  1. Absolutely fantastic mate I only dream about taking photos like this.
  2. Amazing for a smartphone camera! What a long way we have come from our 0.9MP flip phones!
  3. WOW, simply WOW. That is genuinely absolutely fantastic, I work on ships and you only get that on a perfect night deep sea somewhere very far north and you have at your feet!
  4. I usually prefer deep space pictures but WOW that 1st place pic, it's absolutely stunning, a rainbow of stars, it must have taken ages to get that right! The 2nd picture is absolutely incredible as well, beautiful colours and no bluring even though non guided, bet he thought he'd one for sure! The 3rd one is quite good as well, quite clear for a 30s exposure. Top draw Gentlemen/Ladies
  5. I may have a wonder over to this be one of my first meets. Got a skywatcher 150pds with a few mods on a modded EQ5 mount. Be nice to see folk and get some advice, every days a learning day especially with this stuff!
  6. I'm fairly new to all this, so I could be wrong. However I am a marine engineer and my inner engineer says that yes it is absolutely still needed. Unless you have the entire telescope in a sealed environmentally controlled room ( I doubt your dome is ) your still going to get dew. So your initial instinct is correct (In my opinion) keep using it Hope that helps somewhat. PS- I'd be interested to see pictures of your dome. Always liked that idea!
  7. Thanks for your reply and comment about the picture. I was a tad aggressive with the unsharp mask but certainly getting there, a big learning curve getting the right camera settings etc. Yes I understand it's absolutely huge which is why it's annoying me not being able to find it. You could be correct I could be looking straight through it. I think one of the problems is it's very close to a local obstruction and I have to setup in a different location to normal so that throws me off a little. Perhaps I shall persist abit longer. Any suggestions for any other deep sky objects that should be relatively 'easy' to find? J
  8. No not yet. I'm currently in the process of adding them. Perhaps I didn't explain it very well. I'm currently planning on using (making or buying) a astro EQ controller. This should give me a wider set of options for the future
  9. After another night trying and failing to find the andromeda galaxy, I'm officially calling it "fake" haha Well that's what flat earthers do when they can't understand why something is happening, sorry that's another subject that annoys me, bloody flatards...... anyway I must be doing something wrong, from talking to @nightfisher it should be fairly visible, especially on a night like tonight It looks like a carpet of stars tonight it's absolutely beautiful, i'm just frustrated at my inability to find what is essentially a massive galaxy. Think I may need a session with someone that can find it. I'm absolutely positive I am looking in the right area, skymap, sky walk 2, solarium and every instrument I have says I'm in the right place but can only see stars. On a good note I did manage to get some good views of a double star while messing around
  10. Hello all, Thanks for all your help so far. I am getting there, learning both the scope, mount and my camera. I don't seem to have an issue finding, our moon or the larger planets. I am however having a very hard time finding deep sky objects. I was doing my very best to find the Andromeda galaxy, using the SkyWalk2 app, but failed, infact I'm quite sure I captured about every star in the area of andromeda. It was very frustrating, I seem to be having trouble with any deep sky object, other than stars. I then moved back to capturing the moon, managed several close up shots and one half decent full disc image (well 5frames stacked - Image attached) So where am I going wrong with the deep sky stuff? doesn't seem to matter if i'm using a barlow lense connected to the DSLR or using it connected via my coma corrector at prime focus i can never find the deep sky stuff, the most success I have had is with a planetary nebula but even that was un identifiable even when processed. Is there any easy way or tips at finding the deep sky objects, I realise that they are the dimmer sometimes smudge looking objects, after reading and watching a few tutorials I am still finding it difficult to find anything. I am considering making a DIY go to for my EQ5. I have a fair amount of knowledge with regards to stepper motors, ardunio and encoders, there are plenty of tutorials out there. Does this sound like a good idea, it should allow me to be able to find things easier aswell as be a good upgrade for tracking objects for longer exposures. Thanks for your advice so far, I look forward to your comments J
  11. Thanks for your response. I don't have auto tracking nor a motorised mount....yet I assume that polar alignment would only affect this if motorised? I have come on a fair way since I made this post. I shall create another thread with another few problems im having Regards J
  12. Struggling to find 2" barlow lense for use with my coma corrector. and 2" camera nose piece. Should I use a 1.25" one above the coma corrector and then get another nose piece for my T ring?
  13. Thanks, you should have seen the first few photos of the moon. Looked like I'd taken it with a pin hole camera whilst riding on a roller-coaster haha. Still its nice to see an improvement especially over one night. makes it a tad more rewarding. Good to know about the barlow lenses , wasn't sure if they were compatible with the camera side of things or just strictly visual, I think I'll order a couple up perhaps a 1.5x and a 3x. So you think I require a focal reducer get a decent deep sky image? I would love to capture the Orion nebula or Andromeda. Heck to be honest any deep sky object that I can even get the slightest bit of detail in that wasn't a dot would be absolutely fascinating to me. My attempt at vega is absolutely shocking really, I mean look at this absolutely beautiful photo. taken with a similar scope & camera. All I get is blur, and this appears to be even more "zoomed in" *THIS IS NOT MY IMAGE*
  14. Trying to insert the pics into to post. Not having much luck! Ahh had to be a .png not a .TIFF
  15. Hello all, So this is a bit of a long one but hopefully everyone can help, I'll try keep it short. So last night was the first clear night in quite a while, as a result I was finally able to get my 105PDS setup and actually have a go. Bear in mind that this is my first proper telescope and other than a small session with @nightfisher I was making it up as I went along. I first looked for a planet to look at as I only have my 6mm eyepiece (yes i know..... 32mm inbound) all were either below the horizon or hidden by local obstructions. So i turned my attention to the moon, also hidden but just coming out from behind the small woodland near my house, this I could wait out. Whilst waiting I decided to try and look at/capture "a" star, No specifics here lol I think it was Vega. I was having major problems trying to get anything other than what looked like a picture of a bright disc with a small black bit in the middle, I assumed this to be the secondary mirror. After a while I noticed that the focuser had disconnected from the rack and pinion. So funny old thing once I connected this, things became much clearer. However I was still struggling to get a picture with my 450d and obviously the 6mm eyepiece was practically useless for this application. I started getting a tad frustrated at this point, best photo until this point is below, when finally the moon came into full view. So I got to having a look at that, this is when I started having some success, the eyepiece whilst designed for the more distant planets gave some absolutely amazing views of a close up moon, I attached my 450d and began taking several shots, playing with the ISO and exposure settings, as it was a full harvest moon I had to have a fast shutter speed and lowest ISO settings. With those I began to get what looked like passable photos, the best of which I have attached below. This leads me onto the questions; How can I get closer up pictures of the moon with my camera? I would love to have about double the magnification I had and make a mosaic of the moon. Stars and deeper sky objects - How can I get an even passable image here? I have read through all the how to's but am struggling a little there, I have no doubt that its practice makes perfect etc. If I try a long exposure shot (5secs+) the image becomes totally blurred, is this due to our rotation or something I am doing locally (Using a EQ5 mount). I believe this is my main problem as I was getting some incredible star shots with a 10s exposure but they were so blurred it looked like I'd taken it while trying to dance! Also as above, is there a way to increase the magnification levels when taking deep sky objects with a DSLR, perhaps using a Barlow lens or is that a no no, totally not sure here. So thanks for reading if you made it this far, as you can probably tell from what I've written and asked above I am a total and utter newbie to this. Hopefully with everyone guidance and wealth of knowledge on here I can become at least proficient at taking some great photos like I have seen on here The pictures attached are all single shots as I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing with stacks yet, I'm playing around as we speak. Many thanks all J Moonshot1.tif Starshoot1.tif
  16. That is exactly what I thought and the answer I was looking for! Perfect detailed response aswell. Thanks I only asked because I can across a thread talking about lenses for astrophotography however I think they meant astrophotography without a telescope. Thanks again
  17. Hello all, me again, So I've got my 150DPS on it's EQ5 mount with coma corrector and cannon T ring all set up for my 450d. Using it mainly as a visual setup at the moment (obviously without the coma corrector) but I'd like to take a venture into beginner astrophotography now I know the body fits on nicely and uses the scope as it's lens but is there any camera lenses that can be used in combination with the scope and camera? Or is it best to stick with the body only ? I know that may sound like a silly question but I've seen conflicting accounts when looking so far but that may be my lack of understanding. Thanks all. Couldn't have got to this point without people's help J
  18. Managed to pick up a 450d for £50 very happy indeed shutter count 3000ish
  19. I'm inexperienced at this but have just gone trough a similar process to find my scope . As above It's really a personal choice. Do lots of research, youtube is a great place to start and this forum is an absolute treasure trove of information. 100% read up more on the various types of telescope. and decide if your going to use it at some point for astrophoyography as you'll want one that's designed for astrophotography. Have a read through my threads made over the last few days on here they should help. My budget was somewhat larger than yours but I was after a larger scope and a EQ5 mount, small budget means nothing really if you use it correctly. I came across some absolute fantastic deals whilst I was searching around. Theres a 130mm reflector on a go to mount on Ebay for £280. I mean it doesn't get much better than that for what your after by the sounds of it. If theres a 130mm out there for that you can bet you'll find a smallish refractor for that aswell I know its not much but hopefully that helps and saves you a bit of time, as someone who is new also I know it can be a tad overwhelming with all the options. Just remember your money, your choice. Its quite a personal decision to make as it needs to be right for your needs and surroundings J
  20. Bloody hell that's a great photo! I seem to be commenting that a lot! Your signature is going to be running out of room for trophies!
  21. Great picture! Fantastic clarity/sharpness at that magnification!!
  22. What incredible timing! I like this a lot. Different from the norm as well! Great picture! I find myself wanting to look at the moon more and more. Something I was never too interested in before
  23. Looks like its the 450 then! Thanks all. I'll get bidding! Thanks for all your replies its a great community on here. Best forum I have come across in all of my hobby's ever if I'm honest
