  1. Got mine from ebay, pack off four for a few quid
  2. Just finished one of these.used the ota mount rings and attached round bread boards to it for alt bearings, covered them in kitchen worktop edging (stippled one) tyen teflon strips on the cradle for bearing surface. Used LP and teflon furnitaure moving pads for the azimuth bearings.
  3. Pics will be posted when made less ugly lol. Added an eyepiece holder and canding some of the bolts and needs a paint. BUt none the less, managed to get first light last night and despite a nearly full moon and its proximity to orion was able to get some views of the orion nebula and make out detail. also managed to get some views of jupiter and was very impressed. As much as it pains me to say it as a man , size does matter . Still some minor balance problems when switching from a 2 inch to a 1 1/4 inch eye piece , however have invested in some heavy magnets to use on the OTA to remedy this. Also successfuly collimated for the first time and easier than i thought now have to sort out the focuser to smooth it out .
  4. Looks a very familiar list I bought a non celestron focal reducer and works fine Also bought revelation astro (I think) focuser , cheaper and works fine. Didn't know about the firmware improvement any link of how I do that
  5. Some great videos, may be a silly question but I have the dual speed crayford focuser with the mod still work
  6. Now i have built the mount for the scope, getting ready to use the thing . Maybe i was spoilt by the focuser on my 80mm equinox, but the 2 speed focuser on the newt could hardly be described as silky . Anyone got any ideas as not too keen on forking out for a new one
  7. Well, finally had some time to myself and so got on with the project. Used mixture of 18mm mdf and ply for the construction. Used round 4cm thick boards for the alt bearings attached to the scope rings then they were wrapped in laminate strip ( had some surface texture) on Teflon sheet. Base bearing made from an LP record and Teflon furniture moving pads. Then used 3 ice hockey pucks for the feet. Few bits and pieces like handles left but for the most part done , it's ugly , it's big and heavy bit its mne and looking forward to seeing through the scope, so no doubt cloudy for a month
  8. I am a relative newbie, and was in a similar situation to use with roughly the same budget. A bit further down the line now perhaps I can give a little perspective as I have been through a list of scopes of all types. Ok . FIrst thing is decide what you want to look at. is it Stars/ DSO/ PLanets etc or a little of anything. Secondly if seeing is not perfect near you then consider portability in the equation , if you are able to drive to a darker site then having a portable scope you will use is more important than having a massive aperture scope you dont use much. Certainly when i was starting out imaging was on my list of wants, but as anyone here will tell you planetary imaging with webcam is best and cheapest options before even considering DSO's through a scope because then mount is paramount , and they cost a lot. I have a SCT, Large and middle sized refractors , 12 inch DOb and had a 80mm apo, and if I started again I would honestly go for a non Goto tracking Dob such as the skywatcher ones that you can collapse down for transport and storage. That will give you change from your £1000 to invest in things such as decent eyepieces and otehr bits and bobs you will need
  9. Got mine recently and only got to do a few quick pictures of the orion nebula and horsehead. On the whole very happy with it, have enclosed a pic of what mine is sitting on top of :-)
  10. Looks great and some nice detail at the core, well done!. Did some last night on the astrotrac but at iso 1600 and a 4 minute sub ended up with burnt out core and noisy picture because of the ISO, will try on 800 tonight weather permitting
  11. well done!!! and yes I know about the swearing as i ended up opening the thing back up a good four times because one of the bl**dy ribbons wasnt perfectly seated, and i need to re-do again at some point to rid the sensor of a dust spec, but it can wait for w hile
  12. For that price definately, i have one in my collection of m42 lenses and it takes some nice widefield shots

Hi, i have this lens and use if for astrophotography, although must say i prefer using my 50mm 1.8 super takumar m42 lens because of the focus is firmer on the super tak.have used it full open and stopped down one or two stops and it is sharper stopped down. Just not a big fan of the focus ring

Well , treated myself to some new toys at xmas and finally managed to get to play with them Skywatcher 120 evostar (2nd hand astro buy and sell) Skywatcher electric focuser Astrotrac Sky vaguely clear this evening so thought would give my astrotrac setup a quick try. Managed to get two3 minutes subs before the clouds, one of orions nebula the other the horsehead, a little noisy and lightpolluted and some moon light chucked in but promissing. Easy to set up , very impressd and looking forward to some great photos. Evostar - as i was bored got the evostar out whilst the astrotrac was doing its thing and had a quick look at the moon and jupiter. Slight fringing on the moon however this was remedied using the baader fringe killer which gave it a slight yellow hue, but overall greatly impressed.tried 32 mm,15mm and 2.5 on the moon, and althought the 2.5 was not terribly usable on jupiter it ws just about acceptable on the moon and if seeing was better it may just be ok. Used the skywatcher electric focuser and found easy to fit and it was excelent in use making the scope a joy to use with minimal vibration during operation, heartily recommended.

All the usual easy checks - is your battery source charged, the cable connected properly and is it working Do you hear the motor when its connected As far as live view goes, if connected to my celestron C8 its isnt great ( I have a 1000d) , make sure youre aperture setting is wide open and shutter time are correct. I tend to use a viewfinder diagonal to check focus , which can be picked up on ebay relatively cheaply, and it has a magnification of 1.6 x on it also and that seems to work ok on the celestron
  16. LOL, going to have to stop looking on ebay and astro B+S, if only for the sake of my marriage , pretty difficult hiding a 6 inch refractor and 12 inch next , just about managed it so far....
  17. Forgot to mention also bought a 90mm acro as well because it was going for a song on ebay and just had too.... well it will make a guidescope at some point , honest
  18. I have to be honest and say havent had 'first light' with the evostar 120 yet. HAve most of the bits and pieces now to get the 12 inch skywatcher newt on a dobsonian base so looking forward to that. I put the 6 inch on the tracking mount and it fared ok keeping jupiter in the eyepiece pretty well. DOnt get me wrong i like the 6 inch acro, its a nice hunk of metal :-) and was very happy with the views of orion and stars , also havent had the chance to look at the moon yet so we will see.
  19. I would go for a manageable sized dobsonian , the collapsable ones would mean you could get a bigger scope in the car. Will be good to get you observing. Perhaps you could look at some with a tracking option maybe , but as for the goto - for me i thought it would be a'must' but to be honest i use an app on my iphone as an atlas (but equally a good book would do) and dont use the goto and for the price they add , for me , if i could start again wouldnt have got it but rather would have put the money into a sturdier mount or better eyepieces
  20. Im a newbie :-) , my advice would be find something you will use . I know it sounds silly , but its all well and good buying a nice 12 inch dob if all it does is sit in your house because its too big to lugg around. Taking into account what the situation with light pollution is in your area, as portability will play a big factor if you have to travel to dark sites to get good viewing. As far as photography goes , I would start with widefield work and get comfortable using , focusing, processing those objects before you consider sticking it down the end of a scope because thats a whole world of cash :-) Also consider using webcams for planetary pictures as a good start in that particular avenue of astronomy. all in all get something you will use, get familiar with the sky etc. I bought a celestron C8 on a goto mount as my first , the C8 is great , however the goto is hit and miss (probably my fault) and to be honest i just use the tracking feature of the mount now as finding these things is most of the fun :-)
  21. just read your reviewm excellent thank you and very helpful. i have bought a collimating cheshiire eyepiece and will be on the hunt for a chromacor, in the meantime the yellow filter arrived and will combine with the fringe killer and report back , clouds permitting....
  22. excellent , where did you pick up the chromacor , was it second hand , i had a quick read , not entirely clear on the 'wave correction' side of things
  23. chromacor looks expensive, however i suppose if it improves the CA that much much less costly option than an apochromatic of that price ! I'd be interested in hearing how the first light goes !! how do you test to decide which model you need !
  24. yes i have the baader finge killer, which to be fair took out the purple fringing , leaving a nice yellow in its place. jupiter was nice and bright put poor contrast and surface detail yeah the larger F ratio scopes probably need a prohibitively expensive moung , at least for me, as the 6inch f8 is big enough!
  25. Hi all, recently bought a F8 6 inch refractor helios ( ithink) second hand scope. NOw i realised would have some CA with it and bought a cromo corrector filter . Had first light on Monday. Very happy with its performance on stars and dso , in this case it was orions nebula which showed reasonable detail despite light pollution. HOwever , went to look at jupiter and had a nasty fringe on it with poor disc features , so stuck the croma corrector in the eyepiece and left with a nasty yellow fringe instead of purple . NOw i had heard adding a yellow filter could help (i only had a green one which i added and didnt improve the situation) . When defocused the pattern seemed symmetrical i.e. didnt seem to be a collimation problem with the scope. NOw i realise CA a problem on acromats , and i did used to have a 80mm apochromat for DSOs until i changed it for a 12 inch reflector (work in progress) as much of my dso stuff was done with camera lenses for photography, but had thought would be usable for visual for planets (i.e i thought the shorter F 5/6 6 inch ones would be unusable , but the f8 be ok) So, will the yellow filter help? If not what F ratio is uable in a refractor for planetary work? I have a celestron C8, 12 inch dob and now 4 inch and 6 inch refractors , it was bought because wanted big refractor so its not a big problem just wanted to see if situation could be improved Steve
