  1. Hi, I have a AZ-GTi mount and going around in circles trying to find something to use on it for wider field observing, I have the 127 Skymax which is great, but I want a new telescope for the mount. I have heard good things about the StarTravel 102 which seems very cheap @ £165 on FLO, however the Evostar 80ED is affordable at £499. I just don't really understand the difference between the two. Can someone help and advise which is the better investment, mainly for observing, I don't own a camera but may get a zwo in the future. thanks!
  2. What do you use the 102 for? DSO? Thanks for your reply, decided against the 120.
  3. I struggle, whatever my intentions I find myself falling asleep at 9 and missing out. Sometimes I find myself awake really early, 4 am ish and will set up in my garden, otherwise it's a Friday or Saturday night and I have to force myself to stay awake.
  4. Bri!!iant. Sadly Devon has been under clouds all night (well all the hours I was awake)
  5. Thanks all. I've gone for AN, it includes 6 free back copies in PDF which will keep me going until I get my first one come tbrough.
  6. I don't have a camera yet, this is what I'm pondering, do I get the Star explorer (and a DSLR camera) or a zwo camera... I think I've missed the boat for Neowise, and the clouds look pretty thick for the next few days. I would like to try and photograph planets.
  7. Birthday approaching and as work starts to get back to normal and long train trips will be a weekly occurance, I was thinking of asking my other half for a magazine subscription. It seems in the UK the two main choices are Astronomy Now and Sky at Night, but which is the better especially for a beginner?
  8. I've never really been tempted to take a step into what seems be the complicated and expensive world of astrophotography, partly because I can come on here and see amazing photos that you all have taken. Having seen Neowise this past week, I have become curious and wished I had a set up to take some photos. I am about to upgrade the tripod for my AZ-Gti mount and apparently it can also take the Star Adventurer. I've seen this kit mentioned in here very favourably. I am looking for some advice about wherever to invest in this, or perhaps the ZWO cameras which I think can just slot onto the 127mak and soon to buy Startraveler refractor on the AZ-GTi. Would welcome any advice and quidance. Thanks!
  9. Excuse me for bumping this topic. I have now sold my 250p dob, so have a little cash to spend. After speaking to FLO they have advised that if I upgrade from the standard tripod which came with my 127 AZ-GTi it would cope with the Startravel 120 (the stated weight limit of the AZ-GTi is 5kg, the 120 is 5.1kg. I am very curious about what other people have put on their Az-Gti mounts. Also I've never used a refractor before, what can I expect from the Startravel? What can it do which my 127 Mak cannot? Thanks !
  10. I may well be able to get my old one back as he doesn't use it. I love my little mak on the wifi I mount, I've never used a refractor so curious about the Startraveler scopes which I think may go on the same mount
  11. I got rid of a 200p dob to buy the one I've got now, and wish I hadnt..
  12. I have the SW 250p flexitube dob with Goto, which I barely use. it's size and weight being the main reasons. I find it difficult to move around and set up. I also have the Skymax 127 AZ GTi which I use a lot more, it's a cracking telescope. I aim to sell the dob, and use the £ to buy something else, either another tube for my AZ GTi mount, or something completely different. I know the weight limit is 5kg for the mount so options are limited. The nice people at FLO have suggested the celestron C6 SVCT, I was wondering if anyone here might be able to recommend something? I have never used a refractor before so wondering what scope (if any) would fit the mount. Or if there's a different scope and mount I could replace my dob with? Appreciate any guidance you can give.
  13. Thanks, can you post a link to where I can buy one?
  14. Morning! Well I’m in a field in Cornwall and using my new 127 Mak for what I intended, a grab and go for camping. Last night I had what I think is the best observing of Saturn I’ve ever had. I could even see a band around the planet. Proper “wow” moment and had a crowd around me in no time wanting to have a look! I am curious about what the best Eyepiece would be for this telescope for planetary viewing? I have: Super Plossl 25mm & 10mm (the 10mm is the one I had most success with last night) williams optics 6mm SPL starguider ED 18mm and 8mm is there anything I could add to this collection that would be particularly good with a 127 Mak? Ta
  15. Mucho gusto! I love BCN, amazing place. I have been many times, last time was for the Grand Prix.. The telescope you have is in my opinion one of the best, I had one, I loved it, and I miss it a lot! I hope you have lots of happy hours exploring the sky with it
  16. I live a few miles from Exmouth beach, I've been thinking about taking my brand spanky new grab-and-go 127 mak down for a night of observing with a flask of something hot.. Is there anything in particular I should be thinking about when setting up on the beach? It seems like a great place to have views without any trees etc in the way..?
  17. I've got the 250 flexitube with Goto and find it a bit of a pain to move around, heavy and awkward. So much so I've used it perhaps half a dozen times since I bought it new. I've just bought the SkyMax 127 mak AZ GTi WiFi as grab-and-go scope while I think about what I'm going to do with my Dobsonian..
  18. Morning! From a fellow beginner (well a couple of years but all of this is still pretty new to me) my first telescope was a manual dobsonian, I learned my way around the sky with it and the help of a startracker app on my phone. I really enjoyed that dobsonian! I got rid of it and bought a telescope with Goto and if I am honest, I struggled with the Goto, it's one thing more to worry about, with the power pack etc. To this day I really miss my manual dobsonian, so much I am thinking of replacing my 250 Dob which has Goto for a 200p manual Dob.. I've just bought a 127 mak that has a WiFi AZ mount, and I have found it much easier than the Goto, I would recommend the WiFi version and the SynScan app to anyone as it is just so easy to use and very portable, the viewing of planets through it have been very good. I guess it also depends on what you want to observe. Don't give up, your frustrations will fade when you first see the planets, shadows on the moon etc. Do you live anywhere where perhaps you could meet up with someone else who has a dobsonian who could help you?
  19. A little place called Castlemorris which is about 5 miles from Haverfordwest.
  20. I was thinking of the refractor for more DSOs and the wider field, for when not just looking at planets. I am impressed with the Mak, I am not sure what I was expecting, but the detail I saw on Jupiter last night was better than I've ever seen through my 200 or 250 dob. I'm looking forward to taking it away on a few trips and may pop to Exmouth Beach at the weekend if there's clear skies. It really provides a bit of freedom that I've always wanted, but never had with my Dobs. Twists and turns is right! I change my mind and back again multiple times per day about what to do with my current Dob.. That I've really missed my old 200p manual dob a lot is telling me to get it back.. I know the 250 with all the Goto is a cracking telescope, I've just not got on too well with it..
  21. Yes I think I will be selling my big 250 dob with Goto, with the money perhaps buy a 4" frac to go onto the AZ GTi mount and go back to a manual 200p skyliner. Then I've got everything for home or trips away.
  22. Ok, so thankful for a couple of hours of clear skies last night using the new 127 Mak, and I had perhaps the best observing I’ve ever had of Jupiter. Much more detail than I’ve had through my dob! Very happy with it, and the SynScan app, it’s definitely a keeper!
  23. Thank you everyone for your advice, it’s been really useful! Well I picked up the Mak today, it was very easy to set up and the SynScan app on my phone seems to be controlling it brilliantly. Clear skies permitting I’ll be using it this week and weekend. I may well buy the 4” frac that fits on the mount too! Before I decide one way or another about what to do with my 250 dob i’m going to get it out again this week and have a go at understanding it a bit more. If the WiFi control works for me, buying the WiFi dongle that retrofits the dob might be an option. I’ve already asked my mate if I can have the manual 200p dob back anyway!
  24. Thanks a lot. I wonder if both will fit on the same mount. I’ll give FLO a call in the morning..
