  1. I fully appreciate the 'study the wiki until you are familiar with it' advice, but man, is it confusing!!! There are options on top of options on top of options! Some seem to have been good choices in the past but because the wiki is a collection of information over time it is difficult to tell exactly what is relevent now... Having said that, some of the comments on this thread have been very useful (and that photo!) and may well be enough to convince me to take the plunge. Knowing there is up-to-date advice available on the forum will be a big help. Thanks all! Ady (apologies for the thread hijack, OP)
  2. As a rule it is way too fiddly and expensive to do on a small scale... There are options if you want to have a go "Best Filament Extruders to Build or Buy | All3DP" https://m.all3dp.com/2/6-best-filament-extruders-to-build-or-buy/ NB - apols James, typed at the same time 😉
  3. I hope he only earthed himself! Realised as I typed my first response that a warning was probably in order for a public post, but at the same time didn't really think you'd need it 😉
  4. I soon cracked open the psu on my ender 5 and mounted an external quiet 120cm pc 12v fan (with 24v-12v step-down). Much better! (if you're confident with not electrocuting yourself when messing with electronics...)
  5. That is a fantastic capture with the equipment you've used - bravo!
  6. In my experience the iss is much brighter than other satellites. I assume there are a number of factors such as size and lower earth orbit, but its always a bright 'un 😉
  7. Yup, the ISS was doing a flyover at that time. To check, I used the Sky Safari mobile app, set it to 20:54 yesterday and searched for the ISS (in fact I used have notifications set so it would tell me when there was a flyover). Obviously you could use Sky Safari to check real-time as well 😉
  8. Brilliant, Loretta!* That should do it 😁 It's not you at all - it's all those people buying new equipment 😂 Ady (* obligatory Monty Python reference)
  9. "So I am a Jonah, no doubt." @teoria_del_big_bangdon't be like that - we're all scientists and don't believe in any of that superstitious mumbo-jumbo. "But I will try again" - actually, just to disprove the theory, would you mind not? I've got my fingers crossed that the next one goes ahead and I'd rather you didn't jinx it... 😁 😂 🤣 😂 But more seriously, Star Parties are great - been to the SGL one and the Bwylch Astro Camp and they were a hoot. I think this forum is such a great place because we haven't fallen into that modern 'social media'-age trap, and we treat people like we could be talking to a real person face-to-face. (which I might with you at a star party one day* - the above really was a joke 😂) Ady PS - *unless you're one of the observer fraternity, with your la-de-da massive light buckets... If you're one of those, it's Cheshires at dawn! 😁)
  10. A word of warning... a 3d printer isn't a tool, it's a hobby! A very, very useful and rewarding one, though.
  11. @Budgie1and thanks for the detailed explanation - I'm tempted!
  12. Great pictures! What have you done to your EQ5 to get results like this?
  13. @Len1257, I have looked back on my records and used M5 x 40mm scews. I used 'shouldered thumbscrews*' for the tightening screws that you adjust from the outside, and countersunk screws from the mirror housing back to the outer threaded nuts. * If I was doing it now, instead of the thumbscrews I'd 3d-print thumbscrew adapters for standard bolts that are normally adjusted with spanners (like Thingiverse link - although these are likely m4 size)
  14. Mistakes I have made in DSLR focusing ; - display was set to lowest brightness in camera settings (from the previous session). Yes, really 😉 -exposure wasn't set to bulb. My old Nikon wouldn't change the live view dependent on exposure, but the Canon does - and so the star in live view is as bright as the exposure time will give you. I had too short an exposure, as I was going to set that after focusing. D'oh. Hope this helps, Ady
  15. Yup, the currently active listing is https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Telescope-Nikon-100-MM-For-1200-MM-/174525240117?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292
  16. All I'd need to do is want to take an astro photo with fireworks. Then I'd never see them 😂
  17. I also have a diy astro-EQ, which I used to convert an eq-5 to goto. I bought the two programmed chips and a circuit board from Tom's website for £12.70 delivered and then made it myself. Had never done anything of that level of soldering before, but it worked first time (no-one more surprised than me 😂). The surprises keep rolling in as it is still going strong two and a half years later 👍. Highly recommended. Ady
  18. A 150pds with associated bits would be way too heavy for an AZ-Gti. I have both.

    New to sgl

I have the 1145p and have used it with an AZ goto mount (although I have moved onto bigger things now) . I think it is a cracking scope for the beginner and is only really let down by the focus controls (they work OK, but can be difficult to get *exactly* right). In the beginning, don't put too much faith in the goto - it works, but in my mind you do well to learn to navigate the major objects manually before graduating to the lazier goto option. It won't be possible to see many of the fainter deep sky objects in a scope this small, so don't be disappointed if you can't see/find a certain object - start with the bright ones and then you will learn the limit of your equipment and viewing conditions. The Android app Synscaninit is an excellent free tool to help you enter the right information when initialising your AZ goto mount. Oh, and in terms of photography you can't connect a dslr to this scope unless you do some modifications, but you can take photos through an eyepiece with your smartphone. HTH Ady
  20. And - as I understand it under the Consumer Contracts Regulations - the retailer does not have to pay for the return postage if their terms and conditions state this. (if it isn't stated, then the retailer must pay the postage). The retailer can also deduct an amount from the refund commensurate with the loss in value of the product. So if a retailer can only sell a returned item it if they discount it, then they can deduct this amount from the amount refunded. You have no legal right to buy something online, open it and then expect to return without any cost to you, unless it is faulty or not as described. Even though Amazon let you do it 😁.
  21. Exactly. Which is why my post is in response to the comment "In theory, the store loses exactly nothing"
  22. I'm not sure many people would pay full price for expensive astronomy gear that had been used by someone else...
  23. I should clarify that the subscription is only if you want further updates... for new users if you don't want updates after your first year, you don't need to pay any more - you can keep using the version you've got for no extra charge.
  24. Just to add further info (so you don't have to go look at the SGP website like I did 😉), if you aren't upgrading from a previous version then it is $149.00 up front then $59.00 / year.
