  1. Heya, I took a stab at the Venus & Jupiter conjunction this morning. I couldn't do it in the dark due to my tree line not showing things under 14~17 degrees of elevation so I had to chance a daytime imaging session for this fun phenomena. I tried in 742nm infrared first but couldn't make out any bands on Jupiter. Yet, when I looked at it in 500nm or 600nm with a green or red filter, I saw bands fairly well. So I just imaged the two planets together in red wavelength since my morning seeing is ok, but not great, with some sunlight involved. I stacked 2800 frames to build up enough signal to noise ratio to balance the brightness of the two plants in post since Venus is significantly brighter. My image scale is 0.59 arc-seconds per pixel, so I think I ended up with a 0.39 degree separation of the two. I enjoyed seeing them in the telescope visually first and then imaged for a little bit to see if it was possible. I managed to get hints of brightness of Io (right) and Ganymede (left) and balanced the brightness of their `smudges' to be able to at least detect them and their relative positions. I had to do extensive clean up and masking to get a dark background as I had some clouds and the original exposure was more of a very light grey tone of the day sky. The pixel positions are real for my time frame of 0833 eastern time from Florida with any differences beings secondary to stacking results. I captured this in narrowband with a 150mm F8 refractor and an IMX253 sensor (3.45um pixels, mono) using an Astronomik red imaging filter, so the native image is black & white due to imaging in daytime conditions with a single filter wavelength. I was going to attempt color, but figured it wouldn't work out and didn't want to lose more time. My daughter and I enjoyed seeing it in the eyepiece as well as on the screen this morning.   3. Heya, Florida has been a hot mess of storms, I've seen very little sky. Tonight I had a small opportunity that I only noticed while doing some yard work near nightfall since that's the only time it was under 100F degree heat and wasn't raining. I still had to content with lots of clouds, but I managed to get a little data in a sucker hole that floated through and seeing ended up being decent enough for this image scale to work out ok. I'm still trying to get color results that are consistent but I find they're more difficult the less illuminated the disc is. Hurricane / Tropical Storm Elsa has left us a swampy mess and we're still getting clouds & rain daily, not to mention roads are still flooded out here from it, a week plus later. Silly Florida... RGB: B&W: My Astrobin link for full resolution and information: https://astrob.in/5apme6/B/ Equipment: T.S. 200mm F6 Quartz Newtonian Baader MPCC Mark III QHY183C (IMX183) color camera 200 frames stacked from 1800 frames total capture (I had a very brief window and that was it) In FireCapture, for the color, I try to aim for a histogram in the 70% range to avoid clipping highlights on crater rims, etc. I enabled channel balance sliders to manually adjust R, G & B values so that the histograms were more approximately close (I find this is key to being able to align the color channels later in post and not get super funky results). I raise the exposure and color from the dark image in post, since 200 frames is plenty to get plenty dynamic range and noise reduction on its own, if seeing is good. I was worried it wasn't enough to get any meaningful color other than wonky stuff. I did get some wonky stuff, but was close to the caramel brown & blues that I prefer to try to get. Much easier on fuller discs with more light. I have a soft limb (see screen shot below, the upper right limb) because it was too far to the edge of the sensor and started going past the coma corrected area (I didn't realize I wasn't centered on screen due to scrambling quickly with no time between clouds). So lesson learned there; the coma corrector works wonderfully but only if you stay within its corrected area which is not the full sensor at this focal-ratio and image scale. You can see in my last image the kind of clouds situation it was. I was mainly looking to see how soon I might be able to attempt Venus this season but was skunked on that so setup for lunar and waited for a pocket. After this, it was total cloud cover so I left the mosquito-bath and soup of humidity in Florida heat to its wild self and went inside. Very best,
  4. Heya, It's been a nasty few weeks here in Florida, the storming just hasn't let up until this afternoon in a solid 16 days straight of clouds and rain. I missed that last spot and missed out on some really great proms the past few days. Thankfully there's a new active region with a very interesting spot! AR2835 is pretty interesting because it doesn't have massive activity going on despite how it "looks" to us, and it's because it's magnetic polarity is very split and far apart, so there's no reconnections occurring resulting in flares (at least so far!). Lots of neat stuff going on in the inner spot with light bridges forming. These spots sprang into life over just around 2 days or so and are still going, so it will be nice to see them stick around for a disc face transit hopefully! I'll probably get rained out the next few days just because! B&W: Colored: Seeing Conditions: Not my typical, I had nothing for weeks. This evening was my first chance to even look at the sky nice the beginning of the month. So after 4pm Eastern Time, I had not expected good seeing, but it was good enough to attempt things with good transparency between large cumulus clouds dragging nice air flow patterns behind them. Lucky imaging prevailed despite my averages to allow high resolution in 0.8 arc-second peaks for the continuum and CaK imaging.   5. Heya, Been a nasty few days of weather, had small holes between the clouds this morning but seeing was pretty good, so I was able to grab quick data. There's a great prominence near AR2829 as it all rounds the limb, great active area. AR2832 has some nice plage and mottling with a filament near by. Overall low activity. I missed that great eruption due to work (and weather was bad anyways). And of course I'm not in the pathway of the partial eclipse from the other day. Alas! There is good news though, if you read on SpaceWeather a little article about the Terminator Event (let's hope its true!).   6. Heya, It rained yesterday and today is not much better, I saw a small moment this morning between big clouds and waited a few out and tried some fast imaging in sucker holes. I didn't bother measuring seeing as the clouds just make it a mess anyways. On the screen the seeing was good enough (1.3~1.4 arc-seconds at the least based on this image scale) for the image scale between clouds, so lucky imaging prevails. AR2827 is still fantastic, great penumbra now on that spot and its mottling and filaments are great. AR2829 has really woken up and went from being a disturbance to something nice too over night it seems, great long plage and mottling dragging behind it too. There's a nice grouping of prominences on the North Eastern limb, a couple of arches. Heya, Woke up to some decent skies this morning, the temperature delta was crazy, it was getting very hot this morning, already sizzling in the upper 80's heading into the 90's in direct sunlight. Scopes were hot to touch after just a few minutes in direct light before being pointed at the sun. Had to shade everything including myself. Seeing was highly variable today, with large temperature deltas I usually get bad seeing. Despite the SSM showing dreadful seeing conditions, looking on the screen at the live feed shows rapid peaks that were quite good despite the measurements coming back poor. I imaged through it with lucky imaging and managed to get some decent frames that were sub-arc-second out of a really bad average (see my seeing chart, its bad today). AR2827 is lovely, great mottling and filaments in the area despite being smaller sunspot. Added in some photosphere of the area. Seeing was hard on short wavelength so Calcium was done at a smaller scale and finished with some full discs in near UV & Calcium.   8. Heya, It was a cloud morning but between clouds there was rather good seeing. I took a snap shot of the seeing just to show how passing clouds can drag great seeing behind them. AR2827 has crown into a nice spot with a penumbra, not a big one, but lots of neat flowing material between the poles in the region and great mottling in the plage area. Not quite as dramatic in the photosphere, but lots of little pores trailing the main spot.   9. Heya, I should have gotten up early today, I did not expect that disturbance yesterday to become a monstrous sunspot today! It dwarfs anything we've seen since 2019 I think. Almost a great spot. Too bad it will now leave our view after tomorrow. We did some visual today and enjoyed seeing the spot near the limb in a white light view from a 120mm aperture scope, the big penumbra area of 2826 is impressive to see visually, not like the little spots we're used to. Quite a lovely region! Took a last minute stab nearly at sunset tonight to get an image of it before we packed in for the night.   10. Hey all, Finally had a day off work, seeing was pretty good this morning. AR2824 is such an active region, popping flares every day, and has a lovely surrounding area in the chromosphere with lots of mottling and interesting plage and filament tangles. The extent of the AR is really apparent in Calcium showing the bright faculae. The AR is being lead by an interesting new flux disturbance region that will round the limb soon (which may produce a really interesting view on the limb if it persists, such as potentially some loops!). Sigh, may I just say, it's extremely difficult and annoying to embed images here now, since I cannot simply post a BBCode image from my hosting platform(s) and instead have to post a link to it, that then must be fetched by the forum software or it will not display anything and break, and the forum constantly makes it difficult to space images so they are not hugging or sharing the same line. This is frustrating to post more than 1 image frankly. I try to share a lot, but this is really just making it take way too long when it's a simple process on other systems. Any advice for stream lined image posting (like being able to copy & past all my images in one go to allow this to be a faster process)? Or is this just how it is now? Very best,

Heya, I nasty storm cell swept through last night, but usually I have decent seeing after storms, so I woke up and went outside to a fairly high temperature delta from night to morning with gusts of wind, but seeing turned out to be good, so I attempted some high res imaging with a 200mm and 150mm and then finished my session with a 120mm moderate resolution imaging of the AR2824 near the limb and total session time was around 40 minutes for tri-band and two image scale captures. AR2824 has a lot more going on than the previous spot that just left our view around the limb, with a great mottling area and plage and it's throwing active small flares, would be great to see some long animations as things are moving quite a bit. My weather only lasted an hour and now its cloudy and going to rain, but storms are good around here.   13. Hi all, Stormed and rained so far this week, but this morning was clear, lower temps and pretty ok seeing conditions between gusts. AR2822 is still looking good with a nice penumbra around the spot in the photosphere and lots of interesting activity in the chromosphere and popping off little flares.   15. Heya, Well, it's been a hot minute for me, between horrible weather as summer comes in with storms and just a messy work schedule. Seeing has been horrible lately. I've done more visual than imaging the past 30+ days and today's the first day I've solar imaged in over 30 days due to weather here in Florida. Imagine that right? Sunny Florida. Pffft. Seeing was bad today, but it's the first clear evening I've had. I've had zero clear mornings when I was off, so today was a late attempt as seeing at least gets slightly better for me in my late evening before sunset, so today was around 18:30pm Eastern time for these captures. I was thinking I would totally miss imaging the great grouping of AR2818, AR2820 & AR2821 together, but at least got some data on them finally. Seeing was ranging from 1.2 arc-seconds to 4+ arc-seconds in waves, it was bad.   16. Heya, AR2808 is an interesting region, in HA it has a nice extensive plage and has filaments between the poles, but in the photosphere it's a tiny pore with not much else to see. Mean while, a smaller region that is now AR809 emerged and has a much smaller HA representation with a tiny plage and the poles are close together, yet in the photosphere it has a much bigger spot that is developing rapidly this morning (maybe it will grow larger and the poles separate a bit more to become a bigger region). It's a really great representation of the difference between the chromosphere and photosphere, and how there's always something to see in HA! The HA is high contrast by stacking two 1.7A blocking filters (from Apollo Lasky) with a single etalon to produce nearly double-stack performance in terms of suppressing the parasitic continuum.   17. Heya, Had another clear morning with fair seeing. Seeing was around 1.2 arc-seconds to 1.5 arc-seconds for most of this, it barely supported the 120mm aperture, but I wanted to get moderate-high resolution captures of the two AR's while they were still around and active before going back to work. There's a rather large prominence off the limb near AR2806 and the opposite limb has a great eruptive surge prominence region that was pretty active all morning that is rounding the Eastern limb. Might be interesting soon. PST etalon + double stacked 1.7A 8mm blocking filter tilted in a Skybender (thanks Apollo!) and 6A 5mm blocking filter.   18. Heya, It rained yesterday but was clear this morning today, so I had a chance to look at AR's 2806 & 2807. They're small active regions, with tiny sunspot pores, no visible penumbra developed on either, but lots of lovely plage and filament activity between their poles. Took a look at them in HA, CaK & the Photosphere with a 100mm aperture. Seeing was not great, it was spiking 1.5 to 2 arc-seconds, so the HA is sampled well but the CaK is under-sampled. The HA is higher contrast due to double stacking a custom 1.7A blocking filter (from Apollo Lasky) with a 6A blocking filter together in a Skybender, despite being a single stack etalon imaging train to get near double stack performance levels of contrast.   19. Heya, Woke up to fog, but was blessed with some good seeing and a clear sky this morning. I was able to get close to some limits with high resolution setup and after seeing deteriorated went to a moderate resolution setup for a wider field of view. I spent most of the time on AR2804 as it has evolved into a really interesting sunspot with a huge lovely penumbra with lots of fibrils and the plage around it has lots of great activity including minor flaring. Upper chromosphere and lower photosphere represented in 656nm and 600nm wavelengths to handle the seeing. Seeing was spiking to 0.8 arc-seconds this morning, so that's where I captured the 200mm data, and when seeing was closer to 1 & 1.2 arc-seconds I captured the 120mm data. I was able to piece together a short time lapse of AR2804 from the 200mm data to see how rapid the plasma was moving and represented real time of only about 4 minutes.   21. Hey all, I finally got a morning with minimal clouds, and fairly good weather. It's been dreadful for months. Seeing was decent, not supreme, but quite good, getting into sub-arc-second seeing all morning and averaging a few peaks in the 0.8 arc-second range which allowed some higher resolution attempts. I didn't get to the maximum of the potential of the aperture, but was getting decent data at least which is better than I've had in a while with the storm conditions. I left the high res stuff soft processing wise. The big prominence field is gorgeous. The AR's are crackling with small flares and activity, some were so fast they changed in moments while watching.   22. Hey all, I am starting to really have an interest in saturated lunar surfaces. As much as I generally enjoy B&W high resolution imaging of surfaces, I also find myself just as pleased looking at highly saturated surfaces too, despite being lower resolution. I really am drawn to deep browns and purples. Anyhow, while this may not be everyone's cup of tea, I'm trying to learn to align the color as close as I can to keep getting consistent results before buying a large color sensor to work with further. So for now, I'm practicing with the only color sensor I have, the 224MC. C8 Edge HD ASI224MC + Astronomik L filter Undersampled on purpose to get a wider FOV as seeing was ok, but I wanted more surface to see color with. 120 seconds at 150FPS and kept the best 400 on each one. Aligned the RGB in R6. Processed (sharpening) the luminance data in IMPPG Layered processed outcome as luminance layer over color data for final presentation via CS5.1 Auto-color aligned channels in CS5.1 after already doing it in RS6 for what seems to be a better result maybe I'm hoping to find an IMX183 cooled color sensor soon to match best to my C8 Edge based on what I'm experiencing so far.   23. Heya, These storms are relentless. Sigh. I was able to get a little window this late morning but could only get a bit of data before the rain came and shut it down for the day. It's amazing that when you want just 1 hour of uninterrupted sky time, you get 30 seconds here and there, once a week it seems. So much for "sunny Florida." Anyhow, interesting filaprom still on the south western limb, a new AR 2804 is forming in front of 2803, there's a small sunspot that is a bit larger than a pore and trying to develop a penumbra and umbra perhaps. Lots of neat activity going on in the plages areas in each active region.
