  1. Finally got some fairly clear skies last weekend (2015-01-17), although it was a bit hazy, so I thought I'd try to image comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy. Set up my Sony A77 with a Tamron 90mm macro lens and iOptron Skytracker V2 on a sturdy tripod. Spent quite some time to try to get polar alignement and focus as good as possible and then get comet Lovejoy and the Pleiades in frame. Got 46 images (45 sec exposures) of which, perhaps half of them were somewhat usable. My astro image processing skills leaves a lot to be desired. I stuggle to get my head around DSS and then how to fix the problem with light pollution in my images and get as much detail as possible from the data I've collected. The result is not great, but it's a start and I've got lots and lots to learn. First attempt, 5 x 45 sec lights, 5 darks @ ISO 400, 90mm, f/4.0:
  2. After what seemed like a very long period of cloudy weather myself and a few others from the local astronomy group decided to take advantage of the forecast clear skies and spend a night under the stars on the 13th/14th. Despite the bright moonlight there were plenty of bright Geminid meteors on show. Unfortunately I didn't catch any of the really bright ones with the camera..... The aurora was a nice bonus though. Later in the night after the moon had set there was a short period of darkness enabling fainter objects to be imaged.... A quick shot of M51 was obtained before targeting Comet Lovejoy.... A fine end to a thoroughly enjoyable night under the stars.
  3. Here it is again, my space video of Comet Lovejoy, with additional processing to bring out the color, and a new original music soundtrack that I composed for the comet. I used the Orion Starshoot Deep Space Video Camera II to capture the image through an Orion StarMax 127 Mak-Cass. Enjoy! Reggie

  6. A short time-lapse of the comet C/2014 Q2 travelling through a patch of London sky on 10th January 2014. The five second clip shows just under an hour of real time movement. - 82 x 20 second exposures at 3200 ISO (one shot every 40 seconds). Playback is at 15 frames per second. Sorry about the gif quality, I don't know if it's possible to show higher quality video here
  7. I have been looking forward to the latest comet Lovejoy since I heard about it and I have so far had a couple of chances to image it. The first was on 28December when I used my SW150P from a dark(ish) site and last night I tried a couple of wide field attempts with my Canon 1100D on a tripod from my town garden. I processed the shots with DSS and PS. I really hope the weather is kind and we get some more great opportunities once this visitor gets higher up in the southern skies and the moon moves out of the way. https://www.flickr.com/photos/116958085@N07/15952462129/
