  1. Hi After selling all my equipment some time ago I have now started the hobby again with a C925 on an AVX mount. Last night was my first chance to try out the Starsense Accessory, which seemed to work quite well. However I was a bit concerned that when doing the calibration for the SSA camera position and during the Polar Alignment routine the tracking seemed very jerky at higher magnifications. The video I took of Jupiter after alignment did not seem to show this (although poor in all other ways) so I don't know if the jerkiness is something to do with tracking mode used by the SSA handset during alignment. It could also be a mount fault or poor balance but I would expect that to show in the video? Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks Barry
  2. Hello all, I bought relatively recent a SCT 0.63 reducer/flattener for my C6. I'm planning to use it with the ASI1600 camera, but it seems that I can't figure out the proper spacing distance between the reducer and the sensor. That or there's another problem with the scope that I can't figure out. The first distance that I tried was ~105mm. I achieved this by using a SCT adapter to T2 which is 50mm + a Baader VariLock set to ~28mm + the filterwheel 20mm + 6.5mm the distance from the sensor to the camera thread. + the filter width, it should be ~105mm. I understood that the closer the sensor is placed to the flattener, the better the field is flattened, but the reduction is weaker. I didn't mind that. I then tried to use an M48 (has also a T2 thread inside and deeper) to T2 adapter which was about 15-20mm. In both cases the stars were not in focus away from the center, with an out of focus elongation towards the edges (I don't know which word describes this). The following M13 is with the Baader VariLock and the Crescent was with the shorter adapter. I didn't have time to test without adapter at all and now it's going to stay cloudy for a while. Don't mind the quality, the M13 is unguided with ~20min (6s subs), the Crescent is ~20min (1min subs), guided. Very bad seeing. Did anyone use a C6 with a 0.63 reducer/flattener and APS-C or 4/3 sensor with success? Or does somebody know which is the correct backfocus distance and how to get rid of the distorted stars towards the edges, but still using the same scope + flattener?   4. Hi. In preperation for a remote box-observatory i have been setting up a pc for telescope controll and more. I now have Kubuntu working with a ssh tunnel and headless vnc setup. KStars is installed with all necesarry drivers for my celestron avx, eos 550d and orion autoguider. Everything starts up in KStars and i have controll over all the exuiptment, except! The issue. 1. When slewing to an object using the nextstar hc on the mount: Recticle in KStars moves in the same path as the telescope, and ends up at desired target. 2. When slewing to a RA/DEC coordinate in INDI control panel -> Eq.Coordinates: Recticle moves as excpected and ends up on target. 3. When selecting a target in KStars gui, right clicking and selecting slew or track in mounts context menu: All kinds of craisyness.... The recticle moves erratic. Sometimes to high in the sky, and sometimes down in the ground. At one point i ended with the counterweight bar straight up and the scope pointing more or less at polaris, when telling it to slew to the zenith. The strange thing is that the recticle in KStars is pointing where the teleskope is pointing. So KStars "knows" that it's not pointing the scope at the target i selected, but it keeps on going. I was thinking it could be some time-site issue, but the t-s is set up in INDI control panel. Using INDI to slew manually, everything works as expected. Not 100% sure how the sync option works in KStars. Could i have synced to some random place in the sky and "un"calibrated KStars? Don't know how to undo it if that's the case. New to KStars and INDI. Hope someone can help with this issue. Magnus.

  7. Hi Folks My 6 month old (used 4 times) Celestron Nexstar SLT 127 Matsukov Cassegrain has always given alignment problems. It is difficult to align and once aligned, quickly goes out of alignment. Just this evening after using the Solar system align using Venus, I selected Mars (which is very close to Venus these days). The scope went about 5 degrees south of Mars. When I sent it back to Venus, it didn't go there either. I have had problems with the two star align as well. Once aligned, it held Saturn for about 15 minutes before going out of the field of view, but when asked to go to a different star, it gets quite lost. Sometimes it goes below the horizon looking for things ! I don't know what to do. Returning is not easy given that I am not in US regards Rajeev Kingston Jamaica
  8. I recently got a Celestron Astromaster 130EQ Telescope for my birthday and have been having loads of fun looking at and taking photos of the Moon over the last few days. One issue I had with the scope was that I couldn't angle the Red Dot Finder down enough to align it with the object I could see in the Telescope. I have been using it by taking note of the distance the red dot was out and trying to direct the telescope taking this difference into account. It occurred to me (before I looked at this forum) that if I could only raise the tail of the red dot finder higher (I could see that to bring the dot down the LED at the back was raised), I could get the alignment accurate. I took the mounting bracket apart and looked at the design of the plates. I then designed some new ones in Sketchup widened the back dimension and, as I have a 3D printer, printed the new ones out. The new bracket plates are 2mm wider at the back hence raising the back of the finder higher by 2mm, which in turn lowers the red dot down to it's correct alignment point. I thought I'd post on here to say how I resolved this issue as I notice that others had also suffered from this problem. I have posted the STL (design) files for the 3D parts up onto Thingiverse should anyone want to download and print some for themselves, I will also put out an offer to print some for others should they not have access to a 3D printer (just PM me). Here is a picture of the new mount plates in place. Terry.

Hail esteemed astropeeps I set up the Celestron wifi module on my Nexstar 6SE (good wifi signal, no problems connecting), opened Skysafari 4 onth' IPad, but all I got after I had been into skysafari settings and put in the IP address was connection failed. I have the settings on direct input (it is like that on the actual wifi module too) alt-az go to, selected my telescope, but always connection failed. Tried it on sky portal on IPhone 6, and whilst it did connect and slew the telescope, the alignment procedure failed every time. Does anyone one have any advice, please? Why won't Skysafari 4 connect (actually 4.5.3) and why won't sky portal align? I've checked other forums and other posts and all the settings seem to be correct. What button have I failed to check? If you have screen shots of any settings, that would be helpful.
  10. Hi there. I finally decided to replace my old Orion Starshoot with a nice new Neximage 5, and at the same time got a laptop sporting Windows 10. The camera came with iCap software, version 2.2, and installation proceeded without incident. I got to the point where iCap was recognising the camera, but when I clicked on 'OK' iCap stopped almost immediately, at which point an error message came up announcing that iCap had closed and Windows was (allegedly) looking for a solution. I repeated the 'launch' exercise several times, always with the same result. It's really frustrating, as I just can't get on with imaging at all. Does anyone have an idea what I could try to get my Neximage up & running properly? Thanks Alan Stewart
  11. Hi, I have recently bought the celestron AM 130 EQ. when setting up , I wrongly assembled the counter weight first rather than adjusting the lattitude knob both at the front and rear side. That made the counter weight pull towards the floor and now the lattitude adjustment knob is jammed, I cant move it counter clockwise. The pin at lattitude is showing 0 degree. What to do. Please help.
  12. Hello, Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about whether it's possible to mount alternative OTAs with a dovetail or rings to the mount that comes with a Celestron Nexstar 80GT? In particular I am wondering about attaching a SW Heritage 130P? I know that Celestron did a 130mm reflecting 'scope on his mount, but it looks to also have that plastic tube clamp, seen on the 80mm image below. Thanks, Gavin

Hi all, After updating my legacy HC to the 99.22 (I had to, because of the GPS rollover issue) and the MC to the 5.23 firmwares (siply because it was there, and I've got greedy), both acquired via Teamcelestron, my CPC was operating normally until, all of the sudden, its altitude motor stopped working. I've uploaded a video at youtube showing what happens: https://youtu.be/p2cHJkPt9Vc As you can see, I don't get any error message in my HC but, if I try to move the scope in altitude, nothing happens (no movement, no motor noises, nothing). When I release the clutch and move the scope manually in altitude, it does move but has a weird noise by the same place where previously it used to make a snap one, which I already reported to celestron tech support once, and even made a video that I also uploaded to youtube: https://youtu.be/KCc69eUSbeY I've already seeked help from Celestron Tech support (and the folks at Cloudy Nights) but any help from you would be very much appreciated.   14. Hello , I am physics student in Turkey . I have used telescopes but they were manual mount because of that I do not have any experiences with GO TO mounts . I upload photos and I pressed alignment button before finding 3 or 2 stars . Still ı did not find any stars from catalog . I really watched many videos but I did not do it well my process still not continue . 12 photos I upload , first photo teleskop , last photo is the my last step , which button should I have press?
  15. Hi! I am very new to SGL (just signed up a couple of mins earlier) and to astronomy as well, though I have been facinated with celestial bodies since I can remember. I recently purchased a Celestron Powerseeker 127EQ but now I’m having troubles using it and I can’t seem to see anything through it. I also have a Celestron collimating eyepiece but I still can’t seem to make it work. Anyone here who has experience with the same scope? Would appreciate if we could chat a bit as I would be really interested in your experience and how you ultimately made it work!
  16. Unexpectedly i ran into a guy selling a Neximage 5 imager for just $70 canadian so i figured it would be a decent beginners camera and since i'm an imaging noobie i just grabbed it. I am aware it will not be for solar but i figured why not start with small steps in imaging before i buy my good camera, $70 is not a pile to waste should i only use it on limited objects then never touch it again lol. Does anyone out there have any tips and tricks that would be useful in my attempts for first time imaging??.
  17. Hi gang, I have a small issue with my CPC & need some information from other CPC owners. Basically I was having a look at the Fastar connection for Hyperstar but noticed that the whole Secondary assembly was a little loose & could be rotated on its own leaving the corrector plate securely fixed. Here’s where I made my first mistake, I lost track of the original starting position of the assembly but it didn’t end there. The only way to tighten the assembly & stop it rotating freely the corrector plate needs to be removed as the Secondary unit is tightened on the underside of the corrector. Next mistake, I forgot to mark the corrector position to aid refitting, not considering the fact that it’s position would be important on reassembly. Turns out that my corrector has no significant markings on it except in 2 places on the edge, about 45° apart are an arrow pointing to the outer face & the number 4. Through much head scratching & the use of digital calipers I think I have found the correct orientation of the corrector plate in order to reassemble but I am still stuck with not knowing the correct position of the Secondary assembly. I have read various articles that contradict each other stating that one of the 3 collimating screws should be at 12o’clock or 6o’clock. What I have noticed though is that when the outer retaining ring is unscrewed from the Secondary assembly, there is a small locating grub screw that sits within a slot on the assembly housing, see pic: a big ask I know but is it possible for other CPC owners, mine being a 9.25” if it matters, to unscrew the Secondary retaining ring & note the position, on a clock face (top of OTA as 12), of this locating slot. It would be much appreciated. Thanks I know there’s plenty of discussion pertaining to Primary & Correctors as marching sets, although from what I gather this was for earlier SCT models, plus 365 Astronomy lists the corrector as a replacement part: https://www.365astronomy.com/Celestron-C9.25-Replacement-Corrector-Plate-50984-1S.html so I’m hopeful that nowadays the matched pair issue is not relevant & ive got away with my stupid mistake.   18. Newb here. I have settled on my first telescope being the 4SE or 6SE and I have a Sony Alpha 300 DSLR I would like to be able to connect to play around with AP. I am barely starting to grasp the terminology involved with telescopes in general but it seems connecting a camera to a telescope is a whole different ball game. It seems as though the 4SE has a separate eyepiece and camera attachment? Looks like you can just flip a knob to swap between the viewer and camera? Whereas the 6SE it appears that you have to remove the whole eyepiece to connect the camera. After reading some reviews everyone says they immediately wanted a more powerful telescope so I am thinking the 6SE may be the way to go but I really don't like the idea of having to swap back and forth by removing the eyepiece, is there an after-market accessory that would allow it to work more like the 4SE (flip a switch from viewer to camera and back)? And I guess my other question is are the optics really that much better on the 6SE that it would be worth the hassle when connecting the camera? I see that the light gathering capability and magnification are better but how perceivable is that difference? My goal is to do some moon viewing but it would be great to see some cool deep space objects too. + One final thought, how much does the auto star tracking feature help or hurt the image quality? I mean on a 20 second+ exposure the object is going to move some amount, is the Nexstar tracking system really able to keep the object that precisely still in the optics? Or should I just expect to get blurry spots of light when photographing deep space objects? Thanks

I've had my telescope for a couple of months now and I still didn't get the chance to try the sky align option, I watched some video and tried aligning my scope many times but it never seemed to work. I only use it to watch the moon and I have to manually move it every minute or so because it keeps getting out of frame, how can I set it to track the moon on its own? I wanted to see Saturn a month or two back but I couldn't do it, I'm planning on trying again tomorrow as I'll know where it'll be in relation to the moon and mercury. Any tips you can give me? I really want to see Saturn. (Also, will my 25mm eye piece that came with the telescope work to see Saturn?) Thank you

  25. Currently I have 25x70 SkyMaster bins but I think they are too high magnification to be gliding the night sky with (I got them for £35 so I didn't mind much). So I'm on the lookout for a set of Skymaster 15x70 or 12x60 bins Thanks, Tom
