Hello Gary
I will take some photos when it stops raining - much easier than trying to explain in words.
Its not difficult and even during biblical rain and high winds (like today!) it is bone dry.
All the best.
David.
Thanks David

Hi David, sorry to resurect an old post.... The problem getting the split roof to seal, how did you get round that? I am planning a small obs build just now and still to finalise my roof design, yours looks great.
Cheers, Gary

Its an ASI1600mm pro analogue or Atik Horizon or QHY163 or Altair Hypercam 1600 Pro.
Personally if it was me I would be choosing between the ASI and the Horizon.

Hi Adam, thanks for the info. I since found out it's a qhy163c. I'll check out the atik Horizon now.

Howdy,
Its been a while since I lasted posted in here, just getting back into imaging. I am still using a 1000d and think the its time I up'd my game and got a dedicated astro camera. I have been looking around all the various online shops and have a few cameras on my short list, most I can find reviews online for but I cant find any reviews, bad or good, for the Explore Scientific 16MP Deep Sky Astro camera.
Anyone on here using one, or know of someone using one? Is it a good camera? Is it ascom compatible and can be controlled via any of the usual complete imaging sequence programs such as APT, NINA, etc?
Thanks,
Gary

Howdy,
Still on my mission buying my kit for my return to imaging. I want to use one of the new 'all in one' mount/camera control gadgets like the Stellarmate or ASIAir.
I have done quite a bit of research on the ASIAir, which presently has limitations that are putting me off, mostly its inability to connect to a HEQ5 via eqmod to Skysafari, only through Synscan. This means I'd have to 3 star align the mount through the hand set before I could sync through plate solving to ASIAir. (maybe my understanding of this limitaion is flawed)
Anyway, I have now found out about Stellarmate which looks similar to ASIAir but the software seems more 'complete'
I am not bothered about the ASIAir only being compatible with ZWO cameras, I will start of with my trusty 1000d as it is supported and upgrade to a ASI294MC Pro at some point.
So, questions, what are the pro's and con's of both ASIAir and Stellarmate? They are similarly priced but as I said the Sterllarmate seems more complete.
Which is better, which would you buy?
Cheers,

Thanks, that might settle an argument I'm having with a work mate who is a Sony aficionado, lol

They make their own sensors?
-
Quick question....
Who manufactures the sensors used in canon cameras, esp 1000d?
-
I had decided on this scope and dedicated flattener but this thread has put me off a bit.
Was the problem ever resolved, and if so how?

Will this be better than the polar align tool in eqmod?

@ James, no Probs mate.
@ teslar, is it available as a kit?
-
thanks for the link James, however I am interested only in the conversion if it preserves the standard ratio as I will want to use the handset as well as eqmod.

That is a very neat, professional soution to a long standing problem with these otherwise great mounts....... I would be very interested in buying a kit if you are considering kitting it.

Ordered a SW 2"diagonal on Tuesday night from TS, it arrived today, great fast service.

Why not? I know about the theory of EQ mounts not requiring to be levelled but I don't buy into that I'm afraid. Most tripods come with built in bubbles for levelling, if manufacturers think they should be levelled then who am I to argue? It is difficult enough to get our eq mounts to track smoothly enough for long enough for long exposures, why not make it as fail safe as possible?
All Pier adaptors that I have seen have the ability to be levelled.
If anyone can convince me that they don't have to be levelled please feel free to do do........ :-)

The base plate is fixed onto the pier. The top section is adjustable for level using the nuts on the 3 uprights......

looking forward to seeing the finished pier/obsy Adrian . it would have looked nicer white mate, to go with the mount.
Sorry about the shameless plug, but Gonzo, he got it from me, I make them to order, either eq5/heq5 or eq6. drop me a pm if you are interested mate.

Gary, I've the GSO variant and use it with a dSLR... weather permitting... which it's not been..
Thanks, do you use it native or with a reducer? If so which one do you use?

Some good info there, and some stunning images...... Has anyone tried one of these 6" RC's with a DSLR yet? I will soon be buying another imaging scope and quite like the look of these.

I have found that it is vital to get the base level! If it is not then the further off level it is then the further out the goto will be.
The sooner SW do a 3 star align routine the better these mounts will perform I think.

Do they not make the base too high? The ones I know of are another 6 inches high. .... I am already on tiptoes at the zenith.

Sounds like you are making progress...... I am interested in making a levelling plaatform, I regularly take mine to see dark site and it's always a pita to level.

How did it go then dude?

Thanks David. I suspected that was the design, nice to see it works. I'll be building my micro obs this year and still pondering a few different roof designs.
