  1. Looking good so far for clear skies tonight. Hope I don't get disappointed again when darkness falls! Fingers crossed for some meteor sightings, and a little observing too! :)

How many meteors did you see in total (11 and 12 August).

I saw max 30 in really dark skies. Weird, Everyone in Britain seems to be seeing 50-60 but here I can only see 15 a night.

That's everyone in Britain then except me! Lol! ;)

I'm in the states with urban skies (Bortle 5) and managed to see 20 over a period of two hours. I was in and out of the house a lot and probably missed some. Several were really bright with long trails!

  2. Woo hoo! Forecast is for clear skies tonight. Fingers crossed! I'm getting excited already! Hehe! ;)

      Knighty2112

Thanks Guys. Was nice to have some observing time again. Only downside was the glare of the moon, but hey I'll take what I can when the chance permits! :)

  3. Weather forcast is for clear this evening, so fingers crossed the Vesta hunt can begin! :)

  5. Even though the skies were cruddy, I just managed to bag the blue snowball planetary nebula! Happy bunny! :)

Hi Chris. I used my ST120 frac on my Goto mount. When I get a chance next I'm going to see if I can see I with the 4 SE as well. :)

  6. Windy, and not far off a full moon, but got a good view of Uranus just north of the moon through my 120mm ‘frac and 5mm EP. Nice to see a planet again! :)

A little planetary imaging now and again is all.

    4. orion25

      orion25

I spent the better half of 2018 imaging Mars (and its dust storms). I'm warming up to my ASI224MC as I have been using the very capable Orion 5MP Solar System camera for planetary work. I'm gearing up for a better apparition in 2020, too!

  7. Got a very nice (but brief due to cloud) view through my Maxvision 68 20mm EP in my new Skywatcher Explorer 200P-DS reflector of the moon last night. Hoping for good things from this scope! Fingers crossed! :)

fantastic Gus ,I'm glad you like it, I think toget the most outa the sky a newt is a must, ive had quite a few over the years, my biggist was 24inch back in the 80s, but fantastic to view through it was a pain to transport, I retired it in the late 80s because of needing re silvering and I couldn't sell a kidney, ive still got the mirror and secondry and otheir bits in the loft. I look forward to hearing when you have a night of clear with good seeing.  charl.

    3. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112

Thanks Charl. I'm hoping there might be a little time tonight after sunset to view Venus, Mars and the moon with the new scope before those clouds supposedly pile back in. Nice and sunny here today in Hull, so going to have a look at the sun after my cup of tea. :)

    4. xtreemchaos

      xtreemchaos

the suns forsaken me here, thick cloud and rain, but the rigs all powered up just in case I get a clear patch. clear skys mate.  charl.

nice one mate, i had the skytree 1 a few years ago ,wish i never sold it, thay dont hafe take some weight i used to have a 150mm frac on one end and the 200p on the other, i sold it because i need the money to buy a Heq5 or i would of still had it. charl.

    3. Galactic Wanderer

      Galactic Wanderer

As Chaos said, try not to think about it, then when Friday arrives you'll be pleasantly surprised. But I think this is quite hard to keep off your mind...:happy11:

    4. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112

Yeah, was looking forward to having a first light with them tonight as the forcast is to be clear until around midnight, but Friday is not too long to wait. I'm busy with work on the next three days so wouldn't be able to use it fully intil Friday anyway. :)

  11. Nice Sunny day, with clear skies, so doing a little WL solar (small AR group on the sun), and checking Venus out too in the daylight with my C8 SCT on my goto mount! :)

    2. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112

BTW: the magnification with the 32mm EP in my C8 SCT is 63x.

    3. Red Dwarfer

      Red Dwarfer

Okay on the 63x - I tried earlier this afternoon but could not detect anything in an ST80 / ES8.8/82 that gave around 45x mag - the filter was bought for the ED80 but I use it on the ST80 as it is more compact , especially when used from indoors ... maybe a bigger filter for the ST120 might yield better results with the extra aperture ?

    4. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112

In theory the larger the aperture the more the detail seen, although I did get better results from my Omni 120mm ‘frac with my Lunt wedge fitted than the larger aperture on my C8 SCT that had a normal kind of solar filter (an Explore Scientific sun catcher filter for C8) over the front end of it.

  12. Hopefully looking good for a few hours cloud free tonight. A quick bite to eat and I'll be straight out! ?

hope you got some nice views Gus, the seeing and cloud here was terrible, I tried for a hour and pact in, the seeing isn't any better thismorrning, sols just a fazing mess mate, I have a nice prom image, ill post as soon as ive finished processing.  clear skys, charl.

    4. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112

Thanks Charl. Was testing out the new Goto mount, and worked a treat. Saw a couple of M's I'd never seen before. Wish I'd took notes 'cos I can't rember the numbers, but a new Galaxy see, plus a new glob and some open clusters too. :)

  13. Unexpected bit of clear skies, not the best so been hunting some doubles on the AVX Mount with my Omni 120mm ‘frac. Happy days! :)

Yes, got a few shots off the other night. Need to process them and I’ll post it up.

  14. Just had new led streetlights installed on my back and front ways. Looks much darker out there, although the proof of the pudding will come when I get clear skies, but fingers crossed! :)

As long as they don't shine upwards, you should be fine. The ones on our street are kind of dim actually unless you stare into them from below.

    3. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112

From what I can see they shine directly down. Get a better idea tonight as forcast to be clear (fingers crossed), so should get a better idea when dark skies show. :)

Think the cold weather isn’t helping either, nor the clouds, or the damp etc, but binos are always still handy for any quick outside nocturnal excursions still. :)

You will Gus, you will!  I've not exactly lost mine, but the lousy skies are getting me down, and Christmas will be downtime what with everything else going on.  So Yes - roll on early January!

      Doug.

  16. My ZWO ADC arrived today, so managed to test it out on Venus earlier on. Worked great from what I could see. Need to try it out on Jupiter and Mars for some more tests with it, but so far looking good! :)

Nice one. I'd never heard of these until recently. Were you using it visually or for imaging? Sounds like there's some improvement from them but not a miracle cure.

    3. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112

So far just visually. Didn’t have time really to try any imaging with it. I do plan to image Mars and Jupiter with it a soon a we get a break in the persistent cloud cover.

    4. Littleguy80

      Littleguy80

Cool. I’ll keep an eye out your reports on the ADC and your images too, of course :)

The cloud is terrible and it’s put me in a vicious circle. I buy new equipment, weather gets cloudy, I’m bored, I buy new equipment.... ;)

Hi Charl. Had a very brief view of M13 last night. Sky conditions weren’t great, so M13 wasn’t showing its best. Forcast for tonight looks much better hopefully. From what I saw on the solar sunspots earlier on I know the views will be great. Already can see nice and sharp stars in the EP when looking around. 😀

    3. xtreemchaos

      xtreemchaos

thats good mate, i was impressed with my mates, i might get the ED myself at some point once it picks up after the plague 😀

its chucking it down here but think ive better weather tomorrow, wishing you clear . charl.

  18. New (to me) Heq5 Pro goto mount got first light out tonight. The 2 star alignment proved to work very well. Looking forward to good views with this mount! 😀

    1. xtreemchaos

      xtreemchaos

nice one mate, there great mounts, i went for one because there lighter than the EQ6 but thay can handle the wieght, mines carryed the 102 and ed 80 + dew heaters cameras and got over 2min frames with no bother the only down is no slowmo controls its all got to be done with handset. ive never used the goto yet im worried its going to crash against the window in my obsyroom 😀. goodluck mate. charl.

    2. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112

Thanks Charl. Looking to get the mount fitted with wifi so I can hopefully use Skysafari to control it. Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

      xtreemchaos

i use sometimes the laptop and eqmod cable when autoguiding i can get longer captures i think the longist ive had with guiding is around 4min but others have had longer its just im not into fine tuning PHD Ive a short attention span 😀.

  19. Yeah! Managed to bag Vesta tonight. Was easier than I thought to spot with the surrounding stars and was the brightest in the EP too, so well chuffed! :):):)

    3. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112

Thanks Reggie. Was hoping that I may just catch it with the camera, and in the end it popped out quite easily once I zoomed out for a wider field of view with the camera and a shorter exposure time of 6 seconds. :)

  20. Managed to bag Venus just before I went behind houses, and Mercury too for the first time for ages. Pushed the mag a little, but could see the phase of Mercury very easily. Had a quick peek at Mars too! :)

    1. Knighty2112

      Knighty2112
