. I'm really starting to think that I prefer just mono or RGB because it all happens so much more quickly (and it went down to -2C last night here... OK, not Pyeongchan, but quite chilly enough.) Hi Everyone, With the weather as it is I guess anything is better than nothing. This is 100 mins of Ha and OIII; Ha was taken pre-flip, OIII taken post flip. Subs are pre-processed in PI (Flats but using MasterBias as Dark), stretched in FITS Liberator (a first for me so not sure I've used it to best effect) and then combined using Ha-OIII Bi-Colour Process in Annie's Astro Actions in PS; there is no noise reduction at all. I clearly need several hundred more minutes of Ha and OIII and a bit of SII might be helpful as well! Thanks for looking and any comments or suggestions would be gratefully received. Adrian
I think I'm done with the Hydrogen layer for these nebulae. I started 3 weeks ago a 4 panel mosaic with the 130PDS. I shot around 2h on each panel in 180s subs at 300 gain. And recently I thought to lower the noise in the darker areas and I shot another 7h with the Canon 300 F4 L and I combined the dark areas. I see now that I should have taken more frames with the scope as the quality of the image taken through the lens is way lower. Anyway, I still combined them a bit. The plan is to add LRGB too in the future and perhaps some O3 as well.
