  1. I have reverse aperture fever. I have a 16" f4 dob and bought a 12" f4 dob and have now bought a 4.5" f4.3 newtonian and am loving it. I still have the others but the little guy is so dinky.

      £23...that's brilliant!! Ok, I'm outta here... :)

LOL. I can see the benefits of fracs and why people like them, I just prefer newts and see no reason to change my view. I am easily confused and the left right reversal of fracs drives me mad.

I swap my eyes...this works for me :)

  2. Back on the giro.....just bought a Giro and pillar mount. Really glad to have this set up again.

it does Jules but I have had to sell quite a bit of gear (mostly non-astro old moth stuff) to get to the £900 selling price!

Don't worry Jules, it's not a frac! Believe it or not, another dob

Lovejoy is easily visible in my 7x36 bins. If you get clear sky, even with the moon it's very bright.

  5. I'm becoming a bit of a solar addict. I can give it up any time though.

It's only for visual... Yeah I've heard that before. :)

Sounds like a great combo! We have definitely had more use from our solar gear than the night time astronomy over the last year.

No seriously i have (literally) no interest in imaging unless you count sketching :0)

  6. We've got to Jupiter season again. Last night was superb. Often I am unable to bring myself to look at anything else when Jupiter is prominent.

Had my best EVER views of Jupiter last night using full aperture!

      Naemeth

Jupiter is lovely when it's out. Mind you, so is the Moon, I'm really enjoying it in a way I never did with my Heritage.

    4. Moonshane

as hinted at by Mike above, I use full aperture when possible on all three scopes. often with the 16" though the view is better masked off to 170mm. if I can use full aperture though I do. that certainly allows for more moons to be detected with e.g. Saturn. also the detail when the seeing pops is just staggering.

  7. One out, one in. I have sold a scope (130mm Newt) to buy another one (80mm f11 frac) for solar use. Must be losing my grip - FRACS????

i use my frac for solar and its great Shane.just wondering,do you plan to PST mode it or its gonna be white solar??

    3. Luke

      Luke

Those fracs sure do work nice for solar :) The detail you can see in white light with a Herschel wedge is bonkers.

    4. Moonshane

      Moonshane

Nah just going to use it as a white light solar scope plus maybe doubles etc as a change from my 6" f11. it will mainly sit on the giro opposite the Lunt 50 when this arrives.

If you guys from the Peak Party are reading this I did a little asking and found tha the best clear skies for your guys will be around 4am this 'evening', that is Saturday early. Should be great to catch some of those winter joys. Hope you all have a great time.

    3. Moonshane

cheers guys. here's hoping things settle down soon, my brother in law is bringing his scope later this week (or maybe moving one of mine for me) I think if the weather looks any good for the asteroid pass.

  12. Made a dob base for my 12" f4 yesterday. Just need to fit the bearing surfaces and the finish and I can finally use the thing!

    1. estwing

      estwing

If it matches anything else that is conjured from the Moonshane laboratory, it is going to be amazing...

    3. Moonshane

      Moonshane

Fitted all bearings and a couple of coats of black stain. Just adding the clear top coats (x3) and it will be usable at last.

  13. Finally managed to detect M74 last night. It's tricky from home but found it!

    1. Qualia

      Qualia

Nice one, Shane. I managed it a few weeks back but no more than a smudge. No detail as such.

    3. Moonshane
