  1. Hey everyone. I was wondering if there is an equivalent ccd camera to the Orion Starshoot Autoguider that is available in the UK at something even RESEMBLING the US price. I can't understand how a $250 camera setup gets converted to being over 350 pounds here! Can I get away with using something cheaper like a Celestron Neximage? Thanks

I have been drawn to this product : KW Telescope Kitchener Waterloo Ontario SkyWatcher Products I think the theory behind it is that it provides electrical contacts which fools the camera into thinking that there is an autofocus lens in place and so the sensor can find focus when you manually focus the scope. This trick works the same as with a slow camera lens which is something around F/5.6 when used with a 2x tele-extender which pushes the widest aperture to F/8 or thereabouts and so the normal camera computer cannot achieve autofocus.   4. I've seen there is one for sale at 350 pounds atm from ian king. I'm not sure about it since I've never seen how one is used before. Still leaves me with the requirement for a second guide scope ASWELL as a new mount with an autoguider port! (mine is just the basic dual drive version with no computer guiding ports) Does this change everything?

Merlin, I want to manual guide since I do NOT like to take out a computer into the field and this also means that I am completely not reliant on having a powerpack (my mount runs on batteries ) I saw the LVI standalone guider but I want to wait until people have more exprience with it. Maybe at f/7.5 I can get roughly 60 seconds unguided if I'm lucky - leaves me with the brighter objects but then again, in the city it is hard to see ANYTHING without sky glow
  6. Hey everyone. Over the winter I had some dabbling missions into the world of astrophotography. I enjoyed setting up the mount - drift aligning etc just felt like I was actually observing instead of just clicking on a computer screen to achieve auto focus, auto tracking etc. Thing is that I would like to add a small guide scope so that I can try manual guiding. My imaging scope is a SkyWatcher 80ED and I'm using a celestron cg-5 mount with dual drives (non-goto since star hopping can be fun - sometimes ) I have read that my guide scope should have a longer focal length than my imaging scope wh
  7. Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone has ordered one of these scopes yet? I like the basic Skywatcher dobs and have my eye on the 10" version with drives. This can be upgraded to full goto correct? Has anyone used one of these yet? How is the setup for the gotos etc? Thanks
  8. Thanks everyone. By a 'long three years' I mean that my degree has taken up my life for at least 6 days a week for the last 3 years! I've not had a weekend off for over 2 years! I've had a look at the mathematics and it isn't too involved - I mean, try to integrate the full navier stokes equations and you get what I'm talking about! At the moment I am interested in galactic studies, such as galactic formation and also collisions. I guess there is a LOT of study to do on these topics which would let me carry on through a PhD or something. The engineering research projects I am currently involv
  9. Hey everyone I am currently drawing to the end of my bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering (been a long three years) and am considering my next move. I was planning on an MSc in Astronomy with Astrophysics at the University of Manchester (I live here and also they are linked strongly with the Jodrell Bank Observatory). Does anyone have a degree in the above subjects and have something to offer? Is it all maths based at this level (to such a degree that engineering is)? Will doing this kind of thing make astronomy a chore and therefore less fun as a hobby? Thanks for any input Jay
  10. Heya Tez. I agree with what the posters above have said. If you're gonna be using it for normal daylight photography aswell then go to a photo store and have a play with all the makes. Some people prefer the Nikon layout (I'm a Canon man myself!) and some of the buttons are in different places. You should be aware that if you have large hands, then some of the new small dslrs ARE small and can make it a bit cramped. For astrophotography, they're all pretty much the same at this price point Happy hunting!
  11. Well, I'll be imaging with my Skywatcher 80ED which is at 480mm right? I guess a drift alignment with no motion for 5+ minutes should give me at least 2 minutes unguided (key word is SHOULD)
  12. Thanks Steve. I've got a T-Ring already but only a 1.25" adapter which I'm gonna replace with a 2". Is the 2" extension of the WO one enough? I mean, with this extender will my focus be right at the end of the reach of the stock focuser?

  15. Well, manual guiding means I'm gonna be crouched over some guidescope staring intently at a guide star and making corrections. The more I think of it, the sillier it sounds! Alrite, new question, How long can a VERY good polar alignment get me? 3 minutes? 2 minutes? Less? This is with an heq5 and spending over an hour on drift alignment. Thanks
