Milky way and Andromeda
AstroGee replied to Antoinfletcher's topic in Imaging - Widefield, Special Events and Comets
good effort! you can clearly make out Andromeda. With a bit more processing, the stars would be clearer. Although sating that I quite like the brightness in the first image as it is. -
Night Sky (On iOS) has a very intuitive interface, augmented reality and approachable (especially for kids). In terms of general stargazing it seems head and shoulders above Sky Safari, and therefore worth a mention here.

I'll check that out, thanks. As I'm just starting out, with imaging, tweaking, processing to learn, I will get many miles out of something cost effective. I posted some images recently with an 800mm f11 camera lens, which is diffractor based. I've improved on those straight away so a cheaper optics won't be holding me back

I might end up getting one of these. Very nice.

Deep rabbit holes are chock-full of cash I've heard. Often my own! -
The Dark Side beckons...
AstroGee replied to clarkpm4242's topic in Imaging - Widefield, Special Events and Comets
For me there are two different considerations, both of which are valid: -The image is a snapshot in time, and -What is the image trying to convey to the viewer? The first one demands accuracy to represent what happened. the second is more of a feeling, emotional response in the viewer. How did it feel to be there on that evening? That is where editing, tweaking, photoshopping out some elements can be useful. It's when someone strays too far from either does an image get totally overblown and not believable, or not representative. I've seen a few. -

Sky is fake. stars - fake. It's all fake. Do you're own reserch etc etc. 🤣 -
Agh. I missed Sky Safari 7, not sure why that didn't come up win my app search. Hopefully should be able to refund/switch.....
-
The only way I can capture both is to do a double exposure, one for moons and one for the planet. It's effectively a HDR capture I guess. (Noob here also, relatively speaking)

Really like these, bravo! Yes, weather was better than forecast yesterday, was pleasantly surprised

It seems they've rejigged the prices again... catch them with the cheap basic app.. Sky Safari (£2.49) Sky Safari 6 Plus (£12.99) Sky Safari 6 Pro (£34.99)

Hi - looking forward to seeing some images!

there are some good straight to the point affinity tutorials for astro here: https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/tutorials/photo/desktop/video/512549746/

I've only been on here for a short while now but am grateful for the info on the site and its members. Please keep up the good work, it does make a difference.

Thanks - yes it seems to be the same as with camera gear then in terms of the cause. I am mindful when bringing gear back in from the cold, a sudden transfer back to a warm indoor environment will have the same effect. I use a plastic bag tied up until its brought back to room temperature, does the trick. (good luck trying that with a large scope though).

I sometime find it tricky to gauge the brightness also, especially when working from a laptop with variable brightness. I haven't yet but plan to get a set of images which I know are at the proper exposure, to use as a comparative reference.

The M6 must be small and portable compared to a DSLR, as it does away with all the mirror and viewfinder - which isn't needed at all for astro. The Dual pixel autofocus should make star focussing much easier. Noise control and dynamic range is much much better, should be able to get a much cleaner image. Haven't used it, but Ive noticed a modern EOS camera (450D --> R) is much better for IQ.

That they are. And need to be, there's so many acronyms 🤣 Learning lots here...

great start, well done! I'd be curious tp know when star trails start to appear with the setup you have, perhaps a longer exposure would allow a less noisy ISO. If it were me I'd choose a longer exposure on the foreground, to lighten it up a bit more. Not much though, I like the silhouette and the blue windows. Would a colour tint adjustment remove the orange have in the lower sky? looking forward to the next image. cheers for sharing.

as a noob question - how do these work? Is it a thermal-control type of insulation, a way of prevent moisture ingress by sealing, or even moisture absorption? Thanks

I convert all of my canon RAW or CRAW images to DNG before processing. It works out well. A lot of the trickery comes about in PP (Post production). that's where additional patience come in!

Would you be considering second-hand or new for the camera and lenses? Some places to try for second hand: wex mpb ffordes
