I currently process with DSS and GIMP but decided to download a trial of APP with a view to upgrading my processing software. I have had a play around with APP a few times, but so far the results are no better than I am currently able to achieve. What are the advantages of APP ? What features should I be concentrating on using that are better than DSS and GIMP ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good and not so good YouTube astroinfluencers

Astro modified DSLR - Recommendations for buying second hand
Astro Noodles replied to Sarek's topic in Discussions - Cameras
Hi. It may be worth watching this. I found it useful. If you have a large budget, plenty of time and don't get frustrated when things don't work, then spend away. If you're like me and have a modest budget, limited time and want to build up an imaging kit to match your skills over time, then I think this video makes a lot of sense. Especially when you take into account that you are unlikely to get more than 30 nights a year when astrophotography is practical, and good quality astrophotography kit can be re-sold for a good percentage of what you paid for it. -
I think there will continue to be progress. I haven't seen an amateur setup with adaptive optics yet. There are continuous improvements in software and automation. Also, the sorts of equipment which a reasonably well equipped amateur can afford today would have been astonishingly expensive 20 or 30 years ago.

Hi and welcome to SGL.

Hi Without filters it is going to be difficult to get great data at this time of the year - it never gets properly dark. Looks like you have PA sorted, and there is data which shows the general shape of the Nebula. It just looks over-stretched and the black looks clipped. Also, did you correct the colour channels ? Nico Carver has some useful videos on Youtube which I found really helpful for getting to grips with GIMP. 🙂

ASI1600 and 130PDS - about to give up, need help
Astro Noodles replied to BrendanC's topic in Imaging - Discussion
It was mentioned earlier that your imaging session began at appx 22:00. I think that is too early - it will still be very bright. Nautical dark will be about 23:15 at the moment in SE England. There won't be much point taking images before Nautical dark even with filters. -

That's a bit pessimistic. Anyway, if it is a signal, chances are they will still be a couple of hundred light yeas away or further. I don't really know about these things from a technical point of view, but it would seem highly unlikely that any extra-terrestrial technologically advanced civilisation would waste the energy broadcasting radio messages. I assume that radio is subject to the same inverse square rule that light is, so the power required to send detectable radio messages over hundreds or thousands of light years would be immense. 'The great silence' may be because everyone is listening, hoping that the other idiots will spend all their energy doing the talking. 🙂 More likely that future Wow! signals will probably also turn out to be someone at Parkes Radio Observatory microwaving a pie.😁 I think that a supernova, great comet or meteor shower may be more likely

Very nice image. I can't believe you managed to put together a 7 pane mosaic in a single afternoon. May I ask what software you used?

Thanks Jim I have a Raspberry pi4, guide scope 120mm etc. I just haven't got round to using it yet. 😄 -

Not only simple to use, robust and accurate but also lightweight. For those of us using startracker camera mounts which need careful balancing and weight is a factor, the good old RDF is perfect - especially as you can get a close-up through the camera live view anyway. I must try a Telrad. I have been meaning to. It may cut down on the amount of test shots I need to take when trying to frame an object without visible reference stars. -
And the same to you.

I don't know - you tee it up so a guy can show off his telescope and he tells you to go and look on Wikipedia.

Another question - What on earth is a Dilworth telescope?

One thing I would very much like to see is a successful SpaceX Starship orbital flight sometime this year.

And also telescopes I would imagine. I can't think of a single thing that would create more of an interest in Astronomy. It would be great news for everyone from NASA to FLO. After the initial rioting, and every nutter with a transmitter broadcasting drivel into space. - I would hope that calmer heads would prevail. And then we would all start having to get used to the new reality.

Undeniably an exciting prospect, but one with terrifying possibilities.
