  1. Hi, I was asked on a Swedish forum to put an "Astronomical Dictionary" on my homepage. I have made a test page in an easy form. Astronomical related words linked to wikipedia.   2. Finally, Jupiter is back in the night sky! Oh, how I have missed this beautiful gas giant of a planet. As much as I enjoy imaging deep sky objects, my first love will always be planetary imaging. There is just something about imaging our local neighbors that puts me in a wonderful mood. Watching Jupiter rotate throughout the night is a sight to behold, and for such a large planet it does so about every 10 hours as opposed to our 24 hour Earth rotation. This means I can watch the great red spot on Jupiter slide across the surface in a matter of hours, and I can even see the movement of its 4 brighter moons. The black dot you see in the image is a shadow transit of Europa, one of Jupiter's larger moons. P.S.   3. As its supposed to be clear for much of the UK tonight and tomorrow morning I've been trying to plan my nights observing. Top of my list so far are some of the messier objects I've not caught before like M83 which I should just be able to get among the trees on the local horizon. I've also noticed that there is a grazing transit of Ganymede at about 2ish and Mars is pretty close to M75 and in my scopes at least should appear in the same field of view at around 100x. So plenty of choice. Anyone got any others they'll be going for?
  4. Photos taken via my Samsung Galaxy J7 through my Orion f4 scope. The images of Jupiter and its' moons 1,3,and 5 were captured through a 20mm lens. Images 2 and 4 were captured with an Orion Shorty 2x Barlow Lens through a 20mm lens.

Now this has probally bin done and if not i already know why but its just a brainwave Basically you know how the hubble telescope looked at a single patch of sky for 11 days straight and brung back a spectacular image well i was thinking could we do that from earth could we setup a global observation of people all around the globe starring at the same patch of sky and gather all that information together and see what image we could create i mean this is just a idea if anyone could help speculate on this and if its even possible to do somethimg this big again im new to all of this and this idea migh not even be possible but if it is and any1 out there could give insight on just how possible it is then please say or if its a bad idea then just say i wont be disshearted but there you go 8 mean i dont even onow how the information would be put together or gatherd but surely theres a way and if not then ao be it would be amazing if this was possible though
  6. Yesterday i viewed jupiter with my celestron astromaster 130eq telescope with 10mm eyepiece..the planet looked very small but could could see clearly but i want to see enlarged ...what eyepiece can i use.. or my telescope capacity is only this much?
  7. Hello all, Feels like years since I last posted here. To be more precise its 3 months to the day since my last image. Got this one of Saturn last night. Pretty pleased with it given how low the planet is. The moons captured are, left to right, Tethys, Dione and Rhea. Anyone know much about the dark marking in the A ring on the right tip? (sorry if its already been mentioned in other threads) I thought it was an artifact at first but have noticed it in other images. Taken through my 8 inch SCT with a 2x barlow lens and DBK imaging source camera.

Hi all Well my scope has been sitting in my front room since last winter , i have moved to a new area and 2 weeks after moving in they put new street lighting in the street and they are like flood lights so thats the the easy stargazing gone, i went camping on the last bank holiday to selsey with the scope to see why patrick moore loves it down there so much and it was a total wash out and never got to use the scope at all. So im looking forward to winter and the cold nights and getting to see orion, also i miss looking at the planets , is there any good planets this year?. i have also noticed on my skywatcher dob that one of the white rollers that the scope moves up and down on is missing and i need to replace it even though the scope is still useable, has anyone lost one of these before?. looking forward to spending more time on the site again and its changed a whole heap since i was last on it. cheers...rich
  9. I'm really surpised at how few Jupiters there are here... we definitely need one more Here's mine from 3am on the morning of 6th September. Not much to write home about yet but its still low and early days. Quite looking forward to the evening sessions when its up high later this year.   10. I hope computer program grabs are appropriate for this forum. It seemed like the place best suited to these but I wanted to share them. In retrospect there're a couple of layout improvements I could have done with the first two but I'm quite happy with the Sun one. I couldn't make that image any smaller because Ceres already appears only 1px. The Sun image (which is yesterday's Sun actually) was taken from "Helioviewer" which is a very handy website resource.
  11. Hi, After a lot of research I purchased my first advanced telescope a 12inch Orion SkyQuest Open Truss Dobsonian. Being into astronomy for years now this is the first gaint telescope I am using. Today was first light and I was rather confused as to what I was seeing. Comparing my tiny 4inch view of Jupiter with the view from this 12inch; it was nearly similar! So the question is which eyepieces should I use to get better detail? I have a 28mm, 32mm, 15mm, 6mm etc. and a Baader zooming hyperion. I viewed Jupiter from both the telescopes using a 32mm wide angle eyepiece. This is probably a really rookie question so go soft on me Which eyepieces and of which make should I attach to fully utilize the capability of this telescope? I tried the Baader and the 15mm and the 32mm for seeing Jupiter tonight. Any help would be highly HIGHLY appreciated. Clear Skies, Div
  12. I remember when i first heard the planets symphony (in record form, or it may have been cassette), entranced isn't the word, especially Neptune with all the womanly choirs. Just listening to Venus just now, had forgotten how amazing that was, then i played Mercury, then i thjought about what was known in Mr Holst's time about the planets, a quick search tells us he was born in 1874 and died in 1934, but i know notihng about astronomical history so it was interesting to look at what information was available to him as an artist, what did he base Mercury on for instance? In modern times being Mercurial (not that it's used often these days) means that you are a little unreliable, change-with-the-wind, bit of an airhead, stuff like that. When you listen to Mercury it has that kind of flighty cadence! It's all very quick and light and cagey. So i found myself wondering where this characterisation of planets came from, Mars being equated with war, Venus with love etc. I'm roughly versed in Roman history which tells us they took their gods from thje Greeks abd the Greek inheritance is fairly obscure beyond Pelaginas (spelling?). I've just realised it's late here in the UK and i'm rambling coz i've had one too many. Basciically i just love the planets by Holst, especially Neptune.

  14. Gibbous Venus over London. Venus is looking particularly bright at the moment as it is out of the glare of the Sun at this point in its cycle and, unusually for Venus, over the next few months will be visible in the late night sky. This is my second attempt at capturing Venus as usually it isn't visible when I'm out with my scope. The first attempt I made, last year, was completely over exposed and looked terrible so I'm quite pleased with this.

  16. Hi, I am going to buy my first telescope and I can't make up my mind with the focal ratio. I have seen this two option within my budget Skywatcher 130/1000 eq2 with a f/7.7 ratio Meade 130 Polaris EQ with 650 mm focal length and f/5 ratio. I read that a f/7.7 would be better to watch planets while f/5 would be better to watch galaxies and nebulae and will also give a brighter image. As I am new and never looked through a telescope like those I don't know which to choose. The idea of looking at galaxies really excited me but I also wanted to see planets such as Jupiter or Saturn and it's moons, and at the moment I am not considering photography as I still need to get familiar with the telescope but in the future I would love to take some photos so brightness could be important. My question is how much difference would I noticed between these two focal ratio when I looked at planets and galaxies. Would I get a much better view of Saturn with a f/7.7 or not really? Thanks in advance for your advices

Hello, I have recently bought a 76AZ and seen some incredible sites of the Moon, Venus was good to observe too (all through the 20mm) However Mars was a disappointment probably due to its size; and when I attach the Barlow Lense the zoom is there but the quality is definitely compromised. (Also find trouble with focusing as it shakes finding it hard to find the 'sweet spot') I am asking for some advice on how to 'tune up' or get the best out of my 76AZ, and for any advice on what optics/eyepieces to buy as I have read that the standard ones are not the best of quality. The finder scope is also terrible and will probably resort to fitting an Air Rifle scope in its place! Although guess work with two people works reasonably well! I would love gain any valuable Pointers & Tips anyone may have on how to use this telescope to its maximum performance or what things I can do to improve the quality etc. you can also be honest and say I need to just upgrade ha ha Thanks a lot in advance! ?

  20. Saturn seen from London on a clear but windy night. As an experiment this image is made from the best 200 frames taken from each of seven videos at different exposures and stacked in Registax. Post processing was done in Photoshop CS6.

Hi folks, Here's my 2nd attempt at the red one, the 24th looked to be a great evening at the start but high cloud moved in and caused quite poor seeing, this was also my first try of my new Astronomik IR pro 742 filter which really makes a difference. The IR channel is layered at 36% opacity but it really does bring out detail especially in slightly poor visibility. Thanks for looking Taken With SW200p, HEQ5, ASI120MM IR-RGB filter wheel stacked in AS2, Wavlet adjustment in Registax and finished if Photoshop.
  22. Hello everyone! Been a while since I've visited the forum, but just recently taken my first images of Mars, and wanted to share them. It was quite a battle to get these images - I've battled my scope being moved upstairs (construction work at our house), preventing any astronomy, my motor drive running out of battery, my RA axis coming loose, and my parents' laptop crashing, but I have finally got the data! Taken with DMK 21AU618.AS at focal length of 4,000mm, through my Explorer 200P. IrRGB, with about 10,000 subs of which 3,000 stacked, before being edited in PS. There are still some obvious colour errors, which I will try to fix, but for now, I'm quite happy with the result! As usual, any constructive criticism is always welcome! David
  23. Here's The big man from a couple of nights ago, I'm desperate ti get a bit more info out of it but I've started with AS2 and it's pretty good software. Would love to have a go with a 4x or 5x Powermate but could do with some motor driven focusing. Thanks for looking, other stuff is on my flickr site.
