  1. I finally got my scope after much deliberation and ended up with a second hand Meade LXD75 on n EQ mount with GoTo for €300/£230 Now I need eyepieces. I did see a post somewhere with the formula for choosing them but cant find it Hopefully someone will be able to help in telling me what I should go for The specs are as follows Focal length = f/5 Clear Aperture = 150 mm Focal Length = 762mm I wear glasses so need a longer eye relief. a wide field of view would be nice. I've also ordered a Star travel 80 so that has a 10 mm,20mm and a 2x barlow which I can use as well.(I'll be going abroad i

  3. Well guys, its a case of the best laid plans of mice and men etc. I went to look at the heq5 atvthe weekend and it was in worse condition that I realised so I gave it a miss. Of course plans for an ota went askew as well. Today I picked up a bargain on one of the classified sites this side of the water. I'm now the proud owner of a Meade LDX75 on an EQ5 ( need to double check) goto mount that also came with a battery power pack. I'll need to get a proper rechargeable power pack but it was a good deal at €300/£230 Its been looked after and stored indoors so a good buy. I'll no doubt open anot
  4. I got a pair of Olympus on Amazon uk recently for under £50. Gotva lot of good reviews.
  5. Ive been in the same boat as you ad have been trying to figure out what to get the last few weeks....I have a thread further down on the Skywatcher 200 ! I was initially going to go for the Skywatcher Explorer 200 but the more I read , the more confused I got! We don't have any stores here in Ireland but do have an oniine retailer. I was able to give him a call and drop up to his house last night to look at his scopes. He had a 200 pds and a 150pds. In the meantime I read some great things on the 130 pds regards Astro photography. Anyway, after seeing them I concluded the 200mm though suited
  6. Well guys I've made my decision. Thanks to everyone for your advice. I was down with Stephen from ktech telescopes (for those in the Republic) and took a look through his 200 pds and 150 PDS. After some discussion and reading rave reviews on here, I'm going for the SWE 130 PDS on a heq5 GOTO mount. Interesting that while with him I looked at the Orion Nebula on the150 and through my Celestron Skymaster 20x80 binos. The binos were better:)
  7. Has anyone dealt with discounted digital in Hainault Rd, Hainault, Essex? They have an explorer 200 PDS for £224 which is a savage price. They have an eBay store as well "acheapstore" with a 99.8 % positive feedback.
  8. OK guys, you've convinced me. I've a chance of a heq5 goto for €650/£485 second hand. Now the dilema I've also an offer of a celestron as to master 130eq for €130/£100. Am I better off leaving the scope and putting the money into something better. I see the skywatcher 150 is a shorted FL and the 200p is a fast scope at f5. My budget it blown and my wife will divorce me when she gets home from slovakia.
  9. PS another thread I read on SGL said the EQ5 would be good for the Skywatcher Explorer 150P-DS OTA. Have opinions changed in 4 years?
  10. Why cant this be as simple as building lego...another past time of mine (ostensibly for my son ) Nebula, thanks for the links. I'll look at those later. You've a better chance of dark skies in Donegal than we have in the capital...note to self...move house! Thanks for all the feedback guys...its not easy. Another question. If I go for a heq5 mount (I've seen one that could be within range though outside of budget) What OTA would you recommend? People are recommending a short focal length which from all my other reading makes sense. (I've ordered "Make every photon count") Is there one that w
  11. Thanks for the feedback. The plan was to start with visual but I want to position myself so I could stick a camera on and get some shots occasionally. Are there any alternatives within my budget.
  12. Hi All I'm looking at my first scope. I'm in Dublin so in the middle of the city and we dont have any astronomy shops to go to, so looking at them is difficult! Anyways, I have a few ideas in mind as to what I want to do. 1. Look at the solar system 2. Some DSO 3. Be able to do some astrophotography. I have some ideas but someone might be able to steer me in a better direction. I was looking at the http://www.firstlightoptics.com/reflectors/skywatcher-explorer-200p-eq5.html From what I can see its upgradable but I don't know if I could get away with http://www.firstlightoptics.com/reflecto
