  1. Well I have enjoyed this telescope very much but for financial reasons I need to sell it. Any idea what I should ask for it? Its in great shape and I think I collimated it correctly using a cheshire cat. I also bought a 4mm eyepiece and that was crazy looking at the moon! The scope itself just needs a bit of paint job. The mirror appears to be in great shape (I rinsed it very carefully with distilled). The mount is home made and not in great shape. Other than that what should I ask for this scope?
  2. Thanks guys I just bought a cheshire collimator and a 4mm eyepiece, although thats pushing mag probably to the limit I want to at least try it. 70x was impressive without any collimation and the dust all over the primary..but I'd like to see alot closer than 70x especially on the moon
  3. Thanks I'm actually pretty excited about it. I just cleaned the mirror and it has very few imperfections, really just a few very light smudges that I think I didnt get with the soap, and a small light scratch in the very center that I think probably where Id put a centering mark anyway. I actually did a test on the moon last night and it looked really nice. I guess the magnification was about 60X since the eyepiece was 20mm? I want to try a higher magnification..I'm thinking a 5mm would be like 500X but probably be way too much unless I'm on the perfect night in the middle of the desert. So should I shoot for 300x for a "clear night in the suburbs" sort of thing? Can you tell me more about the spider condition? What about it looks bad? The dirtiness or is it bent or something?
  4. Got this at a garage sale for $25. Don't know anything about telescopes. Excited to use it! It was $25. Trying to learn about whats what. Noteworthy details: Appears to have a 10" diameter mirror Mirror has alot of writing engraved on it: Side: Cave Optical Co # 19694157 F/5.5 54 7/8" F.L. April 8, 1969 Refgood (not sure what this says...seems to be one word) # 7048 Back: Signature reads: allen L. Hull F/5.5 On side of main tube there are labels that say: TR 10 IN. 5 1/10 WAVE 4/10 SEC MAG 14.7 Eyepiece says 20mm PLOSSL Looks like there is a telrad finder Tube is about 60" long Mirror is 1.75" thick. Came with a big counterweighted stand that pivots in two axis, made of galvanized pipe welded together..didnt take pics of it. Its not bad but its heavy and needs some TLC (rotted foam, wood) Couple questions: Why does it say 5 1/10 WAVE? Seems like a weird number. Shouldnt it just be 1/10 WAVE? If I can only get one more eyepiece, what should I get? I'd like to look at deep space things and planets. I do regualrly go to the desert so its possible I could setup in a very dark place on a clear night. The mirror is covered in dust and ash (So cal fires I bet)..how can I clean it? Whats this mirror worth? Looks like cave optical co has a website..I checked the registry and this mirror isnt in there yet. Looks like this might have been one of their telescopes, because the tube seems to be made of fiberglass with metal ends which looks like the ones on their site. So I think this is an Astrola 10" but not sure what model. The tube appears to be fiberglass with metal ends and the mirror mount matches what I see on the Astrola page. The foam in the mirror mount is made of old pieces of belt and probably HVAC pieces. I'd like to redo all that properly. Also the mount for the scope itself is heavy and awkward..I'd like to make it easier to use, any good designs out there? I am a machinist and have a CNC machine shop and welder so I could make pretty much anything Thanks for any help!
