Current equipment is: Explorer 150pds, EQ5 pro, Canon 600D (stock), and the EvoGuige 50ED and 120mm mini for guiding. I'm looking at getting the camera astromodifed (~£100) and also a coma corrector (~£130). I only have the budget for one right now, so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on which to purchase first?

Hi All, I have a Star Adventurer but have had problems getting consistent results even when setup was as near to perfect as I can do, (this was focussed on due to this issue). It took me a while to find out that when the eyepiece is is extended for focus it is very loose, so loose the graticule moves indipendantly of Polaris / background. I have asked the supplier, "Astroshop.eu", to highlight the problem and ask for their feedback. Question to Astroshop.eu: I have had a constant issue with Polar Alignment. As I cannot use it so often, (visibility), it

Hello all, I have come to you all with the "too much asked question". I have been using the telescopes from local Astronomy group since few years, and now during these Corona times, it is harder. So now I have decided to invest some money on getting myself a scope, and would so sooooo would love your inputs. My main concerns are: I may use it only once a month or so, I wanted something that I can handle (maybe >10kg). I don't own a car, usually I use a bicycle with a carrier to get around the city. (I had a look at the second-hand (5-7 yrs old) Skywatch MAK 127 Cassegrain

I have already posted my first astrophotographic session report in the telescope review thread: Tecnosky 80/480 APO FPL53 Triplet OWL Series - Review. But since that is more of a general review/diary of my experience with the new telescope, I feel some of the issues I am having are being buried and they will probably get more visibility if I post them - in a more synthetic version - in a dedicated thread. So, a few nights ago (October, the 5th) I took out my new telescope for its first light. All the photos have been taken with the 0.8x flattener/reducer and the Optolong L-Pro 2" filter a

I have been waiting for this telescope for almost five months. Since May, 19th, to be precise. The day I went to the TS Italia store and saw for the first time the SLD model, model now discontinued. I even missed the last available piece just for a few days, once I finally placed my order, June, 25th. It was to be replaced by a newer model, available at the end of the Summer. Boy, am I glad I did miss it. The wait was definitely worth it. The new and improved model is simply beautiful. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it on the Tecnosky website a few weeks ago, when they posted the

Hi, I recently looked into telescope's & dso's again due to an interesting sight in the night sky . I wanted to get into telescope's etc... but my budget and other things got in the way. This time there's no budget limit (that doesn't mean I'm bill Gates though). My main concern is size since I will carry the telescope with my bare hands (bag). I don't have a local astronomy club or telescope shop around so I don't know if an 8" Newtonian is too bulky/big. Can someone post comparison pictures, if you have an 8" telescope (preferably newtonian, width and length)

Hello all, I am looking into making a hobby out of spectroscopy but don't exactly know where to start. All I can really go off is a high school education of physics and the various reading that one usually does when looking into something new. The main questions are, essentially; 1. What is the best spectrometry equipment for an amateur like myself? I have little to no knowledge on all the necessary equipment, so any recommendations would be very much appreciated. For any suggestions, if you wouldn't mind giving a reason as to why you recommend a said product, I

My Az GTi mount had been working well, apart from occasional Wi-Fi drop-outs, until yesterday, when the batteries ran low. I'd left it running unattended for a while, and when I came back found it had stopped tracking and the red LED was continuously rapidly flashing. This isn't described in the users manual, but I presumed it was a low power indication. I plugged in an external battery pack, that I know to be good as it has been used before and has 8 of the same batteries as the internal battery pack, but now when I switch it on the LED flashes a couple of times and then stays stead

Hi All I’m considering purchasing an 8”aperture, f3.8 newtonian ( primarily for EAA) from Orion UK and would appreciate any input or feedback from anyone familiar with the product, the company or the purchasing process - and how to assess the compatibility with my current cameras. This is would be a step up from my current equipment and entails selecting components that I’ve never used and know little about such as a rack and pinion focuser and components (ACU-3L), and coma corrector (Wynne Corrector). I’ve added links to these items below. I’m also feeling unsure of how

Hi Everyone, need a little help choosing the right flattener/reducer for the William Optics Zenithstar73. I am after one that does both jobs so that rules out the dedicated Flat73 which is just a flattener! So I was wondering if I could get away with the Flat6 0.8 reducer which does say it works on scopes 70 - 80mm f/6 but doesn't list the ZS73 in the models list or do I need to spend the extra and get the Flat6A11? Can anyone shed some light on this have email 365 where I have seen the Flat6 but had no reply. Thanks in advance.

Hi guys and gals, I recently purchased a pair of Nikon Aculon 10-22×50 Zoom binoculars for around $179 and I'm pretty disappointed with them. I live in Semi-rural northeast Texas and was looking for a good pair of binoculars for a casual stargazer like myself. I thought these would be the perfect pair, I was wrong. The field of view is pretty small and the focus is annoying. The view is like tunnel vision at 10× and too dark at 22×. Do any of you individuals have any helpful suggestions on what exactly I should get that suites my individual needs? I am looking for something

I currently have a laptop in my roll-away observatory, connected to a powered USB2 hub on the pier, from which I then power and control the various bits and bobs on the rig. This is now the 2nd USB hub that has stopped working. Can anyone recommend a reliable one? I have seen a few threads mentioning USB hubs but none actually recommending a reliable one. The laptop only has 2 USB sockets so although my cables will reach it, without the hub I can only connect 2 things at once, one of which has to be the mount. All the stuff in the observatory is powered via an extension cable from the ho

Anybody from the UK ever buy a Feathertouch Microfocuser from the US? I’m considering replacing my Baader Steeltrack with the Feathertouch. Comparing prices in the UK against suppliers in the US it seems that it might be beneficial to buy direct from the US, especially considering that as a CN member you get 10% discount from Astronomics. If the package is small enough it might just get by customs as well ?

Hi Everyone, Like a few others out there, my wife and I are new to Astronomy. We are currently looking at purchasing our first Telescope and have been looking at some of the posts on your great forums. We thought we had an idea of what we wanted to get but like everyone, that changes with the information you give and receive from others and what you want to be able to do. I am going to take the advice from some of your members and do a bit more reading before spending our hard earned cash. My questions are as follows: 1. We currently do a lot of birdwatching. Would t

Hey everybody, I’m thinking about picking up a new telescope this year. My budget is about $1000. The features I would like to have with my scope would be it’s GPS enabled, computerized motor system, an HD camera etc. I’m sure you know what I’m looking for. Anyone who could help steer me in in the right direction would be much appreciated.

equipment Avalon X-Guider - Need Advice
DeepSkyMan posted a topic in Discussions - Scopes / Whole setups
Ok, so this is a follow up to my earlier post, I’ve almost convinced myself to pull the trigger on The Avalon X-Guider, http://www.avalon-instruments.com/products/x-guider-telescope-guide but I’m hoping for some feedback from SGL members before I make the final commit. Looking at the animation on the Avalon website the operation looks pretty slick however there is one area that concerns me and that is initial alignment of the device with the optical axis of the main OTA. It appears that this is wholly dependent on the mechanical attachment to the OTA, in my case this will be the X- -
Ok, so here it is, I’m quite fed up with clumsy thumbscrew adjustment of my finderscope, so I’ve decided to get a guidescope mount that provides proper alt-az adjustment. So I’m looking for recommendations for a lightweight guidescope mount. I have looked at the Skywatcher offering, but this is a whopping 900 grams I’m thinking I’d like something closer to 500g or less if possible. The intention is to mount my 80mm Altair Astro Maxi-Finder on this device. Note the mount will be used for classical finder scope activity so the resulting kit doesn’t need the tight tolerances that would be req

Hello to all, I have got a chance of going for a IOptron CEM25P that I want to use in my back garden. I also would like to take it on my travels around the UK and possibly abroad. I have organised a deal for this mount together with an 80 mm triplet refractor and guide scope. I can order the mount with 1.5” or 2” legs; weight difference is about 3kg for the heavier version, extra cost about £100. I just wondered if anyone could advise if the 1.5” legs would be good enough and stay stable in the wind? Does anyone own this mount and have either of the two sizes of legs?

Hi there folks, at the moment I'm primarily a traditional, through the eyepiece observer, however I'm putting together a list of components/software that I will need going forward as I venture into the realm of EAA. Primary consideration for my EAA platform is that it be easily transportable with as small an on-site footprint as possible. My thought is that I want to be able to control everything remotely over WiFi, I have an abhorrence for spaghetti cabling, so want to be able to keep this situation down to a minimum. To this end I have put together a list of components which I think will
