Could I suggest Turn Left at Orion, I've just bought a copy of this, should have got one earlier. I've had suggestions as to what to view in the sky and can easily find them in stellarium but once you're outside viewing its not that easy to find some of the objects. What I like about Turn Left is that it provides easy to find reference points together with directions leading what your really looking for, just copy it down on a bit of paper or take the book with you.

I'd recommend Opimate, been using one if these on motorcycle batteries for years. You can just plug it in and leave, the charger regulates itself and just keeps the battery topped up.
Looking for quality 8X42 ED binoculars

Hi Steve,
I was in a similar situation in that I wanted something light for daylight use and having tried out a few brands in my local outlet I plumped for Nikon Prostaff 7S 10x30, they’re light and very sharp
I know that this particular model does not meet your requirements as regards magnification and eye relief but they also do a S7 8x42 which could be worth a look.
