  1. I started with one of these - it's an excellent first scope that'll give you a good grounding in visual astronomy. You can upgrade it with an RA motor very easily (around £70) and do some entry level astro photography.

    You may need to firm it up a bit for imaging cos it vibrates a bit which affects pictures - most folks sling a weight under the tray or fill the legs with sand.

    Thanks for the kind comments folks and sorry I didn't see your messages till now. The legs are adjustable and they were made for me by a friend with welding kit. Unfortunately he no longer has the welder.

    The "Goto" was added from a Skywatcher AZ GOTO mount that I purchased for £190. The handsets from both scopes were interchangeable, so it left me with a tracking AZ mount and handset to offset the expense.

    I prefer right angle finders and the one displayed is an Orion 9x50 Correct image version. With the "goto" though it hardly gets used. The shroud was ordered through Harrisons.

    On a clear night the views of M42 in a 12mm hyperion are awesome at our dark site :)
