  1. How about an initial meeting at a local pub. Set a place, date and a time on this forum and see who turns up. (Wouldn't matter about the cloud cover and you can't please everyone all of the time)). Then see how to take it forward and gauge the interest. I am very new to this as well but am amazed at the amount of 'local' people with a similar interest and it is always better (I think) to meet and discuss these sort of things face to face. I see from this forum a place in Godstone was a meeting point for a group - does this still happen?
  2. Show me as interested. I live close to Caterham and being new to this would appreciate talking to wiser heads...
  3. Does that mean that on a computer runs XP there is no need to flash the chip?
  4. Many thanks to all who have taken the time to reply. This forum is amazing in the breath and depth of knowledge. As I said before I am returning to 'astronomy' after a few years away and have spent considerable amount of time reading the forum over the last month. I am sure there will be further questions in the future..
  5. The lens was the standard Nikon 55-200 at 165 (1/4000 @ F9 using a filter)
  6. Attached is my very first attempt at the sun..... Initially I thought the three dots were blemishes on the camera but having seen a similar attachment I can see they are not. All I need to do now is make sure the sun is in focus! Nikon D80
  7. When do you use the sockets marked 'PC', "Auto Guide' and 'Aux" on the base unit then?
  8. Many thanks..... I think we are almost there. Please clarify the link. ie what plugs into the computer (can it be a serial or USB socket?) and what plugs into the telescope (is it via the Nexstar hand set or can it be via one of the sockets in the base unit? A picture or diagram of what is needed may solve it ... Great forum...... I am just getting into 'astronomy' again after a few years away and am finding it totally absorbing.
  9. I have posted this in another part of the forum but didn't get the answer so hope this may work......... I have borrowed a friends CPC 800 (until Jan 2011) and have the latest version of Cartes du Ciel on a laptop running windows XP. How do I use the computer to run the 'scope and what setting do I input into the 'telescope settings' panel of this program. What lead do I need and is it run via the Nexstar remote socket, the 'PC" or the 'Auto Guide' socket on the base unit? (The manual is a bit vague around this). Many thanks....

  11. I have just been lent a CPC800 and would like to know if the GPS start searching when you just switch on the scope or do you have to select the alignment method to activate it? Is there a way of telling if the GPS has been updated? I have about 3 weeks to get my head around the 'scope to see if I like it and may be given the option to buy as my friend makes little use of it (and needs the money). When I have had a chance to look at the 'scope and contents I expect there will be further questions! I have downloaded the manual but the issue regarding the GPS is not clear (at least to me). Many thanks..... Malcolm
