  1. Just doing some test runs on the Straton star removal software - it does a nice job and offers lots of flexibility on the settings. I can get a very nice image minus stars, which I can then take into Photoshop and process. That's all very fine, but I'm stuck now since I don't know where the star field is in Straton, and I need to add it back to my processed image! Does anybody know how to get Straton to show and save the star field that has been removed, there's nothing obvious in the menu's. Thanks, Martin
  2. Chris I think you're being a tad hard on yourself, your image is really good, the framing & processing are top notch and the results speak for themselves. One little tweak you may want to try is a small star reduction step (Annie's actions or similar) to see if it adds anything. This target looks glorious in colour though, so if ever the clouds go away, see if you can grab some OIII to make a bicolour version. Martin

  4. Chris - that's a very nice bi-colour version of the Heart, and you've captured a surprising amount of additional nebulosity around the main target as well that's not often seen. Martin
  5. Lovely widefield Chris, it's refreshing to see the Rosette floating in plenty of space rather than being right up against the edge of the frame. The jpg looks great on my screen.

  9. Yes there's a considerable difference in the two images you show above - the compression issues with the Astrobin version are clear to see. Maybe it needs to be loaded in a different format in Astrobin? Nevertheless it's a cracking good image of the Heart nebula, and will no doubt look fabulous in colour, so if ever the pesky clouds relent soon, we look forward to seeing added OIII data as well.   11. Hope the weather improves soon for you Barry, since it would be good to add the additional narrowband data. Nevertheless you have a good image there already, and have squeezed a lot more nebulosity out than in other versions I've seen of this. Glad to hear the condensation issues are now resolved as well.   13. Although it doesn't quite fit across your mega-sized sensor, it still looks really good, with excellent detail & resolution. Will be interested to see how this big chip handles data with a reducer in the imaging train.

  15. Hi Barry - I had exactly this same problem when I first used my QSI with the reducer set-up on the Tak. In my case I tracked the cause down to the speed of cooling. Usually I just booted up and set the QSI to -20 and it's there in about 2 minutes! The Atik460 I used before, never cooled that fast. Although I did not see it every time, on more than enough occasions to irritate me with the QSI, I would see condensation on the reducer side which faced towards the chip. I then started to do a ramp-down of slow cooling so it would take an hour or so to go in steps down to -20 and that eliminated the problem completely. This still surprised me, since there is the filter in between the chip and the condenser, and that never fogged up. Not sure if you slow cool or not, and I cannot guarantee that it will work for you, but give it a try and see if it helps. Martin

  18. Yes this is one of my favourite targets for imaging. I did this target a few years ago, and there are several challenges (a) it's a broadband target, and nearby Rigel dominates the subs so very easy to get pronounced gradients, you need to decide upfront whether you want to include or exclude Rigel in your framing, ( there are an amazing number of pesky satellites tracking through this region, criss-crossing the Witches Head so make sure you use a good sigma clip routine in your stacking software to eliminate these, © the luminosity for the Witches Head is very weak, so try to get lots of data and you'll need to do this under moon-less conditions, (d) maybe concentrate on luminence data first since you can get a very respectable image just with this, if time and conditions allow, add RGB later to get star colour into the image.   20. Hi Steve - I'll also be following your progress here with interest - at some stage I want to upgrade to 2" filters and the Astrodon's are just ridiculously expensive. If your 1.25" Chroma 3nM filters work well, then I'll certainly consider trying out the 2" versions. If you want to do a head-to-head of Chroma 3nM versus Astrodon 3nM, all 1.25" filters, you are very welcome to borrow my set of Astrodon's for a night or two - would give us both valuable comparisons.   21. Lovely image Paul, delicate and very effective processing - excellent star colours, lots of detail in the arms and nice to see the core not blown out either. If you are able to get some H-alpha data, and blend it to the Red channel to bring out some further nice features. Martin
