  1. It's time I thinned out my collection and as such are prepared to let my beautiful refurbed 150 F/8 Frac... 'The Big White One' This beauty is fitted with a dual focuser and has been a wonderful ornament in my gym since I obtained her so is desperate for an airing... It's collection only from South Birmingham I'm afraid because I don't trust the post to care for her like I have... I'm going to let her go for £250 no offers I'm afraid as these beauties don't come up for sale very often! and it really is a lovely instrument! It doesn't come with a finder scope (or the AVX mount in the photo) but the diagonal is included.
  2. Hello, I have been wanting to get into Astronomy for quite a while now, and I need some advice for buying a telescope. I want something that I can look at nebula's(my personal favorite thing to look at), as well as planets, at a high resolution. I also need something that is decently portable, something that could easily fit into a truck. Do you have any suggestions for a good high resolution telescope? P.S. Sorry if I say anything stupid, kind of new to this.
  3. Hey guys I'm an aspiring beginner astronomer and observer, and I recently inherited my grandfather's old telescope. It is a Meade Quartz with the LX Pulse drive. Only one problem, he left me with no instructions. I learned about the Barlow lens, and how it magnifies the normal eyepiece, the only problem is I have no idea how to attach it. The hole where I normally fit an eyepiece is far too large for it to fit. The size of the hole can fit a 26mm lens. Is it because I have brands mixing and it can only fit a Meade Barlow? I appreciate the help.
  4. I have acquired an old 1960s Newtonian telescope which I am reconditioning as part of my STEM Ambassador volunteer work with a school in Bury St Edmunds. It's currently I my garden but when it's in a fit enough state it will move to the school grounds and hopefully be the seed of a new Astronomy Club in the area. I've already started doing after-school solar system and rocket making/launching sessions, so hopefully the scope will grow the club into something accessible to many children in the area. The reason for the post is I'd like to discover more about the provenance of the scope, so I wondered if any SGL members would be able to help? The primary mirror is 300mm diameter, the secondary elliptical mirror is 63mm (minor dia) by 90mm (major dia). Estimated focal length 1560mm, so f/5.2-ish. The tube is 1.6metres from the back of the primary box to the front of the tube; the front tube is 390mm diameter. It stands on a massive concrete block, angled at 52 degrees, which takes 4 men to lift... So far I have stripped it down, cleaned the bearings and regreased them so it is useable. I successfully collimated it with a Cheshire - first light showed not much coma, so happy with that for now. The focuser is rather tired and it needs at least a RA drive to make it easy to use, and the primary needs recoating. I believe it originally came from Norwich Uni, but I have no details. If anyone recognises this magnificent instrument or knows anything about it, please let me know - it'd be great to share this with the school as excitement mounts!   5. Hi guys, Been in to Astronomy / Astrophotography for a good deal of my life. That said with life generally getting in the way with ups and downs, I now find myself in a position where i can really start to get into Astronomy again. What i was querying is that i have a red dot view finder on my Meade Polaris 130MD, What i was wondering is in the images i have uploaded i have a 20-60x60 spotters scope, Can anybody give me some of your advice and wisdom as to how i could use or if possible utilise it on the ring behind my viewfinder, i ask as i have no battery and like a numpty i left it on to die, Forgot to also mention that i use the scope on a EQ2 mount if that helps, I like to try and get some shots of the moon with my D5300, it does enough for what I'm happy with.   7. Hi I have a Sky-Watcher telescope, model AC 120/600 Startravel BD AZ-3 that I want to use to take photographies. This one: http://www.astroshop.eu/skywatcher-telescope-ac-120-600-startravel-bd-az-3/p,16710 I have an "old"(2009 model) Nikon D3100 camera and a t-ring, but the thing is that my camera won't read the t-ring. I read online that it's too old to be compatible with a t-ring. So I wondered if anyone knows about any camera models I can use? I'm thinking about getting a new camera because of this and I would like some recommendations. Which cameras do you know are able to "read" a t-ring? I would prefer the cheapest models Thank you for your time
  8. Hello Everyone, My name is Forest Fernandez. I am a hobbyist Photographer that just started getting interested in Astrophotography. I started last year in 2016 with my current set up, a Canon 5D Mk3 w/ a Rokinon 24mm on Tripod with a shutter release. In my about me section you can go to my facebook where i have some of my photographs that i've taken. I will try to include some of them in this post as well. I went out every night last summer to take photos, really diving in to try to learn as much as i could. I fell in love! I am now interested in buying a Telescope that i can adapt my Canon 5D Mk3 to. Ideally: I'm looking for a telescope that will allow me to photograph Nebulae specifically. Galaxies would be great, but i know that only one or two are visible to beginner to intermediate telescopes. So far this is what i've learned that i need from researching telescopes: LARGE Aperture, more light i can pick up the better. Telescope that can pick up low light objects in the sky, i.e. Nebulae. Equatorial Mount, for the Photography element. Dobsinian i've been told is the way to go for low light Nebulae's and such. ADVICE: I am looking for advice from experienced astrophotographers here on the following things: - Any other factors i need to take into consideration to get what i'm looking for. That would be great. - I'd like to be able to make decently sized prints of these photographs, but i know that often times lower budget telescopes don't have great print quality. Any advice? - Telescope suggestions to pair with my Canon 5d Mk3. I have roughly a budget of 3,000$. I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's input. Thanks!
  9. Hi there, I currently have access to a Skywatcher 200p and am loving it although imaging is a bit tricky with it for deep sky objects. However I will be losing access to it later this year. This obviously means I need to reach into my pockets and buy something for myself. My main aim is to photograph the Messier list of objects which means I need some sort of tracking scope setup. My question is which one...? I'm not looking to break the bank so preferably something under £1000 but if that isn't possible then I could go a little bit higher... Portability would be useful but not an absolute must. I currently have a DSLR so that would need to be able to be fitted to it as I can't quite justify buying one of the proper sky cameras at the moment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.   10. I could use some expert advice on purchasing my first telescope for astrophotography. I have been using my Canon 5DMIII and an Astrotrac and have decided to upgrade to a tracking EQ mount and telescope. At first to image with my Canon and later CCD. Currently I am considering three scopes: Sky-Watcher ProED (100mm doublet ED APO 900mm FL (f/9)), Meade Series 6000 (80mm Triplet ED APO 480mm FL (f/6)), Explore Scientific (102mm Triplet ED APO 714mm FL (f/7). Any opinions on which would be best for astrophotography of galaxies and nebula? Are there others that are better that I should consider? I have not selected a mount yet but something like the NEQ6.   11. Hi there, I'd like to get my husband a telescope for his birthday. We're beginners and have a young daughter. We live in Nairobi and go camping a lot and would like something portable that we can take into the bush with us (so fairly robust). I've looked at ratings online and many recommended the Celestron 21035 70mm travel scope, but it got quite mixed reviews. Am less concerned about astrophotography than just looking at the sky. Was also looking at Celestron NexStar 130 but also has a lot of mixed reviews including bad electronics. I'm willing to spend up to $400. Since we live in Kenya, its hard to ship faulty scopes back and forth for repair. Does anyone have any particular recommendations? Want large aperture, robust, portable. Probably refractor. Any recommendations most welcome, thanks.

  13. Hello everyone! I have a Celestron Astromaster 70az. I've been on winter break recently and have got the opportunity to utilize it in the evenings and early mornings. I used it this morning around 4-5 am IST to spot Jupiter, and boy was I overcome by excitement. Since I acquired this scope from my cousins', it's been rather untouched. Perhaps the alignment/collimation is off but I only see a distant white speck. It could be the shortcomings of my telescope but I would rather have you guys correct my understanding on this as I am a novice to astronomy. My main inner debate was whether I should look for extra accessories or purchase a more powerful scope good enough for planetary observation. (Sidenote: I have a 20mm and a 10mm scope that came with this box). Now, I live in the middle of Mumbai which is a bustling city. I realize light pollution and other pollution also factor in greatly. I would like to hear more experienced people out before making hasty decisions. Thank you, -H
  14. So I have recently just gotten the Saxon 200mm reflecting telescope, and with it I received an erecting eyepeice to view terestial objects. Problem is, people are saying to insert into threads and I've tried to do that but it doesn't fit? How do I correctly place the erecting eyepiece onto the telescope? Please help! Images of regular eyepeice for space objects (28mm) and other parts included to help.
  15. I Did IT! I bought my first telescope! A Celestron Nexstar 4SE I am sure that there are a million reasons why I should have bought something else but it's too late now! I am delighted! Bought on E-bay for around 1/2 price I now have the Telescope + 9mm and 25mm eyepieces, a 2x (ken) Barlow, a focal reducer(??) and a T-mount (eyepiece and camera port versions) After a 250 mile round trip to pick it up I pointed it at the moon with the 25mm. Well WOW!! I stuck my DSLR on an took a pic! WOW! (probably not very good to you lot but for me! Wow!) A couple of nights later I set it up again using the Align function and took a tour - saw Mars and Venus, Polaris and a couple of other interesting looking fuzzy things. Of course there is an unimaginable amount to learn, but I am hooked! Cheers MZ

  18. Ok, so my lovely 9 year old son wrote his xmas list and at the top was...a decent beginner level telescope. I did a little homework since the boy has been using a nice set of Celestron binoculars until now, and decided to go for the Inspire mostly due to its phone mount that lets the phone see what the telescope sees for photographing. The question is...whilst I know we should get some pretty lovely views of the moon...does anyone have any idea if there's anything else we may spot? Or if I've even made the right choice for him!   19. Hi there! (Before reading, my English may not be the best, but I hope you'll understand what I mean and say) I'm currently looking for a telescope that will blow my mind (in a weird way). I've been a "fan" of the night sky since I was a little kid, now I'm 21 years old and I want to give the skies a try. So, the telescop I've been thinking about buying is the Sky-Watcher Explorer-150P(EQ3-2) F/750. To me it seems like a decent telescope for a beginner, but I have my questions to those who are experienced with telescopes and those of you who maybe own their own Sky Watcher Expl. 150P. Questions: 1. Is this a good beginners telescope? Please explain why it is, and why it might not be. 2. What will I be able to view with it? 3. Is this a telescope I can use to take pictures? If so, how can this be done? (Using a laptop or a digital camera?...or both?) 4. Is it difficult to take it with you and to operate it? 5. If you could please rate it from 1-5 (for beginners), where would you put it? Those are the questions I have right now, I might come back with more later. I'm hoping for friendly and informative replies that can help me decide. It's already pretty late here in Norway, so I'll be going to bed now, but I hope some of you can answer me within the next few days.   20. Hi everyone, Nice to meet you all this is my first time posting here, im currently looking into buying my first telescope but i am having a lot of trouble choosing which one to buy. Ive veiwed many makes and models such as Celestrons,Orions etc but just cannot choose, as i am a complete beginner i dont really know what to look for and everytime i think i have found a good telescope i delve into reviews from around the web to find they may not be so good. I was wondering if anyone on here could help me out with this please maybe some suggestions? I'm hoping to find a good quality telescope for planetary veiwing and veiwing celestial bodies and also maybe some astrophotography, my budget is around the £400 mark any help will be most appreciated thank you!
  21. Hi guys I am looking to purchase a beginners scope for my Dad’s Christmas present (I’ll be honest it’s also a present for me!) I have done a bit of research online and I thought I had the ideal one to get started. The Celestron Astromaster 130EQ MD (£149 Amazon.co.uk) Until I found this: Skywatcher Explorer-130M 130mm (£193 Amazon.co.uk) I was hoping you guys could enlighten me and let me know what one to get out of these two? Will I be able to view things like long distant moons and Saturn’s rings? Or even a ‘local’ Nebula? Also when looking into the Celestron 130EQ MD I was recommended into purchasing the ‘Celestron 94307 AstroMaster Eye Piece and Accessory Kit’ (£58 Amazon.co.uk) to get a better view. Will I be able to use this eye piece kit with the Skywatcher 130M? As it is getting near Christmas now I will need to buy one very soon. One last thing - Ive seen mixed opinions online about the quality of the mirrors in both scopes. Does the Celestron 130EQ MD have a better scope to the Skywatcher 130M?? Are they spherical or parabolic? What one do you think best for my money?? Thanks in Advance! Rhys

Hi, Bought celestron astromaster 13eq b4 2 days this is my first ever telescope..today for nearly 2 hrs i tried to point to the mars..but i couldn't point..i can see with naked eyes but could not find in telescope..it was very frustrating with eye pain,head pain...can u tell how to locate a star or anything with the s/w..what the numbers are in the eq mount??how to use the s/w and point to that particular object with those numbers??? please help..i saw only moon clearly... Thanks...

Hi all, For the first time in my life i have bought a telescope(celestron astromaster 130eq)..So iam very intrested in seeing my favourite orion nebulae , How can i get a closer image of it like shown in many pictures..Is it possible to see very closer from this telescope and how the color comes? is the color of nebulae is fake or real? What eyepiece can i use to see the distant deepsky objects very close and clearly... Thank u....

Well, I have finally got my head around recording and stacking tonight and since it was a crisp, clear sky and a beautiful Waxing Crescent Moon shining out my window I decided to take my new Neximage Burst put it in my Celestron 114 LCM and headed out to my garden with my all my necessary equipment with me. I followed a great tutorial on how iCap and Registax worked and used these tutorials to record the Moon. When the recording was done I stacked and processed the recording using Registax and when the final outcome came I was shocked how good it looked to me. Maybe to you professional astrophotographers it may look very poor. But for a first timer it isn't that bad right? I am proud of it and hopefully it will be first of many for me! I can't wait till Venus rises up so I can practice on an actual planet. Though I am aware of the way Venus's atmosphere is extremely reflective with the amount of CO2 in in it's atmosphere and nearly every image turns white. But having a timelapse of photos of it's phases would be pretty cool. But before I go onto Venus I am definitely going to practice on the Moon. A budding astronomer moon1 processed.bmp
  25. Hello! I have been looking through the forums sections of this site and found that nichrome wire is a very popular material for dew heaters. I was using my DSLR a several weeks back, and the dew was horrible and it encouraged me to build a nichrome heater. My first heater prototype consisted of 22" of wire with a resistance of 4.08 ohm per foot connected directly into a 12V power supply (consisting of 8 AA batteries in parallel). It was wrapped in duck tape. It worked for a while, but then the batteries began to overheat and I had to pull the heater out to let them cool. When I used the same prototype heater on 6V (4 AA batteries) it didn't have this same overheating issue, but it produced less heat then when it was on 12V. I'm not using a pulse width modulator, but would that solve this issue? I'm worried as the heater is only really around 8 ohm, it may be short circuiting with such little resistance. The wire can't be terribly long as this is just to heat a DSLR lens. Any input on a solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
