Our next meeting is Saturday June 10th at 7pm. when the speaker will be Dr Tony Cook who never fails to surprise and entertain his audiences: ' 5 mad things to do this summer!'

Newtown Astronomy Society's next meeting is on November 12th 2016 at 7 pm when Mr Les Fry will be giving a talk
'If I Can Do that - Astronomers can make anything out of chewing gum and a piece of string'. the talk is how a boy's love of the night sky became a lifelong passion. A talk that takes you from '0' level Astronomy in Dorset to being instrumental in attaining International Dark Sky Status for the Elan Valley Estate in Mid Wales. Newtown Astronomy Society's next meeting is on October 8th 7pm when Dr Pauline Norris will be giving a talk
'The Ancient Egyptians and their Astronomy' Dr Norris has a particular interest in how the ancient Egyptians used astronomy in their belief system and what the saw in the sky - topics technically known in reverse order as 'Skyscapes' and the relatively new discipline of cultural astronomy. Newtown Astronomy Society Newtown Powys. September 10th 2016 'Cook's Tour of the Moon' by Dr Tony Cook. Dr Cook 's talk will describe the history of one of NASA's most successful lunar missions. With a great deal of experience including working on ground based cartographical software for a number of planetary and lunar missions in Germany and the USA. He was involved in a proposal for an early camera design for NASA LRO mission, He is an Assistant Director of the lunar section of the British Astronomical Association and has an asteroid named after him. Presently he is a lecturer in Physics at Aberystwyth University. The meeting is in the Newtown Scout Hut, Park Lane, Newtown 7pm

"You pays your Money and takes your choice, Pt 2" Newtown Astronomy Society delivers equipment advise from Pete Addams. Pete will return to continue his essential guide, taking you through the differences in equipment, you may or may-not need, when observing or photographing the night sky. There will also be plenty of slides to show the results of such equipment. Now the longer nights are with us and Christmas is approaching, this is an ideal time to take some of this knowledge on board, before spending your hard earned cash on “kit” you might not need. Along with the usual “What’s on?” Discussions, coffee and biscuits, this should be a great mix for an entertaining and useful night out, and with people who all have similar interests. Saturday 14th November, 7.00pm at Pen Dinas. Turn in for Theatre Hafren, take the 1st right, and it’s the 1st bungalow on the left or SY16 4HX for your Sat Nav. "Black Holes: their mysteries explained!" This month, Newtown Astronomy Society, welcomes back “Associate Lecturer for the Open University”, Sue Walker BA, MSc Sue says, "In this talk I will explain what black holes are, how they are formed, their mysterious properties, and how we know that they really exist! I will aim to cover both the basics, for those who are new to the subject, and also in places delve a little deeper for those who want the challenge! So something to please all, I hope!" Along with the usual “What’s on?” Discussions, coffee and biscuits, this should be a great mix for an entertaining and enlightening night out, and with people who all have similar interests.
