  1. Hi all, as well today the sun is shining brightly here. I set up the Lunt to have a look at it, at first just for observing. However, somehow I cannot resist and have to do a sketch This time I've chosen reddish pastels on grey paper to better catch the color of the view in the eyepiece.   2. I finished observations of the Mizar A spectroscopic binary. Calibration for the Hα line made on water lines contained in the Earth's atmosphere. I used LowSpec spectrograph with 1800 grooves/mm reflective holographic grating, APM APO 107/700, QHY163M camera and HEQ5 mount with guiding. It turned out that the Earth's movement practically compensated for the radial velocity of the Mizar A system. Based on the analysis, I received the result: vr = -8.8 km/s in fact the system is approaching at a radial velocity of -6.3 km/s. I also determined the phase plot of radial velocities based on my measurements for the Na (together for both lines) and separately for Hα line: Error is based on half my spectral resolution (0.2 Å/pix corresponds to rv = 10 km/s). Each measurement corresponds to the stack a few images. The most important purpose of observing this binary system was to record the historical Ca II line (often called as CaK, 3933.66 Å). The distances in the violet part of the spectrum are almost 2x smaller than the corresponding shifts for the Hα line. This line initiated the discovery of spectroscopically binary systems, and Mizar A was the first discovered system of this type.   3. 1. Alcyone (Eta Tauri, η Tau, 25 Tau) in the Pleiades open cluster, spectral type B7IIIe+A0V+A0V+F2V. This star is a multiple system, but my goal of observation was the H-alpha profile of the main component: Horizontal axis scaled to radial velocity: 2. Pleione (28 Tau, BU Tau) also in M45, spectral type B8Vne, variable star, the brightness changes in range: 4.83 - 5.38 V. This is the faintest star, which I observed with using APO 107/700 & Low Spec spectrograph 1800 l/mm. It was difficult, but obervation was positive (high gain, exposure time 4 min): 3. Tianguan (Zeta Tauri, ζ Tau), spectral type B1IVe+G8III: (mark ":" according to the VSX database means uncertainty). This is an eclipsing binary with variability type E/GS+GCAS, period is 133 d. The brightness changes in range: 2.80 - 3.17 V. 4. Cih, Tsih (γ Cas), spectral type B0.5IVpe, variable star with a magnitude range of 1.6 to 3 V: 5. Alnitak (Zeta Orionis, ζ Ori), spectral type O9.5Ibe+B0III. Variable star with a magnitude range of 1.74 to 1.77 V. Spectral lines have characteristic P Cygni profile, below H-alpha:
  4. I've just bought a Daystar Solar Scout 60mm DS for H-alpha imaging of the Sun. I am now looking for a suitable camera to use with it. I know I could use my DSLR, but for H-alpha that is not going to give best results, so am looking for a dedicated monochrome imaging camera. I have identified the ZWO ASI178MM as a possibility that fits my budget and has a large enough (I think) sensor to image the entire Solar disc if I use a 0.5 focal reducer which will give me a total focal length of 465 mm. Does anyone have any experience of this camera in this application, or know if it will be suitable? I know it does not have an IR blocking filter, which I understand is an advantage for H-alpha.   5. Hi all. I am looking for a zoom eyepiece to 60mm lunt. My first choices are Lunt zoom and Pantax smc xf zoom. Which will work better? Can you have any other offer? You could say something more about these eyepieces while observing h-alpha?
  6. I bought this filter about one year ago with the aim to protect both my Tak-100 DF and a Quark eyepiece which eventually I never bought. Therefore, I am selling it, hoping that it will go to a good home and be used as it deserves. It is a top quality Baader ERF for solar viewing with Quarks. It is in excellent condition and comes complete with housing measuring 146mm. The previous owner used to fit it on an Altair 115mm F7 refractor. With some minor modification (essentially adding some padding to the internal side of the housing) it can be fitted on many other telescopes. It cost £550 but selling for £320 including postage. Telescope: Lunt LS50THaB600PT Eyepiece: Celestron X-Cel 10mm Date & Time: May 29th, 2019 / 1630-1700 CEST Location: home terrace, Dusseldorf region, Germany Technique: reddish Koh-i-Noor Toison d'Or pastels and pastel pens on greyish Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper Like all of my astronomical sketches , I did this one directly at the eyepiece.   8. Taken on Sunday evening with a 98% Moon. Comprising of 12 x 600s subs using an ED80 with a 0.85x FF, an Atik 383L+ and a 7nm Optolong Filter. Stacked in DSS, and processed in PS. Full frame and cropped, mono and h-alpha colour using NC Actions. Thanks for looking Adam.

Managed a bit of further processing on data captured on holiday - this field of view is something I would really struggle with at home (it's 9 degrees lower, and doesn't rise above my roof from my garden!) - a widefield of the Eagle (M16), Swan/Omega (M17) and M18, as well as a lot of HII in the surrounding areas. The HA filter helped a lot in cutting through the atmosphere - it's not fantastically high from the site we were at, and I still had to have a couple of nights at it dodging the trees. Details: QHY163M + Canon 200mm f2.8L (@f3.85) + Baader 7nm HA filter, mounted on a Losmandy GM8. Exposure 2h50m in 5min subs. Binned a few subs as they were of poor quality. Processing in PI.   10. i was wondering if anyone had any experiences with the idas uv/ir and the idas uv/ir ha enhanced. Any advice would be appreciated about which one to use with a full spectrum camera.Thanks!
  11. I'm selling my 1.25" baader H-alpha 7nm filter. I purchased it on amazon several months ago, but have never actually used it, as my CCD didn't work. (Its just been put in a filter wheel but never used!) As such it is in perfect condition. Price £75 including delivery to a UK address.   12. Heres my version of NGC 7000 and the Pelican nebula, taken back in 2015, through my William optics zenithstar 70ED with focal reducer. To fit it all in I did a 4 pane mosaic. Think the subs where 15 x 6 mins for each pane..........hope you like.

  15. Second image in a weekend! This set of data was taken on 10th/11th Sept 2017 from W Oxfordshire (with the moon at 75% waning), and shows Simeis 57, otherwise known as the Propeller Nebula, in Cygnus. DWB111 is the lower (southern) prop, with the northern half catalogued as DWB119 - there are other DWB catalogue numbers for the surrounding faint stuff. There's not a lot about this object that I can find - the distance isn't even determined (but it's likely to be not too far away in galactic terms). See: https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/pdf/2003/06/aa3181.pdf Equipment was: FLT110 @f5.6, ST2000XM with Astrodon 5nm filter, Losmandy Titan. Guided with an ASI120MM on OAG using PHD2. Image capture with APT, and processing in PI. It almost certainly needs a lot more data (can you ever have enough?! ) - this is 10x20min (3h20m total) before it clouded out - the faint stuff is a bit marginal, and with more data I think there's a lot of detail in that gas that can be pulled out.   16. Captured the data for this image on Saturday evening with an ~85% moon floating around, but pleased with the level of data I managed to get here. Taken using ST2000XM, Astrodon 5nm HA filter, through FLT110 at f5.6. This was first run after summer with a new adaptor between the drawtube of the FLT and the FLAT4 reducer - works brilliantly as it eliminates play found in the 2" nose/adaptor as before, and also reduces the vignetting as well. Exposures were 11 x 1200sec with APT; off-axis guiding with an ASI120MM and PHD2; reduction/processing in PI with final levels tweak in PS. So much background stuff here, I didn't bother with any DBE as couldn't really place the markers! Think the flats have worked nicely here though (tends to be less of an issue with backgrounds through HA anyhow). Thanks for looking!

  18. Some ha (falso colour & monchrome) and white light of the active regions. Now all I've got to do it find the best tuning setting for the quark and improve my processing - all advice welcome.   19. H-alpha solar sketch! Also put up my 90mm refractor beside my LS50. Date : 3/4/17. Time: 3:45 p.m. IST. Nothing much happening about prominances and filaments. AR 12644 still putting up a nice show. AR12645 is comparatively quiet, but spotted micro flare coming out of it during session. Looks like AR12647 and 12648 are developing! Clear skies!

I have a Meade 12 inch LX200 and since I'm getting old (84) missing sleep just ain't fun anymore...Sooo I am switching to solar..I will buy a glass H-Apha same size as aperture but it seems the 12 lets in to much light or something. Am studying like crazy on all things solar but am a bit foggy about the H-Alpha...Any help out there? Thanks Ken

  24. I took my first Ha image last night and tried to combine it with data of the same object taken previously. First, the Ha image (consisting of only 3x5min subs) just looks like a luminance ....but not as good Second, when i combined it with the old data in PI....I really did laugh out loud (or hahaha as noted in the title). Can anyone suggest a tutorial on LRGB/narrow band imaging either here or on the web - I can find them but if someone knows of a good one (and that's what this forum is for right?) then I'd really appreciate it.   25. A lovely morning here in St Neots, Cambridgeshire: a light breeze only, thin cloud keeping away from the sun, equipment working perfectly. The only problem is the seeing. It's not the usual "wobbly" sort, rather it seems to make everything slightly blurred. Ah, well, can't complain... This is my longest animation so far; 1 hour 20 minutes in 85 frames. I hadn't bargained on the image getting brighter as the sun rose higher, so this one start dark and gets brighter over the 85 frames. I was lucky to catch it at a particularly active time I think. Gotta love that H-A action! The last animation was slightly jerky so this time I reduced recording time from a minute to 45 seconds and tried to record data back to back with no gaps, which was not always possible, as the unguided scope needs regular correction. Still, it's come out much smoother than previously. Iain
