  1. Funnily enough I was just going the old post titled EQ3-2 strip down which I followed originally. It just occurred to me as the bearings on the 3-2 are plain bushes, would there be any merit in lapping them in with a bit of fine metal polish and then clean and lubing them.
  2. Haha, poor English. What I meant to say was, would my existing goto from my EQ3-2 fit an EQ5 but having just had a look on the FLO site it would appear not. I passed my 3-2 tripod on many years ago after someone very kindly gave me an EQ5 tripod so I though it might help to get an EQ5 mount to go with it. To be honest for visual observation I'm perfectly happy with my present setup, my only gripe is the lack of build quality on the mount as I always struggle with balancing due to the friction levels inherent in the design. This is despite a complete strip down, clean and re-lube, although I have to say I managed to get the backlash to an acceptable level Oh well nevermind
  3. Thanks for that info, I'll leave it for now then. As I already had the eq5 tripod I thought the eq5 mount would be an improvement over the eq3-2.
  4. I currently have an EQ3-2 mount on an EQ5 tripod and I wondered if the bolt on GOTO would fit an EQ5mount. I can't justify a large expense but would like a mount that is a bit more stable.
  5. I've come home now but next time I go to my holiday home I'll check. Though I'm fairly sure there is a black adaptor between the draw tube and the new self centring holder. I would appreciate it if someone could post a pic of the correct way to mount the self centring holder. So I've just gone in my loft to my box of astro bits n pieces and what do I find, the original 1.25 holder and the original 2" holder. No wonder it wouldn't focus. What a tool!
  6. Hi Peter, no not tried a Barlow yet. Prior to my hamfisted bungling all was fine. I'm assuming at infinity the focuser should be racked in pretty close. The only thing altered is the addition of a Revelation Astro centring adaptor to replace the standard 1.25 holder but I seem to think it was about the same height. I'll try to rectify this but if all else fails I'll go back to the original eyepiece holder and see if the new holder is the problem or if I need an extension.
  7. I tried to use my explorer 150p to let my grandson observe the moon and found I could not achieve focus. For reasons I won't bore you with I have not used my scope since I dismantled it to flock the tube. It's obvious I have gone wrong in the reassembly as I could only achieve focus by holding the eyepiece above the focuser. I have adjusted the primary as near to the end of the tube as possible but to no avail so run out of ideas I'm afraid.
  8. As I say I'm a non techie, I have windows 7 on a laptop could I get a copy of the installation files from that and if so how?
  9. The Asus has fairly limited performance, wouldn't it struggle with Windows 10.
  10. Forgot I've got Sharpcap installed as well so if I go down the Linux route I would want to continue with the same or similar.
  11. I have an Asus eee pc1001px netbook which to be honest I forgot I had. it has Stellarium, Registax and Collimate03 ? installed For telescope maintenance, Polar aligning and the little bit of wecam imaging I do It's quite sufficient. Regarding XP I am obviously concerned about the security aspect and have considered installing a newer version of Windows. But then I wondered if I could install a Linux system to do the same job. I am absolutely not a techie but any advice would be appreciated.
  12. Hi Janine and welcome to SGL. I use Nikon 8x42s, they are nice binoculars and I think give a lot of bang for your buck.
  13. Oops perhaps that should read honing not lapping
  14. I've just used Badger's excellent service guide to work on my mount and I feel there has been an improvement. There is still some friction which I suspect is due to the plain metal bearing surfaces. Do you think there would be any merit in lapping the surfaces to try and smooth them. I was thinking of solvol autosol or even ordinay brasso.
  15. I take your point re the weight with my setup. I use a RDF but it is useful to have a real finder and my current 6x30 straight finder isn't easy to use thanks to a neck injury.
  16. I'll most likely look on astroboot or buy sell as one's pennies don't stretch very far. it'll sit on top of a 150p on an EQ3-2 mount so I think it needs to be fairly small and light. Can anyone recommend a scope to look out for. Or would it just be cheaper to get a 9x50 scope, I'm looking for RACI ideally.
  17. Having read one or two posts which suggest that a budget 70 or 80mm frac can be turned into a decent finder scope, I was wondering how you achieve the cross hairs for targeting.
  18. Could anyone tell me how far away an object needs to be to be considered parallax error free. I would like to adjust my polarscope alignment & cone error during the day but I don't know haw far away my target should be.
  19. Doh! maybe I should read more than just page 1 before jumping in with my size 10's
  20. On a Newt could you leave the main aperture cover on and just take the little cap off to reduce the light or would that not work?
  21. I'm about to attempt some webcam imaging with a modded Xbox 360 through Sharpcap and I've heard about adjusting something called gain but I don't appear to have it as an option only brightness. Is it only certain webcams that have this?
  22. At this price I could buy another to have a go at imaging and then have one for each duty. Although if I use a film cannister instead of a proper nose piece I might be able to make it fit into the focuser but also over the polar scope. Experiment time
  23. I just ordered a couple of livecams off Fleabay to use for polarcam & collimating duties and I wondered if it was possible to use just one for both polar & collimation. I'm thinking one needs the plumbing fitting and the other needs a proper nose piece so I could foresee problems. Am I right in thinking that imaging needs the webcam lens to be removed and collimation needs it to be still in place?
  24. I've just posted a wanted ad for an EQ5 tripod to try and stiffen up my EQ3-2 mount but I wondered if my mount would also fit on a Celestion CG5 tripod as that will help open up my chances of getting something suitable within my budget.
  25. Thanks for the advice. I think there will be a few 5s and 6s coming on to the market particularly as more serious imagers upgrade to eq8.
