  1. I'm a relative newbie. I use and would recommend the Optolong L=Enhance filter and I hear good things about the Skytech CLS. With any colour cast, I start with a levels adjustment in post processing to align each colour channel independently and line them up on the histogram. There will be plenty of tutorials on Youtube for for your chosen software. Good luck and clear skies.

You should have installed index files down to about 20% or 30% of your field of view.  Which index files do you have and what is the field of view?

What configuration settings for solving are set?

    What does the log say?

    I've got index files 4208 - 4215

    According to Stellarium my field of view is 6º 43' x 4º 29' @ 200mm focal length, 2º 41' x 1º 47' @ 500mm.

I'm using a DSLR with 200-500mm camera lens.

  3. Is there anyone with experience of getting plate solving working with Cloudmakers AstroDSLR?

I'm using ADSLR on Mac to control my cameras. The program has a plate solving option which integrates with Astrometry.net. I have Astrometry installed and have downloaded the files I believe are required for my focal length. The program runs but fails every time. Anyone have any experience they can bring to bear please? The tutorial videos on the cloudmakers website aren't very informative.

Yes, my 600d is also modded. I've only recently purchased the l-enhance, so have only had a chance to use it once(with this target), but from my limited experience, I found processing was much easier after using the filter, the data seemed to be cleaner, and the nebula seemed to 'pop' more. Definitely don't regret buying it. Worth having a look at the 2nd market, as a lot of people seem to 'upgrade' to l-extreme which I believe is not as suited to a dslr. I got mine for nearly 1/2 price

LOL, Still trying to get to 25 posts so I can get access to the classifieds back. Difficult as I don't have a lot to say 😂

How are you stacking the images?

If you're using DeepSkyStacker (DSS) then try this:

    • Open DSS and go to Settings in the Options menu.
    • Click on "Stacking Settings" then the "Light" tab.
    • Under "Stacking Mode" check what's selected, most likely "Averaged", then try the likes of "Median" or "Kappa-Sigma". I found "Kappa-Sigma clipping" with the standard settings removes the red cast from my modified EOS 1300D, as well as removing satellite trails as well.

    Hi Martin,

I'm working on Mac and have been doing everything in Affinity Photo. I've just tried Siril for my latest heart Nebula shot and this produced a much better result in the colour calibration. May try this method in future. I do find that having come away from Windows some years ago does seem to restrict my options with this hobby.

A light pollution filter can make a big difference if you're in an area polluted by sodium lighting.

Two images from some years back when I was using a modified Canon 1200D.  The Orion Nebula, an easy target was without the CLS filter.  The Horsehead, a much fainter target, was my first image with the CLS filter and I was amazed what a difference it made.  Previously when I'd tried the Horsehead, it was washed out by the light pollution.

Thanks John, I didn't realise a CLS filter would make such a difference to a modded camera.

  7. So this question pops up many times I'm sure.

I'm currently on a work vacation 🤔 and cashflow is a bit tight. I have been imaging with my regular Nikon D500 unmodded and 200-500 zoom lens. I want to image nebula which I can't do with my current set-up. So, the new (10 year old) kid on the block is a Canon 600D off EBay which I've successfully ripped (Carefully removed) the U/V filter out of - The HA mod. First target - the Heart & Soul Nebulae which has turned out ok in the end, but was a real problem to process. I guess I just need to learn new techniques.

The issue is, with the modded Canon I'm starting off with a strong red cast across the stacked image. I want to take the next step to better results and an easier processing journey. Having checked out the options, I'm thinking of going with the Optolong L-ENhance clip-in filter which I believe will instantly solve all my light pollution, red cast and extended processing woes with one sprinkling of its magical fairy dust.

Am I right, or does someone need to take me to one side and slap some sense into me?

  8. Hi all,

The usual apology for the newbie question that follows.

I am currently at the beginning of my journey for deep sky imaging. I am currently using my unmodded Nikon APS-C DSLR with my wildlife photography Nikkor 200-500mm lens. This is supported on a Sky_Watcher Star Adventurer Wifi Pro 2 mount and good quality sturdy tripod. I have just got my guidescope etc and await clear skies (Been waiting a while).

My question is - Would changing to an entry level telescope (I'm thinking Redcat or Zenithstar territory) be an upgrade to using my camera lens, or a backward step in terms of image quality?

I hope at some stage to move to a dedicated astro camera. Possible the ASI 533.

Any help making this decision would be truly appreciated.

  9. Hi all,

Another newbie here. Looking for advice and inspiration from those of you who have blazed the trail. I've recently started treating my photography hobby more seriously and slowly building up my gear and experience. I am at the beginnings of my Astrophotography journey and I'm currently getting to grips with my Star Adventurer mount. Imaging at the moment with my Nikon D500 DSLR and telephoto lens. Next step will be auto guiding as and when the finances allow. Please check out my Instagram for an idea of my competence level. Great to be here and looking forward to some constructive conversation. Wishing you all - clear skies (Which is more than I've had for weeks).
