No worries. I found the first edition really helpful. Looking forward to getting the second edition too. Will be good to learn about the new astro features in there :)

  3. My husband known here to some of you as Freddie passed away earlier this morning, He knew this day would come  because he had been very ill for some time. He wanted me to make a last post for him in the event that it did. He is at peace now and with the stars he loved so much.

  4. I’ve been so spoilt with clear skies recently that I feel a little bewildered looking up at cloud filled sky tonight!

Thanks Iain. Had a great night at Seething last night. Will write up a report when time allows. It’s been a great summer for observing so far :)

  5. Just completed my first ever collimation of a secondary mirror. Was nervous but was actually quite straight forwards. Collimation looks spot on now. All I need is some clear skies so I can do a star test!

For sure. It wasn’t a big deal at all. Looking forward to seeing how much difference it makes at the eyepiece. I’d noticed the views weren’t as sharp as I felt they should be recently.

  6. My ZWO ADC arrived today, so managed to test it out on Venus earlier on. Worked great from what I could see. Need to try it out on Jupiter and Mars for some more tests with it, but so far looking good! :)

Cool. I’ll keep an eye out your reports on the ADC and your images too, of course :)

The cloud is terrible and it’s put me in a vicious circle. I buy new equipment, weather gets cloudy, I’m bored, I buy new equipment.... ;)

Nice one. I'd never heard of these until recently. Were you using it visually or for imaging? Sounds like there's some improvement from them but not a miracle cure.

  8. Managed to see Venus with my bins for about 15mins last night after sunset, and also Jupiter with my 4SE Mak for about 30mins at just gone midnight last night too. Seeing was poor due to conditions and altitude, but nice to be able to see something through the cracks in the clouds! :)

Nice one, Gus. Sometimes it's nice to just see something when the weather isn't cooperating :)

  10. Astronomy is like sex in that you spend much more time thinking about it than actually doing it

:laughing4: Good point. At least Astronomy sessions are measured in HOURS in most cases!

  11. I should moan about the weather more often. Been terrible all day but just now I've been treated to the most transparent and steady summer sky I've ever experienced over our back yard in July. I could see M31 with the naked eye even though it was still quite low in the east. Similarly I could see M33 through my big bins but hand held. Vega, Altair and Deneb were so bright that the summer triangle looked 3d. I'm pretty sure that bins and averted vision allowed me to spot the tiny blur of M57 in Lyra. Could also see M71 in Sagittarius and M27 in Vulpecula. Along the way I picked up nice views of the big two globular clusters in Hercules, the Coathanger and the double cluster in Perseus.

In my bins I could follow the Milky Way right down to the rooftops on our southern boundary. Generally interesting fuzziness in this area of the sky just disappears into the murk and light pollution but not tonight, I could easily pick out all the Messiers  down through Scutum  and Ophiuchus until the roof tops met Sagittarius.

Finished off a rewarding 35 minutes with a nice meteor and several bright satellites.

No telescope action and no photography but what a great, if breathtakingly short, night of old fashioned stargazing.

Hope you all enjoyed some clear skies where ever you are.

Night night from George happy in bed Lowestoft.

I saw a cracking meteor in the region of Aquarius last night. Briefly thought it was a firework as it was so bright

  12. don't you just hate waiting for it to get dark.

I know what you mean, Charl. It's forecast for some clear skies this evening and it's all I can think about!

  13. You know it's Summer when... You wait for it to go dark, set your telescope up and realise that it's light again.

haha so true! I've had a couple of nights of wondering why everything was starting to looked washed out and then realised it was because the sun was coming up!

Happy Solstice to you, charl! Enjoying the warm nights but will nice when telescope time doesn't mean only getting 4/5 hours sleep :)

  15. Wondering why I bought a telescope in June?

    1. Littleguy80

      Littleguy80

I don't really fee like the light night's are holding me back. It's just picking the right objects to look at. M13, the double cluster and M11 all make for good viewing plus it's not freezing cold! I'm sure once it gets darker there'll be lots more to see but I'm enjoying my summer viewing :)

  16. It's a great feeling when the weather forecast is wrong and the skies are clear. Nebula in Auriga and great views of Jupiter. Definitely need to add a UHC filter and some medium/low eyepieces to my collection though

    1. Littleguy80

      Littleguy80

If you've got a UHC filter then give this a look:

       http://www.prairieastronomyclub.org/filter-performance-comparisons-for-some-common-nebulae/

It lists a whole load of nebula and which filter gives the best results on it. There's enough in there for months/years of viewing! Happy hunting :)

I was using a SkyWatcher Explorer 130. I was mainly looking at NGC 1893 which I've since discovered is actually an open cluster. I did also look at IC405 but it was difficult to see much with the eyepieces I have. I only have the stock 25mm eyepiece for a finder and then it's a jump to an 8mm BST or barlow the 25mm. I'm planning on the 12mm and the 18mm which should be much better suited to nebula, especially with a UHC filter
