  1. Yeah I think where I’m getting confused is the cross hairs don’t come into it when I’m aligning the focuser and secondary do they? I’m just trying to get the secondary into the middle of focuser and using the middle screw so the secondary looks circular is it? And then to align the secondary to primary using the 3 outer screws on secondary.. And then finally use the primary screws to aline primary. I was aligning the focuser and secondary with collimation cap, and then putting in the Cheshire with cross hair and expecting that to be in the center.
  2. Hi All, My secondary mirror got knocked out of line on my sky watcher heritage 130p and i'm trying to realign it but not having much joy. I have a collimation cap and and a chesire long tube. Below i have two pics, on the right is how it looks through the collimation cap and left is how it looks looking through the cheshire. for the collimation cap it is my understanding for the secondary to be in line that thick outter black line should be an even circle am I right in thinking that? and for when looking through the chesire long tube the cross hair should be going through the center of the donut? So when i then use the chesire with cross hair and center the donut on that as in the below pic, the collimation cap looks lie the second picture below. Which is best to use when intially trying to realing the secondary with the focuser. i was using the collimation cap, but finding it very hard to get the secondary exactly circular. Am i right in thinking it the black thick outer line that needs to be evenlingy circular in order for the focuser and secondary to be in line? i'm using the middle screw to try and get this in line. but can never get it properly in line the top picture above is the best ive been able to get but when i then look through the chesire it looks compeltely out of line with the cross hairs so im getting confused. Any help greatly appreciated. I've spent last night and half of today trying to get it in line again.
  3. @John thank you, I will get that one. Would it be worth my while getting the ES eyepiece also as I’ll have enough for that left over if I get the filter or would I notice much difference between that and my vixen npl 30mm and stock 25mm.. or is there any other filters that I should get along with the uhc. Live in an urban area with street lights but have a few dark spots in the garden and also have realised I actually apparently have a good enough dark sky area about 30 mins drive away which is handy.. I can also always bank the leftover money as well and put it towards something else in a couple of months if you people don’t think it’s worth getting anything else.
  4. Thank you all for your suggestions. @Philip R its my first scope so not sure what I prefer yet, I do like the idea of having all the individual focal lengths but also like the option of just needing to grab one eyepiece say if I was going camping the zoom eyepiece would come in handy. Saw the Televue, would be a nice investment, I'll probably hold off until I upgrade the scope before going for one of those. Yeah I was looking at the shrouds, I was trying to find a shoe of foam big enough but nothing in the shops by me when I checked I might just order it online and make it next weekends project. @John Yeah that's what I was thinking , I like the idea of shiny new eyepieces arriving but I think a good filter might be the most rewarding to me at the minute. Is there any particular filter you would recommend?
  5. I have 200 to spend on an eyepiece for my Sky watcher heritage 130p. I already have BST star guiders 8mm, 12mm, 18mm and Vixen NPL 30mm, and baader Q 2.25 Barlow. I was thinking of maybe either getting the Baader zoom seen a few people talking about it on here or the Explore Scientific 62 26 mm was another eye piece recommended. Is it worth getting the Zoom if I already have the above eyepieces or would I better of getting the ES? Or is there any other eyepieces anyone would suggest, I've also seen people mention UHC filters recently are these worth investing in for a skywatcher heritage 130P? Basically I have money to spend and need to know where id be best spending it. Any suggestions appreciated. Sorry put this in the wrong forum, meant to post in the beginners equipment forum🤦‍♂️
  6. The skies where a dud here last night and it’s looking the same for the rest of the week. Looks to be some sunny spells next weekend so fingers crossed there’s a clear sky and I’ll get chance to have a go at this.
  7. Brilliant thanks pixies ill try get some of that tomorrow in. hardware shop.. that's a really good video, might have to start on a light shroud next. Does the collimation look ok to you? ill probably be able to get a more accurate idea once I have the tape on as well
  8. Looking like partly cloudy skies here tonight going by the forecast. So might give this a go tonight if there's some clear sky..
  9. Just another question in addition to the above on how the collimation looks. When using the chesire I noticed the movement in the focuser that was mentioned earlier in the post. So I just get white tape and tape that around the thread below the hexagon part o the focuser and just screw it back in? Does the tape not shed bits into the telescope when focusing in and out from tearing with the threads?
  10. Ok me again 😳.. i got a Cheshire collimator and have the below results now I think is looks ok but. Primary looks ok to me , I can’t see the secondary clips but am I correct in saying I shouldn’t be seeing the secondary clips when using the Cheshire??
  11. Sorry for the delay in responding was away the last few days and had no service where I was. It’s this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0192PLKSO?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
  12. Cool thanks I’ll order a new one and hold off doing anything to it until I get it. I think it’s meant to be a bit clear tonight so I’ll try a stat test to see how it looks..
  13. Ok, I’ll try this am I best waiting until night time and looking at the moon or something and seen when it’s at best focus and adjust from there. Would different objects come into focus at different points? i noticed when I take out the collimating. cap and turn it and put it back in the the collimation is off so it could be an issue with the cap as well .
  14. Yeah it when I turn the focuser it moves a bit it’s doesn’t go completely out. It might go out to the edge of the circle and back in again each full rotation.
  15. Got a little case for my eyepieces off amazon.. Going camping next week and hoping for at least one clear sky, so wanted something to keep them altogether and safe. Im very pleased with it.. might try secure a pocket at the front to keep my pocket sky atlas in but I’ll see if that works out, something to work on while it’s cloudy out..
  16. No you replied to what I had posted first, I edited then , so I think you replied just as I had edited it.
  17. There’s a bit of play but not much doesn’t take it out of collimation. Yes just checked that each 360 degree turn of the focuser and it comes back into collimation.
  18. So I received my collimation cap. This is the image I see when I look through the focuser on sky watcher heritage 130p.. I initially thought it was out of whack but when I turned the focuser fully in I think it looks good. Would I be right in saying it doesn’t need collimation going by the attached picture? First pic is when I didn’t have the focuser knob twisted in fully and looks slightly off but second is with it twisted in fully and looks ok would people agree??
  19. Thanks Gavin. By premium Cheshire is that the red one on flo? I might just go with the cap so to start with and see how it looks. Thanks again everyone for your help, this really is a great forum for help and advice..
  20. Thanks for all the info Deathwarpedup, ill have a look through youtube and reviews online. I'm still leaning more towards the individual eyepieces. For Collimation would this work for the sky watcher heritage 130p? I don't see the short ones on FLO https://www.firstlightoptics.com/other-collimation-tools/astro-essentials-cheshire-collimating-eyepiece.html There's also this? https://www.firstlightoptics.com/other-collimation-tools/rigel-aline-collimation-cap.html Would either of them work for collimating, and also which would make it easiest for me.. and do i also need a a set of allen keys going by instructions online, typical i say ive been looking at a set of allen keys laying around the house the last 3 years, and when i actually go looking for them they are no where to be found.
  21. Those where the two i was planning on and have in the basket but said id double check with people here first. Are those zoom ones good, i thought i had read some dodgy reviews on the zoom eyepieces? I like the idea of having the seperate eyepieces, but the zoom would probably be handier. It would be stretching the budget a bit, but if people think its a better option then the seperate eyepieces i might look into it a bit more.. How would i know if it would be too heavy for the scope or not?
  22. Hi, I have a skywatcher heritage 130p, i currently have the stock eyepieces and 8mm BST Starguider and Vixen PL 30 mm and a Badarr Q2.25 barlow..(loving both the BST and vixen, haven't really used the Barlow much yet) I'm heading to a dark sky reserve area in two weeks(hoping for clear skies, but its Ireland so i could end up disappointed) Im looking at buying either a 5mm, 12mm or 18mm BSTs. Going to buy two, which two these wold be best for my next purchase would the 3.2mm be too much for this scope. I want to look at saturn and Jupiter as i haven't seen them yet due to having no clear skies since lockdown ended , but also look for some DSO( i know they won't be great in this scope, but i found M92 and M13 a few nights out my garden and was fixated on them for hours, so i think i might be easily pleased in this regard, ). Which two would you recommend for this scope or is there any other eyepieces i should consider. Also i was going to look into getting a chesire Collimator, to check before i go on the trip and also when i get there as scope will be in the car. i think i saw mentioned in a thread that you need a shore chesire for this scope, but couldn't fine the thread again. Any recommendations for one? I saw people saying laser ones as well but then read you hd to collimate them as well which kind of scared me of them. Any advice on either questions is greatly appreciated, thanks.
  23. Thanks everyone for your recommendations I’ve ordered the pocket sky atlas and a head torch.
  24. Thanks everyone for all your suggestions really appreciate it.. I’ll definitely print off some of those free ones and use them until the pocket sky atlas arrives.. I’m near the city so don’t have great skies but just want to get used to trying to find things..there’s a Gold tier dark sky reserve about 2 hrs from me so once restrictions are lifted and there’s a clear night I want to be ready to go. Which can be few and far between in Ireland.. i see that telescope express sell red torches for 23euro are they a thing you could buy cheap anywhere or is it worth spending The few euro on them. Shipping is 18euro for the book so trying to pick up something else as well to make the shipping cost worth it.. a compass prob wouldn’t be a bad idea either would it, currently using compass on my phone but that’s probably bad when looking at the phone and then trying to look at dark sky.
