  1. After trying and failing some time ago to find a video tutorial on how to strip-down my Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro mount, clean all the bearings and gears, re-grease them, and put it all back together again, I eventually learned how to do this from various other online resources and have now created my own video tutorial. For those of you with a Skywatcher HEQ5 or HEQ5 Pro mount, or indeed an Orion Sirius EQ-G mount (which is the same mechanically), this video can help you to keep you mount running smoothly through regular DIY servicing (~every 2 years). I hope you find it useful. Here is the link...
  2. I recommend a Lithium Grease with a wide temperature range. You can purchase a 2-part Geoptik Grease from the likes of Rother Valley Optics or Astroshop.eu. You get two 80ml tubs for about £18. One is for the gears and the other is for the bearings and shaft. I have just published a detailed strip-down and re-build video tutorial for the HEQ5 on YouTube. Here is the link:

  10. Hi there. Polar alignment and Star alignment are easy to confuse. I fully agree with the responses you have received from endlessky, explaining that star alignment has nothing to do with good tracking, and is only about finding the objects in the sky. You might also find my polar alignment tutorial on YouTube helpful...
  11. Hi guys. I'm new to this forum. I have an HEQ5 and have a Rowan Belt mod. I have experienced a stretched belt (my fault!) causing terrible guiding, but DEC backlash is one of a number of major culprits. I see that's what this turned out to be for you on this occasion. Yes, there is a VERY fine line between backlash and binding on the DEC worm! By making VERY small adjustments I eventually found a sweet spot where I could not feel any backlash and the DEC would run the full 360 degrees without obvious binding. One thing I found was that you should not loosen the three DEC carrier bolts very far....just enough so that the carrier can move when you turn the grub screws, as the Astro-baby site rightly advises. Also, when you have made an adjustment, tighten the three carrier screws a little bit at a time in turn around the three screws until they are all tight, and then test for backlash and binding. It took some patience but I was very happy when it was done as my guiding troubles disappeared...I even got 0.58" at one point which is a first for my mount! Was so pleased I wish I'd done it sooner.
