  1. I am going through the motions of properly processing my first narrowband image. Perhaps there is no difference here to LRGB, but I am curious as to which method people favour for their work-flow and why: A: Combine the channels (using SHO palette in my sitution) and then apply DBE; or B: Apply DBE to each channel and then combine? Mainly interested in nebulae. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.
  2. Hi all! I'm about to embark on my first narrowband imaging session tonight. If you're happy to share, I'd be interested to know the one thing you wish you had been told before you started with narrowband, what challenge it caused you and how you overcame that challenge? For some context, I've been imaging LRGB to now so have some general experience. Tonight, I'll be using an ed80 pro refractor with 0.85 reducer, moonlite focuser and motor, OAG, asi185mc guidecam, efw, asi1600mm-c on an azeq6gt. Filters are baader ha 7nm, OIII 8.5nm and Si 8nm, all 1.25". I'll be using sharpcap to polar align and SGP for acquisition. Current expected target is Elephant's Trunk. Thanks all!
  3. Here's my effort from 2 nights ago under an increasingly rare clear and moonless night 1hr each of HA:OIII;SII using a Skywatcher esprit ED80 and ATIK 460 camera.
  4. EQ6-R Pro, ASI1600MM, ED120 + 0.85x reducer, Astronomik 6nm Ha filter. 2 hours integration (30x240s) 50 darks, flats and dark-flats. Windy night, near full moon Captured via SGP, Guiding PHD2, Processed in photoshop. This is why I wanted to get into narrowband imaging, Taken on Sunday night from south Edinburgh (Bortle class 6) with a nearly full moon in the sky (95%) and I can still make the most of the limited opportunities we get here. OIII filter is next on the list.
  5. Hello Astro Peeps, I hope everyone is all good! Isn't there some amazing images on this site and others. Amateur imaging has never been so good! I myself have finally managed to get some data for an image, of which I am very happy. It has been so hot here it has been impossible to get any good data. One day a couple of months ago, I hung the thermometer from the grape vine under the back verandah and it was 47.5°C. Sounds far fetched, although true. I live in Adelaide, South Australia and we are 11km from the CBD and usually 1.5 degrees hotter than there! Anyway, I thought I'd try my hand at a Ha, OIII bi-colour image while waiting for my SII data to come in. There seems to be a halo issue with some of the filters for which I will need to do further testing so I apologise for their distracting nature.   6. Hi everyone! The Tadpole Nebula and the Flaming Star Nebula captured over three nights of the unexpected nice weather we had a couple of weeks ago. A number of firsts with this image: 1. My first mosaic - keeping it simple with two panes! 2. First time I left my imaging rig outside... (I used a telegizmo cover) and it was perfect, allowing me to get imaging very quickly on each night 3. First time using powerful scripting tools in my capture software, APT, to move to the second pane and starting imaging automatically...worked really well! APP was used for pre-processing and stitching the mosaic together, while Pixinsight was used for image processing. A total of 10.9 hours integration time. Full details on Astrobin Thanks for looking!
  7. Hello all, I'm starting a new thread for this since the hydrogen data is rather old and it has been reprocessed since I posted a while ago. Now I finished the acquisition of O[III] too. Or sort of, I planned more, but clear nights were so rare that I decided to process what I had. The image was done in "3 pass" data over the area. That means that I acquired 3 sets of images covering the same area and combined in the end. First 2 in hydrogen, the last in oxygen. First set consisted of 3 panels in portrait mode for the top area and then I wanted to extend them to the bottom so I shot another 2 panels in landscape mode. I knew that I could get a higher SNR so I shot 4 more panels in landscape mode. Each panel consists of 30-31 subs, each sub 300s. Then I started the acquisition of O[III] which needed light pollution and moonlight conditions than the Ha required. Top panels contain 30 subs, but the bottom ones, only 20-22. Each 300s. Luckily there's not much oxygen in that area so I could get away with less subs. I also took some 10s-30s frames for M42's core. For the framing, I created a quick mosaic of the same area. For the final alignment I shot an image somewhere close to the center of this area. I can't remember if the initial register was done in APP or Registar - for the first pass, but for the next ones it was done in Registar. I removed the gradient manually in each stack with APP and then I created the mosaics for each pass same with APP. The 2 Ha passes I then blended manually 50%-50%. For the processing, I tried to stretch both Ha and O[III] to the same levels and I combined them manually in some 60-40/70-30 ratio for a layer which I used as lum. The colours were Ha - reddish, O[III] - cyan-blue. I spent a lot of time trying to control the big stars, the O[III] filter has poor coatings and, together with the ASI1600s non AR coated sensor, I had much brighter reflections than with the Ha filter. And I tried to raise the oxygen levels selectively around the flame and NGC2023, but the flame is really dim in O[III]. Don't know what other details in the story I forgot, this project drained me a lot of energy. Camera was ASI1600MMC, cooled to -15C for the first pass and to -25C for the ones following. Gain 139. Canon 300 F4 L IS lens with a lot of aberrations towards the edges. AZ-EQ5 mount guided with a 200mm lens and an ASI120MM, with varying seeing. 1.5-2.5" RMS guiding error usually. APT for capture, PHD2 for guiding, Registar for each night initial alignment. DSS, APP, Registar, StarTools, GIMP for processing. I started shooting early in October and I wanted much more, but Orion already becomes less and less visible from where I image and hides beyond the house.   8. Hi guys Been busy the last wee while, so haven't done much imaging lately, but i did at least finally get around to processing my Soul Nebula data from a couple of weeks back. So this is 220 mins of Ha, and the same again of OIII, all 20 min subs. With the usual 30 flats and 50 Bias, with aggressive dithering. Shot through a SW 80ED on a HEQ5 Pro mount. Captured in SGP, pre-processed in APP, and post-processed in Photoshop. I used a slightly different method this time. Normally, i stretch the OIII data to the absolute limit, and then combine the stacks in Photoshop, but this time i used APP instead. APP has a nice feature that lets you multiply data, so i basically applied an x5 factor to the OIII data, and then assigned the Ha and OIII to G and B channels respectively (as per the standard SHO model) and then used a blend of 20% Ha and 80% OIII for the Red channel. The resulting RGB image was then imported into Photoshop for everything else. I'm still to decide on whether or not i prefer this method, but i do like how the colours came out with this one. I deliberately left the green alone, rather than take it out, as i think it adds more depth to the image. Although somewhere during my processing i noticed that the image had been converted from 16bit down to 8bit and i didn't realise until it was too late :-( I'm still unsure how that happened exactly, perhaps after running an action, i don't know really. Anyhow, i certainly wasn't for going back to the drawing board so i decided to finish it off all the same. C&C welcome as always guys. Thanks for looking.

Having acquired an ASI 1600MM Pro earlier in the year, this is my first attempt at a wide field Ha/OIII bicolour, using a Borg 55FL scope. 15 x 240s Ha and 15 x 240s OIII, integrated and combined in APP and edited in Star Tools. I assigned Ha to the Red Channel and OIII to Blue and Green, but would be grateful for any tips on combining channels for bi-colour images. I also tried combining with the LRGB Tool in Star Tools, assigning Ha to Red and OIII to Green, allowing STar Tools to synthesise the missing data. The result was interesting, but did not produce the 'traditional' Red/Cyan colours of this target. Apologies, maybe someone can advise how I can insert the image into this post, rather than have it as an attachment please? Cheers Dave

Hey-ho So then, just as i thought the DSO season was well and truly over for me until late August/early September, as it turned out last Saturday night (May 5th) was mostly clear, so i set about trying to finish the NAN image i had captured in Ha a while back (see thread below): So all i needed was some OIII. It's obviously not the ideal time of year to capture this i know, as it's so low on the horizon, but beggar's can't be choosers so i tried my best to make the most of the small amount of astro dark time available and just make the best of it. In the end i managed 9 subs, two of which were sub-standard due to passing clouds, but as is my want these days i still asked APP to stack them (using the Quality setting) and it didn't seem to affect things. So in total this is: Ha: 7 x 480s, 6 x 1200, 13 x 1200 (a little over 7 Hrs) OIII: 9 x 1200s (3 Hrs) RGB (with IDAS-D1 filter): 20 x 60s The usual Flats & Bias, stacked in APP and processed in PS. Gear used: Nikon D5300 (modded); SW 80ED (510mm FL); HEQ5-Pro; SGPro and PHD2. The RGB subs were used solely for the stars. I still need to get better at merging them with the NB channels, i'm not as good as i'd like to be at controlling them. Although in this instance, i did mask the stretching of them, and it definitely helped, but i need to practice this to get better at it. I think the fact that the RGB stack (even at just 20 mins) contained some nebulosity didn't help things. When it's just stars and nothing else, it's so much simpler to combine them. So this is just a Version 1 for now (i'll try an sSHO next). I used Ha for Red, OIII for Blue, and used one of Carboni's Actions to synthesize the Green channel. Then went round and round in circles trying to find a colour balance to my liking (on my rubbish monitor!) so i'd love to hear what you guys think. Too dark? Too much saturation? (i tend to do that, lol). I also couldn't decide on orientation, so have included two different ones. Which do you guys prefer? All C&C welcome. Don't hold back!   11. I'm back from holiday and my 130P-DS imaging scope is being under surgery for a secondary mirror replacement and cutting a bit the focuser. Since last night I had a few hours of clear sky, I put the camera on my SkyWatcher StarTravel 102 achromat. 102/500. It has a focuser upgrade and I used the OVL field flattener that I purchased for using it with my small 72ED. I placed the sensor ~55mm away from the flattener's thread and the image seems pretty flat. I always wondered if this fast achromat could be used for narrowband imaging and I did not find too many examples on this internet. Hi My first serious go at a narrowband image taken over a few nights from my back garden in not-so-darkest North Staffs Ha: 30 x 300s OIII: 28 x 150s R: 22 x 30s G: 22 x 30s B: 22 x 30s (I also took a whole load of L lights but didn't use them in this versions - still feeling my way in to NB imaging) RGB lights used for star colours only. Calibration: Bias and flats, no darks (dithering) Ha used for Luminace and Red channel OIII used for Blue and Green channels Equipment list in sig

Finally managed to add some proper Ha to the previous version (which was a noisy mess of a thing!), so this is now: 7 x 600s and 14 x 900s (4 hrs 40 mins) of Ha 17 x 900s (4 hrs 15 mins) of OIII SII synthesized using a blend of 60% of Ha and 40% of OIII Nikon D5300a 2" Baader filters Skywatcher 80ED Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro 50 Bias and 30 Flats Guided with PHD2 and a finder-guider (QHY5) Captured with SGP Pre-processed in APP Post-processed in PS The extra Ha data has made a massive difference. So this one was much easier to process. Still not completely happy with the colours, I may tweak them a bit at a later date.   15. Hello all, I think I'm done with this target this season at least. I acquired 2x6h of Ha data with a Canon 300 F4 L lens (~300mm FL F/4), maybe 2x4-5h of O3 data with the a Tair 3s (300mm FL F/4.5), another 2-3h of Ha with a Pentacon 200 (200mm FL F/4), 3h of O3 with the Pentacon, 4h of S2 with the Pentacon and 3x25m (3 panels) for each RGB with the Tair. All narrowband subs were 300s long and the RGB were 60s long if I remember well. All at unity gain, cooled between -10C and -15C. Shot from the balcony under white light pollution. I made a narrowband combination with the Ha and just a bit from the others used as lum and 40S-60Ha as red, O3 as green and 30Ha-70O3 as blue. Combined in StarTools and GIMP. Software used: APT, PHD, DSS, StarTools, GIMP, Registar. The RGB and narrowband images don't cover the same area perfectly so some stars in the left side are a little more bloated as I couldn't control them.   16. Hello all! I acquired yesterday the third hydrogen panel of this area. I might add 2 more below, in landscape. We shall see how the weather plays. 2.5h each panel in 300s subs at unity gain. And some 30s exposures for the core. Camera is ASI1600MMC on the Canon 300 F4 L lens, cooled to -15C. And first successful try with the Astro Pixel Processor, though, the stacks were made with DSS. I just purchased APP and I didn't restack them. I'm not sure if I should add more hydrogen data or move to oxygen and then LRGB. I still have time to decide until Feb-March.   18. Hello all, I started a while ago shooting the bubble and the M52, first in Ha, then RGB and then O3 too. 25min on each RGB channel, 5-6 h on Ha and 1.5h on O3. Here is the result: Then I asked myself if I should shoot L, more RGB, more narrowband or if I should go for another target. And I decided that I should try a mosaic in this area and catch the lobster claw too. The decision being took, I went below, left and then above again for panels 2, 3 and 4. R first, some of the G after. The rest of G and the B the next night. Last night I also shot 45 minutes of O3 on each of the remaining panels - 2, 3 and 4 and planning to shoot another 45 minutes on each panel the following nights, if possible. I will then leave the country for 2 weeks and I'll be back with a full moon when I will try to shoot some Ha. There will be no much time left either for this target as it reaches the limits where I can point my telescope from my balcony. I'm aiming for 1.5-2h of O3 on each panel and 2-3h of Ha this year. Supposing the acquisition can be done, I still have to stitch/process/stitch/combine all the layers. Now, this is something I've never done before and I don't know which is the best approach. I tried yesterday the new APP, I threw at him all the R subs and asked it to combine them in a mosaic way or a normal way. In mosaic it was failing with a null pointer exception and in normal way it was failing with an index out of bounds exception. So I answered myself an older question if I should wait for the APP or buy Registar and I bought the second after the first one didn't work. I registered and stacked with DSS all the R, G, B and O3 frames for each panel with the best R frames set as reference. Then I processed with StarTools each panel as RGB with the same settings and combined the RGB panels with Registar. Now this gave me a result which is almost ok, but you can see a separation line or two between panels 1 and 2 (the one with the bubble and the one below). I processed each O3 layer with StarTools applying the same settings and I combined these too with Registar. Then I split the RGB mosaic into channels and I added the O3 over the G and B channels as lighten only in GIMP and I combined back again the layers into an RGB image. I colour balanced and enhanced this result in StarTools. The result is attached. What do you think about my workflow and what approach did you find the best and how do you do it? Also, how can I normalize the layers and still be sure that I stretched them the same? There are some variables that come into play, the worsts mostly because during multiple nights I have different transparency and seeing conditions. The shop where I'm buying has the following UHC filters to choose from: Explore Scientific UHC Filter (€ 51) Optolong Premium UHC Filter (€ 52) Omegon UHC Filter (€ 58) Astronomik UHC-E Filter (€ 64) Baader UHC-S Filter (€ 79) Astronomik UHC Filter (€ 95) Lumicon UHC Filter (€ 193) They also have some other filters which are not categorized as UHC filters, but I think should be: Skywatcher Deepsky Filter (€ 52) Orion SkyGlow Broadband Filter (€ 79) -> more Light Pollution (LP) than UHC I guess Orion UltraBlock Narrowband Filter (€ 99) Thousand Oaks LP-1 and LP-2 Broadband and Narrowband Nebula Filters (€ 105) -> again Broadband probably more for LP I guess Lumicon Deepsky Filter (€ 193) I'd rather not spend 193 euros on the Lumicons (although I've read good reviews about those), but which one is the best one apart from the Lumicons? I've been searching a lot on Google for threads about this and UHC filters seem to be the best allrounder, but every time different filter brands and types are discussed and I just can't make up my mind with all the information out there. I know there are broadband and narrowband (true?) UHC filters, but I guess most of the ones I listed are broadband? I've also read that broadband filters (which are more for LP than UHC I think) and especially Light Pollution filters aren't really that effective at all, especially compared to narrowband... Or should I not be buying a UHC Filter for a first telescope in the first place, and just get used to the unfiltered views lol? I believe my night sky light pollution level is around level 6 to 7 (Bortle scale). If someone has some personal experience here with one or more of these filters, your opinion would be very much appreciated :-)

As normally with a DSLR imaging during a full moon seems to be a waste of time and as a Ha filter cuts throu the l.p. a little,is it possible to do some HA narrowband imaging with a DSLR? I have a 12nm Ha filter,would that work or does the bandwidth have to be narrower to cut the l.p. out.. so it be like a Ha,rgb image..Or is this just for the ccd owners?
  21. Hi all I'm just starting the plunge to the deep end of mono and narrowband imaging. I have read the available info from here (SGL) and other sources but the findings seem to be rather inconclusive. So here's the thing. Some of our fellow imagers seem to be boosting the nb signal by using luminance channel. Methods for LUM vary from using just the Ha, using all the nb channels combined or using lum filter or better yet using ccd grade light pollution filter. I'm sure there are other methods as well..? From what I gather, there are some "drawbacks" to each does't represent all the signal just uses the same total signal ratio (does not actually increase the S\N that is already there in each of the channels) --> there's no new "information" gained from here star size is/might be different than in nb channels? So what is the "industry standard" method to be used or is there any? According to my logic the only method that actually could add information is the last one. The problems caused might be fixable with post-processing? I am probably missing something here, but what? I should also note that ccd users might use different hw binning. Since cold cmos cameras (which yours truly has) do not support hw binning and low read noise negates the benefits somewhat anyhow, I would consider this to be a non-factor. Regarding the option 3. I would think that this same drawback would affect all those that image in LRGBHa...
  22. I think I'm done with the Hydrogen layer for these nebulae. I started 3 weeks ago a 4 panel mosaic with the 130PDS. I shot around 2h on each panel in 180s subs at 300 gain. And recently I thought to lower the noise in the darker areas and I shot another 7h with the Canon 300 F4 L and I combined the dark areas. I see now that I should have taken more frames with the scope as the quality of the image taken through the lens is way lower. Anyway, I still combined them a bit. The plan is to add LRGB too in the future and perhaps some O3 as well.   23. I present you an image of the Flaming star nebula and the Tadpoles. I have 2 versions. Ha only and HOO. I started with 4 panels mosaic shot with the 130PDS, each panel is ~2h exposures. Then I shot another 7.5h with the Canon 300 F4 L lens, but the result was awful, compared to the mosaic. So I added this only in a small amount and only on the darker areas of the image. For the O3 image I only used the Canon lens. The IS element inside gives me a lot of headaches, and I have coma in some corners, other corners are out of focus, etc. And it behaves differently each session. Not only the IS was not playing nice, but I also had focus shift due to temperature drop and I did not refocus. The camera used was the ZWO ASI1600MMC, cooled to -15C. 180s subs at 300gain with the 130PDS and 300s subs at 139 gain with the Canon lens. Mount: AZ-EQ5. The lens was wide opened and the newton was corrected with a SW coma corrector, hence the halos around the brighter stars. Guiding: OAG with 130PDS and side-guiding with a 200mm lens for the Canon lens shots. Software: APT and PHD for acquisition; DSS, APP, StarTools, Registar, GIMP for processing. When blending the O3 I had to abuse star reduction, star removal, heavy blurring, masks, layers, etc. for a decent result.   25. The fine, dry conditions that we had for a few nights in the last couple of weeks enabled me to capture about 9 hours of narrowband data of M1. I need to capture some new flats following a slight change to the imaging train so the image below is not as good as it might be but it still is worth showing, I hope. I'll reprocess when I have the new flats and post an update. Equipment: TS (GSO) 12" truss RC (Operating at 1700 mm Focal Length with AP focal reducer) with modified back plate, Mesu200, Atik383L+, Atik EFW2, Lodestar X2 on Atik OAG Captured with MaxImDl and processed in Pixinsight. Exposure: S-II=H-A=O-III = 12 x 900s each filter. Combined using SHO script in Pixinsight and composited with a synthetic luminance made from all the subs. The colormask (sic) script in PI was helpful in modifying the image to a more pleasing (to my eye) colour palette. Derrick
